And the understated guitar playing from time to time is gorgeous and appropriate. Wow!!! And did I mention RT's voice? It has never been in better form or sounded better!

He's rarely gone more than 2 or 3 years between albums his entire career. Although I could listen to his back catalog forever, I hope something new is on the horizon.

Richard and the band played this at Gawsworth Hall in Macclesfield a few nights ago. He and they were magnificent. Shame about the seats though, and the bloody pillar that obscured my view. Grr. My daughter, at 23, was one of the youngest in the audience. It was almost all oldies like me, which is sad, because Richard Thompson is better than all the crap that the youngsters listen to (I was going to say 99% of it, but I don't believe that). He still rocks and his voice seems to have improved markedly. Has he been taking singing lessons? I'm serious. If you can, get along to see him this summer. He can't go on forever, sadly.

Pwecko going to see the great man in November at Bexhill - cannot wait!!! Saw him solo acoustic last year in Brighton and he was magnificent, but I missed his unique electric guitar style. RT has the ability to move an audience through several layers of emotion seamlessly - one minute you are laughing at one of his stories the next you find yourself welling up as he sings Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes. I think he pulls it off because he is genuine. Highlights of the night were Gethsemene and Down Where the Drunkards Roll (for me). Sorry to ramble on but you know how it is!!

honeychurchgipsy6 I do know how it is. I find myself waxing lyrical about Richard Thompson to people who aren't familiar with him and realising that I must sound like a star-struck teenager. The first time I saw him was at a solo gig at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in the late 80s or early 90s. I thought he was going to be with a band, so I was disappointed when I just saw his guitars on the stage. I wasn't disappointed when he started playing though. I must admit, it took me a long time to become a big fan of RT. His voice takes some getting used to. But after a while, you wouldn't want him any other way, so to speak.

Pwecko - I envy you having been a fan for so long. My brother introduced me to him about 12 years ago when he played me Vincent Black Lightning in his old van. He made me listen to the words and I was overwhelmed by it: for a long time I couldn't listen to it without crying - lol!!! My friend can't understand why I like him. I found it took me ages to get my head around his electric guitar solos but now I'd rather listen to him than anyone else.

In 2019, Rt promoted a tour of South Africa with a young entrepreneur Matt Collins and his business venture Tourica Tours. (please Google it) This was to be an unbelievable chance to see South Africa with RT including 5 intimate performances. The cost was approx. 6k per person, not including flights, and I bought 2 tickets for my parents, lifelong fans who had seen him perform dozens of times over 30+ years, as a retirement gift. I saved for 3 years to do this. Covid, unfortunately post-poned the trip until 2022 when it was renewed to proceed. Then, a few weeks before the trip was set to go, the unimaginable happened, Matt Collins died of a sudden heart attack leaving his family, wife, and kids devastated. His father, a business partner with years of experience as a travel agent, assured RT and over 30+ fans/customers the trip was all paid for and garuanteed. Literally 2 days before the tour would begin, RT cancelled. No video apology from this millionaire musician but instead a pathetic "management" style excuse quoting him saying he had only cancelled 5 shows in his 55 year career, literally doubling that number with this selfish, egotistical, and disrespectful act. Along with Matt Collins father, my parents were left weeping, angry, and dismayed. How can this man, who has written and recorded such beautiful songs, be so ungrateful to his fans? He even claims to be a spiritual man, proselytizing multiple beliefs through out his career, all obviously a lie. His songs are nothing more than a deceptive tool for profit, his convictions are non but selfish. I've since read articles interviewing his first wife and Linda Ronstadt that he is a rather questionable narcissist. Frankly, it explains his obscurity in modern music history. To you RT... Your spirit will have to seek forgiveness from Matt, his family AND his father, and all the fans who were betrayed by you one day. I doubt this will ever reach you as celebrity is the sickness of this country but for those of you who have read this... This is not a hero who cares.
