He was in denial, not accepting that he is almost blind and hated the word "blind" - so he is faking that he can see. On this video his vision is blocked by huge pitch black circles in the middle - the size of your palm. He only sees extremely blurry shapes on the side of his eyes. Most of the time he is imagining things by sound, such as people. When he lost his vision completely a couple years later, he wasn't even aware of it for about 1 year, as he was still imagining what he thought was there. Watch the documentary "Dealt".

For a while he didn't talk about being blind and didn't want to be introduced as being blind. He said that his blindness was irrelevant because it's never prevented him from doing anything he's wanted to do. You're right about him acting like he could see. I saw an interview where he talked about how he's been in situations where if people knew he was blind, they would know it was him. One of those times was when a card counter was being filmed playing poker for a TV show. From what I gathered, the card counter was bragging about how he was going to win. So the casino decided to bring Richard in to deal and didn't tell anybody. He said that he had to act like he could see so he wouldn't tip anyone off. They filmed for 2 hours and Richard didn't deal the card counter a single winning hand.

I remember hearing at one point Richard could read a card by feeling the ink on it's face. He's estimated to have practiced each particular card skill over 60 million times over his lifetime. Yeah, he's good.
@PaulsPubAndBrew2 жыл бұрын
That's a common misconception. He has superhuman touch. But he can't feel what a card is by touching the face. Nor can he sense the weight of the card based on the ink on it. When he opens a new pack of cards he rubs the edges of the deck in a certain way that make microscopic impressions across the deck. Because the deck is in new deck order at the time he did this he can feel the edges of the cards later to know what cards are what. He can't do this for all 52 cards. He might know the kings or the aces, ETC.
@khosen65922 жыл бұрын
@@PaulsPubAndBrew he can’t see so how can he tell which cards are aces or faces?
@PaulsPubAndBrew2 жыл бұрын
@@khosen6592 I explained that in my comment. He opens the deck which is in a new deck order, and he rubs the side of the deck very carefully to make invisible markings on the sides of the cards that he can feel with his crazy touching ability. Then when the cards are shuffled he can feel the sides of the cards to have an idea what they are. He doesn't do it for all 52 cards, just the cards he wants to find later for his show.
@khosen65922 жыл бұрын

It's more like this. It's easier for him since he's blind than it would be for you. When you're blind, your brain will use the resources normally used for sight for something else. If you can do perfect shuffles consistently, it is easy to shuffle the queens into the right order. It is basic math. Let's say you have 4 queens on top and have five players. You just shuffle 5 times perfectly, and the queens will be at the 1st, 6th, 11th, and 16th position. - @flewkisdead
@taylorhaws64026 жыл бұрын
that's called "faro stacking"
@MrFunkee5 жыл бұрын
Four shuffles for a 5 player game rather. If you watch it carefully, the initial cut from the spectator throws me off completely. It appears that he first placed the Queens on top. Then she cut the deck. Then he shuffled twice, and asked a spectator for the number of players. Two shuffles would have put them at a 3 player stack. It would be safe to assume the person would say 2 or more. But he's already gone too far if they said just 2 players because the deck is stacked for 3. Risky! He then did two more shuffles to make it a 5 player game. Then a false strip cut to finish it off. But where were the Queens to start with?
