@@richardholdener1727 I liked the low compression. Same everything with a Q-jet. Truck motor. 454's need a roller cam because of the funky oiling or drilling into the oil gallery with a redirection. Rollers are fine. I like NV4500's behind mild Chevy's in a truck platform. MSD with on the fly timing control and a A/F gauge, all is good. Simple, clean and last forever. Power is nice but sometimes people want a truck with some pop but will last. Low compression big block with 500tq at 2500 isn't bad. I say keep it simple.

That is an old-style tunnel ram. A Fabricated tunnel ram will make even more power and torque than the old-style tunnel ram. It does it due to a more direct shot into the intake ports. The direct shot also allows you to tune with your LAMBDA. That allows you to optimize each cylinder with proper jetting. GREAT VIDEO!!! I built a 11:5:1 496 single plane with a 1050 dominator and 2.125" id headers that made 714hp. I'd love to see what the tunnell ram would do on that.

I could be wrong, but 1-point of compression ratio is probably equal to about 25-30hp or so, yeah???....therefore, I highly doubt it would bring the power up to 700hp with the single carb intakes.....the tunnel ram, yes...but the single plane intakes, no.

I've always wondered how the old school BBC would do with a like modern LS style long runner EFI intake manifold . Because most aftermarket intakes like FAST make good power down low and carry it pretty well uptop as well . Something like the cross ram from edelbrock would be make good power on the big block chevy with having equal length runners and lower hood clearance than a tunnel ram .
@brettanderson6743
@brettanderson6743 4 жыл бұрын
Just an opinion. Probably won't make as much difference as you think. The old BBC heads don't flow particularly well whereas the LS heads flow quite well. I think good aftermarket heads with LS style intake and injection would definitely make some good power down low. Highish comp would also be needed to be effective.

back in the early 90's I had an 1976 Hondo SK Drag Boat. with a 427 L88 Sporting an Edelbrock Tunnel ram, a set of highly modified 625 CFM Carter AFB's and a set of velocity stacks. sold the boat to a guy that just wanted it for the motor for a corvette he was restoring. Turns out those L88s was pretty rare. all these years latter I regret selling the engine more than the boat... I had to rebuild the V-drive and water pump and repack all the shaft seals every spring. it also did not like MSD spark boxes for some reason, I must have gone threw a half dozen MSD boxes before I found an old Mallory Hi-Fire. after I put the Hi-Fire on I never had to touch it again. that engine was a screamer. It smoked every boat that I ever raced with it. it would launch like it was fired out of a gun, the rpms would keep climbing as long as you kept your foot in it. it saw 7000 rpm a few times before backed out of it. it was deafening how loud it was a 7k. but it was more than that. you could feel the thump of every piston as soon as that engine lit off. I have never felt any quite like it before or since. I currently run a 1971 Camaro SS 396, it is very fast, but its not the same as that L88. hmm... maybe I should build an "L88" with a ram for my Camaro.

@@richardholdener1727 yea, I wish I knew that back then. when I bought it I was told the engine came from a corvette race car, it was in pretty rough shape. I only bought it cause I though it had bow tie aluminum heads. one of the aluminum heads had dropped a valve seat, and damaged one of the pistons, but had not hurt the head to bad. I had the heads gone threw they were a hot mess. needed all new exhaust valve seats and all the guide needed to be done, the rest of it was in good shape. I had the engine freshened up at the local machine shop. had it boarded .030 to clean it up. and a new set of TRW 12.5:1 pistons. the pistons themselves were weird, this is the only factory engine I ever seen that had bushed wrist pins and locks. anyway the machine shop told me it was an L88 and that those early factory aluminum heads had a tendency to drop the valve seats on the exhaust side. the old guy working there had done a couple of L89 396 heads a few years back with the same problem. Now, 30+ yeas latter and I have seen those L88 cars go across the block at Barret-Jackson or Mecum for some stupid amounts of money and I kick myself for selling it...Personally I hope it ended up back in that old corvette racecar. something that rare deserves a proper home, and I count my self lucky to have actually experienced one at 7000 RPM.

Your cam chose is an excellent cam. Any cam in a natural exasperated engine that puts the peak torque in at 43-4500 rpm's and peak horsepower in the 63-6500 rpm's is giving the best of both worlds. Lower rpm cams will product more torque while giving up HP. Higher rpm cams make less torque, but more HP. Average out torque and HP. Add the resulting numbers together and the combo that gives you the highest number is the best combo.

Remember in a boat things are different, you only have 1.gear. So you got to have torque in low rpm to get the boat out of the vater to plan. If you dont have the torq you need, you got to have a smaler propell, and you lose top speed. Så a verry torque engine with a flat torque kurv is important.

Richard, have you tested a holley high ram against a Weiand HI-Ram? Looking at this tunnel ram it's pretty old school with the inverted D shape ports and bent runners. A couple Windsor guys have gotten as much as 30 horse power in back to back testing of both intakes. Granted it was on a serious street machine but gaining 2 tenths over the best run on something that already runs 11s makes me wonder how much better is really is.

I am pleasuring myself, watching this video. BOATS RULE. Now if you would take the 496 and bump the compression up to be able to run premium pump fuel with the tunnel ram. Is the sweet spot 10.5:1 ,11:1, 11.5:1 or higher to get the most top end? Then, like you mentioned, do a comparison to see the difference with 540. The same setup. I'm a boat guy. To build a 496 or 540 is about the same money. But the question is; is it really worth it in the numbers? I've seen a lot of less than 500ci motors go really fast. Bigger is always better is not always true. On my shelf I have a Banks twin turbo setup, and a 671 Cragar blower. The turbo setup has the Rayjay's that came with the original setup. They are small so watching you has got me to think maybe upgrade/upsize the turbos with a 496 would be a good boat motor for my hydro. This video got me fired up. Thanks, man.
