HA! I followed your instructions and was able to add a second router way out in my shop (burried 100 feet of LAN cable). So the work-from-home network is now separate from the "public" shop network. These are both connected to my Comcast modem/router. To my amazement it worked the first time. Thank you for the no nonsense tutorial.

I've been researching VLANs for a few days now, coming to the conclusion I needed to buy a switch and update my routers. In under 30 minutes I had this setup working with an old crappy dlink router. Thanks for this I've been trying to figure out how to separate my home network from my lab and this is absolutely perfect. The one thing I did have to do is delete the DHCP scope information on the server and re-add it. I also had to turn DHCP off on the secondary router. Really pleased with this thanks again

I have two questions: From one of the subnetworks (home), how can I set up NAT to open specific ports ? I've found that nothing works even if I setup the NAT in the correspondent network's router. The other question is... Now that I have separated networks 192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x, how can I share a folder from a computer in the first network, to be available from the second network ? (and also enable a way to view the computer with rdp from the other network)... Is there a way to create a route between networks to make that 'restricted' communication ? Thanks again

So i watched your video, i was looking for help connecting a tp link ER605 router (no wifi on this router) and one Orbi RBR10 for wifi using one ISP…the er605 and the orbi ip addresses are different so it was pretty much plug and play…thanks to the way you explained everything i was able to get my system up and running but i have a question: should i keep the Orbi the way it is now a second router or change it to AP mode or it doesn’t really matters? There's an old saying,"If it's not broken don't fix it." But if you want to experiment there should be a way to save a configuration file (backup) for either of the routers so you can bring it back (restore) the router to the current working settings easily. Richard...EXCELLENT Video... I have an "in-Law" unit on my property and had just put an Access Point in the unit (connected via cable and about 150 feet away). I thought I had my own network pretty much isolated but quickly found out that those in the in-law unit could still access my printer and probably other information on my personal machines...not desired. Setting these up as two isolated networks will fix that!! Question 1: you stated to prevent 2.4 GHz interference, you should use only Channel 1, 6, or 11, but later in your video you actually improved your wireless speed by changing to Channel 8. Did that mean you had interference on 1, 6, or 11 from one of your "neighbors"? Question 2... With your three router configuration, do you still need to have the wireless radios enabled on the Main Router #1 Common Network if your two Private Network Routers are HARDWIRE connected and you can access those wirelessly ? The main router (connected to the modem) can see both the other routers and if the other routers are set up to allow remote management then you can manage those routers if you are logged into the main router. Just a question on the DCHP, leaving just the main router to provide IP's to both networks. With just the DCHP active on the main network, it will provide IP's for the 2 side networks, even though they are on separate networks? Also, just wondering about the IP range for each network, being different networks, each can provide the full 256-2 IP's from 1 to 255, or should each be segmented for 1/3 of the IP's each??

Great question. The DHCP being active on the main network is really not that important unless you are connecting clients to it. In the video when you reset the secondary and tertiary routers (client routers to the main) you will be enabling DHCP on them by default and when you set the internal LAN IP address on each router that will configure the LAN DHCP on the client router to handle IP address requests on that private network. The DHCP server on the primary main router can only and will only hand out IP addresses on the (in my case) 192.168.0.XXX network. The WAN ports on the other two routers will be manually configured (hard coded) with a permanent IP address that will not change. So you shouldn't have to worry about DHCP on any of the routers. Make sure to reset all the routers to factory defaults and then follow my video exactly it will work for you. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Richard I’m not sure you still monitor this but I’ll ask… with your 3 routers and modem you are connecting 2 routers to the Linksys router, why not connect all 3 routers to your modem? Reason I ask is that I have Centurylink modem/ router and if I connected 2 routers to them would be the same if connected properly, correct? Hi Richard,down under here,My primary Modem-Router is a Netgear D7000. I would like to use a 2nd Modem-Router (Netgear AC 750) in Granny Flat about 50 metres down the back yard. Running an Ethernet Cable would be inconvenient. Could I use WiFi between the 2 Routers instead of hard wire?

You may be able to do it with powerline adapters kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZTEeWppqa9_fLM but the distance and the fact that it is a separate build from yours make it somewhat unlikely that this solution would work. Another option is this WIFI transmitter at Amazon: amzn.to/2LPRgez but it is $50 and you may need two of them. The only other option would be running outdoor network cable out to the building which you can bury with a flat spade (does not need to be very deep just as long as it is not exposed and susceptible to the lawn mower) I know it's a bit of work but it will give you the best result. As long as the electrical cable is on the same meter the powerline adapter will work. My setup is main modem/router in the main house, my office is in granny flat about 15 metres away from the main router. I use Tenda PH3 AV1000 powerline adapter. My second router TP Link Archer VR1600v in the granny flat, main router Sagemcom. I get 1Gbps over ethernet using Cat6 cable on my laptop and PC. I get 433Mbps max. over WiFi at 5Ghz. I can then further extend this using a 3in1 AC1200 Universal extender/repeater/access point. TendaPH3 can extend up to 200m coverage.

You can connect two routers to one modem and have two networks (Primary router being one network and the Secondary router being the second network). But with only two routers you will not have a private network on the primary router as the secondary router network will be able to see anything hosted in the primary network. With three routers you will get TWO private networks that can share anything that's hosted on the primary router network. You could set the configuration I show in this video and with just two routers and get one private network with one shared network. Hi Richard, can you advise PLS (or if you have a video about it already), how can I link two networks together, where both of them has separate ISP provider and they see each other wirelessly only? Can these two Networks extend their range, like a doorbell hanging on Network1 talks to SmartSwitch hanging on Network 2 (because wifi door bell is too far from network 2) They can be on same network - DHCP range can be set differently and clients enabled by MAC address filter - so everybody would use his same Internet, but our WiFi range would be extended....) Wifi load balancing comes not in picture here, as the two ISP connection is far from each other... Thanks

There are routers that can be connected to two separate Internet Service Providers and pipe both those feeds into one network. Here's and example at Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3U9difK They can be programmed to load balance between the two providers. The plus here is that both ISP's will be feeding data into one network. After you have that working you can set both routers to be on the same network and all should work (very simplified explanation here). I suspect that the problem you are trying to solve would not require you to do all of this. If all you need is your WIFI range extended this can be taken care of by a WIFI range extender like this one at Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3PS88SR or (Refurb): amzn.to/3U9jswK I will be doing a video on WIFI range extenders and how to deploy them in the future. Richard, I followed your detailed directions and it worked like a charm (I have a main router and a connected second router). I do have a big question though. let's say I want to access the admin page of the second router from the main network. I realize that I could simply connect to it via it's wifi, but would like to be able to do it the wired route. I can access any devices' admin page that is part of the second router's network via port forwarding; however, I don't know how to do the same for the second router's admin page. both my routers are netgear. is there some port used by the routers that are used for admin page related items?

Since you would be accessing the secondary routers through the WAN port you would have to tell the secondary routers to allow access to the admin page from the Internet (a feature that for obvious reasons is usually blocked but usually can be allowed by changing a setting in the config page) once that block is allowed you should be able to connect to the admin page on those routers from a (remote IP address) which would be the IP address you assigned to the wan port. I do not have access to my landlord's router so I have a wifi extender, My laptop does not have an ethernet cable, so I connected to my own router (Dlink) using wifi. I am however unable to browse to the rip address of the 2nd (Dlink) router to do the configurations as I get an error page. What else can I do?

At 44:30 you changed the WAN Connection type from Dynamic to static IP. I have two Netgear NightHawks and I don't see any way to select the WAN IP addresses to static using the Netgear provided firmware. Any idea how to do this with the Netgear provided router firmware ? I've got them working with one of them in AP mode but would prefer the (I assume) additional security.

Hi Lloyd, I purchased a new Asus RT-AC66U and I am daisy changing it off of an Sagecom Fast5260CV. I was going to follow the configs in your video but the Asus is already using a different set of IP.s Its LAN IP is 192.168.50.1 and is assigning IP's in that range up to 192.168.50.254. The main router uses IP's in the range of 192.168.1.1 up to .254. Both routers are set to DHCP but I am assuming with the different addresses being used I will be OK. My Main router is from the cable company and they won't let me change much of anything but the basics.

Very good tutorial. However, I am confused about network 1. Both network 2, and 3 can access Network 1. So networks can jump to another network. Can you clarify that aspect. eg. printer on network 2 can be accessed from network 1? etc.

The routers both have a network address on the common network via the outside WAN port therefore they have access (can route) to that network. Hi Richard, Great video as others. Thank you indeed for putting them together. Could you please share your advice on the following setup. ISP provides a two in one modem-router(MR). Obviously MR router is not sufficient and it is often the case more powerful router needs connecting. When adding an extra router i.e NETGEAR R7000 how do you go about DHCP on MR please. Do you leave it enabled and just disable WiFi on MR or you would advise DHCP on MR is disabled please. If you had a video on this please link it in your reply. Best, Senad

DHCP on the main router is not a big issue you can leave it on and hard code assign IP's to the other two routers outside the DHCP range of the MR DHCP server (usually there is a range of IP's not used by the DHCP server). The WIFI should be disabled on the MR as you are not going to use it, as well it would just add noise to your WIFI environment (use up another channel and possibly cause interference with the other two routers) if you left it on. Hey Richard. Any idea if there's any way to link a TP-Link wifi router to an Airport Extreme (or any other airport router after all) via WIFI? Usually, the function is called WDS. But Apple being Apple, doesn't seem to support that. Or at least not in the usual way. I know you can do it with another Airport Extreme, and you can connect and AirPort Extreme to another non-Apple router via a UTP cable. But that's not ideal, since I don't have a cable that long, and also, I don't have another Apple Extreme. So, is there any way I can make these two talk to each other via WiFi?

I want to create a private network so that I can fix/test old computers, some of which could easily contain a virus. I want to create a network so that I can connect these computers to the internet without any risk to my main/home network, as you say in your video a Business network. I kindly need some clarity as you state that the Private netowork routers 1/2 (circled in red) CAN TALK to the Main router (circled in green). When you say "talk", does that mean that if a virus were to infect my "Private network 1/business network", then it WOULD or WOULD NOT affect my main/home router/network? Thanks in advance!

There is a way of accomplishing that goal using VLAN's and I may make a video explaining how to do that. Check your router documentation to see if it has the feature and how to configure it. The third party firmware DD-WRT has the capability if your router is compatible. Here is a router with VLAN capability built in from the factory Amazon(paid):amzn.to/3Tgzwd4 but I can not say if it will do what you wish with VLAN's. Do your own research on this I will too. From the smart switch I'll have the second router and also various wired connections (TVs, computers, etc). Smart switch does have VLAN support so I suppose the port going to the second router could be set up that way. I'll have to look more into it. Do all your other settings still apply to the second router in this set up?

Hi Richard, I’ve added an AP through a powering extender upstairs.The first router is my ISP modem/router and it uses a 10.0.0.1. The second routers IP is a 192.168.0.1. I disabled the second routers DHCP and changed its 192.168.0.1 IP to 10.0.0.2. It works fine I have 2 diff SSIDs and the coverage is great,reliable. Am I using the correct IP as 10.0.0.2? I watch all your router videos and trial and error helps me understand them even more. Can you please let me know anything I’m doing wrong. I feel like I’m using the incorrect IP on the second router.

Yes, DHCP is enabled on all three routers. It is required to be in each network as they are all separate networks. Just a thought, instead of connecting router#3 to the main modem/router, can it be connected to the second router via ethernet and have the same setup? Or make the router#2 as access point, then hook up router#3 to router #2 and setup router #3 as separate network. The goal is to use the router #3 for the guests, as my access point (router#2) would not let me create guest network with internet access. Thanks. By the way I setup my second router as per your other video. Router #2 DHCP is disabled.

In answer to my question, I just setup my router#3, connect to lan port of router#2 to wan port of router#3. Setup and configuration as per this video. Router #3 IP address is 192.168.1.1 Main router#1 is 192.168.0.1 Router #2 is 192.168.0.12 I did not touch the DHCP of router #3, router#2 DHCP is disabled. This setup works. In this setup I have 1 different networks as router#2 is setup as access point or extension of router#1.

Question. Why change each of the routers’ LAN IP’s (2nd and 3rd) do 192.168.1 and 192.168.2? Is this what makes them private? What would change if they were kept on the primary 192.168.0 network ip and just given their different device #’s either static or through dhcp reservation? Would they no longer be private or what exactly are the reasons for changing to the 1 and 2 vs keeping them all on the primary network?

The IP address difference is what makes each network private. There is a network address (ID) 192.168.X and the node addresses 192.168.2.X this is determined by the subnet 255.255.255.0 there are many networking tutorials on how all this works on the net. Yes it is possible to log into either secondary router from the primary. You would have to enable outside access to the router as if you would be granting internet access to it's configuration. I have a problem with this exact setup. Both the tplink routers .001 and .002 can ping every computer hosted on the linksys default gateway .000 making the linksys router network not private.. All of the computers on the common network can be seen by the computers on network 1 and network 2.

Did you physically connect them exactly like I show on the video? That's the only reason I can see for this not working. I have a four router 3 network set up in my home and none of the private networks can see each other. I have an Netgear R7000P (primary), TP-Link Archer C9, Dlink 868L and a TP-Link WR841N as the private separate networks. They work exactly like I show in the video. Thanks for your help - I was able to set up two routers on separate networks. I couldn't adjust the DHCP range on the primary router (ARRIS) so I just assigned the high IP address to the second router and all seems to work.

Yes, absolutely. Just keep adding routers, follow the process and make sure that you keep the IP addresses for each new router unique (192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.3.1, 192.168.4.1. etc.) I stopped at two private networks because I ran out of hardware I may do an update video and do three private networks.
