The storm was too far away for Richard to hear the thunder; what he got treated to was a side view of the storm as it moved, the lightning flashing within. The Anvil usually points the direction the storm is going, a bit like a finger pointing the way. Lightning that is too distant to be heard is called 'heat lightning' due to it being associated with warm weather.

Wow! Amazing storms you are experiencing there. I don't think I've ever seen such an electrical storm without thunder. Sitting here watching your video full screen reminded me of my Greenpoint, Brooklyn apartment which I left 5 years ago. It was in LaGuardia's flight path, and the old Polish neighborhood had been transformed into a hipster haven. The inconsideration of my neighbors used to irritate me much. Although I miss the diversity of culture and people, I'm happy to now be in the country. I still get to the city every 6 weeks or so. :)

Connor Clark Due to the storm having a high cloud base, this can make it visible over longer distances. What a great storm though. I live on the Lincolnshire fens, this is where the storms come to die, leaving only cirrus cloud. Due to the cold North sea being not too far, and the land being so flat. There is nothing to stop the cool easterly winds killing off thunderstorm development.

Nice vid. I'm collecting (noting rather than stealing) footage of this event (which was countrywide) as I did a study on it. It wasn't climate change, but rather just top-notch perfect conditions for a severe storm environment, which are rarely seen in any one location in the UK. The storm was in a back-building environment which meant its apparent movement is backwards to the flow of the wind (hence why it looked like it was coming from the north in a southeasterly flow). There were a few funnel clouds/tornado reports from this particular cell. You captured a rare show!

Safe to say, these types of storms are pretty peculiar for London. The lovely anvil shape and super cell formation is something typical for May-June in places like Oklahoma, where there are Tornados.
