Thanks again Mr Lloyd! You are a life saver! I've always wanted to upgrade the speakers on my car for well over a year. The local car audio shops near my home have told me that since my car is a newer, more recent model. I'd have to get the blueprints for my audio system so that they could upgrade my speakers and add my 1200 watt amplifier to the existing stereo. So, rather than risk letting them butcher my car. I decided to wait. And, during the past year, I've found a lot of videos and tutorials like yours that have made it possible for me to save money by doing the work myself. Thank you, I'm very grateful! Now,... I just need to switch out those pesky door speakers.

Your video helped a lot. In my 2016 Sonata the speaker magnet is firmly attached, so I had to cut off the entire back of the plate (except for the connection tab), and decided to screw the new speaker to the plate rather than glue it. I then found I had to grind off the back of the screws... Having all the tools handy was a big help: glue gun, side grinder, soldering iron, etc. And once I got one completed, the rest went fairly fast. Thanks!

I have a 2011 GLS and I just completed this upgrade today. I used the sony XS-R1646 in all four doors. I am somewhat of an audiophile and have mixed opinion on the results. The good news is that the sound quality is improved. The downside is that the balance is off and one can't really tweak it how it needs to be(unless a new head unit is purchased). While the factory speakers are very cheap and inexpensive that system is tuned to the perfection to sounds as good as it could. Since the back speakers never had a tweeter there was no need for them to get a high freq signal. So when I listen to the new speakers(although there are some highs) they are somewhat muffled because they aren't really getting the whole frequency range. I tried messing with the Bass/midrange/treble and I ended up at +3/0/-3. But it will probably bother me to the point where I will start looking for a head unit and now possibly thinking about a subwoofer. It does sound better on the whole but there is something about the balance of tone and not being able to tweak that bothers me.

I have a 2013 Santa Fe, I'm sure it's the same sad paper cone speakers as you had. I didnt opt for the infinity 10 speaker system since to get it you need to upgrade the whole trim level of the car, to much extra money. The standard 6 speaker system is fine for soccer moms and news radio. Ask it to perform and it trips over its own feet.

Yep sure did. I have 70,000 7yrs left on it. That turbo sure does help. In those situations, slow drivers, and the ones who never know what lane there in. My only gripe is the tires. +Kyle Kaspar Crutchfield seems to think so. They list a ton of 6.75" speakers as the correct size for 2011-present Sonatas. It's pretty strange as standard speaker sizes used in cars are 5.25" and 6.5". I really hate it when companies decide to go non-standard with stuff like this, making it much more difficult to work on the product yourself.

A couple questions for you. Does the front have component speakers? If so, how do you replace components with coaxials?
@richardlloydusa10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they were component speakers but I do know they were poor sounding low quality speakers. The new coaxial speakers sound much better. They plugged in and function fine. The mixer controls on the head unit allow you to shape the sound anyway you want. The treble from the factory tweeters can be a bit much at times but you just turn down the treble and it sounds fine again. I did not like the stock speakers at all, again these sound much better. I went to an audio shop near me, real professional guys. Two things to mention they genuinely seemed to want to help me, one of the guys spent about an hour or so in my car just listening to music with me and explaining everything to me. He said for my sonata, the quality is already great he said we can do a basic setup of a custom enclosure box, amp, front speaker upgrade but I wouldn't really be able to hear the difference all that much. He told me I shouldn't really mess with the audio unless I have insane amount of money to spend about 1400$++ to hear a very big difference. So I'm not sure this is even worth doing.

+IAmSymbah Unfortunately I did not do any amp work for this video, I strictly just changed the door speakers. I wouldn't add an 8 inch speaker to that slot. the speaker that came with the car is a free air speaker design and any aftermarket is designed to go with a box. @richardlloydusa10 жыл бұрын
Yes there is a factory amp and I believe (not sure) it is behind the felt on the wall of the trunk on the passengers side. The infinity system is pretty good but if you want to change the speakers I can't see any reason why not. Usually the speakers have the ohm rating printed on them so prior to buying the speakers I would take a look at the factory speakers you have so you get the right Ohm rating. I did not have the 'premium' infinity system so the improvement in audio quality was huge just upgrading the speakers. As you could see in the video my speakers where just full range paper speakers. I am not sure how good the infinity speakers you have are so I really can't tell you if you will get an improvement in audio quality. Thanks for watching.

Did you call Hyundai to make sure that you have the remainder of the warranty on your CPO? I did. The dealer told me I had till 60,000 but I looked into it and I actually was supposed to have warranty to 100,000 miles because it was CPO. When you call Hyundai make sure you get the name and case number for your records.

do you happen to remember what size driver you used to remove the screws on the speaker? Are the rear speakers rivoted? Thanks in advance!

Great video. thank you. to answer the question about "Ohms" automotive audio uses 4 homs and residential audio uses 8 homs. that's just the way it is. . . . i think the reason is the voltage automotive stuff uses 12 volts and residential uses 110/120 volts (U.S) you were suposed to do a sound test before (old speakers) and after (new ones) so we can hear if there is a significant differance in sound quality

Thanks for the info and watching. As far as a sound test goes you would be depending on the less than adequate microphone on my video camera to do the comparison. I doubt you would actually hear the difference. I guess you are going to have to trust me on this the sound quality is much better. I know you can judge a speaker by it's looks but you can actually feel the difference. The system has more punch.

Why did he use wires on the new speaker if all that needs to be done is installing/replacing the speaker itself?

I'm glad you like your upgrade however if it was anything like the system I found on our 2011 you actually downgraded your speakers--severely downgraded. Factory speaker had the same tiny magnet as what you pointed out however it was not a ferrous magnet it was neodymium in other words that sony needed a double stacked magnet at 7" diameter to produce the same force on the voice coil as the tiny neo magnet does. I also found factory crossover system in place that renders the 2/way design of the sony's essentially useless as the tweets are cut off from the sound frequencies they are designed for. Ours does not have the infinity system either. Like I said I'm glad you are happy with it for everyone else please check to make sure you are actually upgrading not downgrading. Neo speakere have itty bitty magnets but are 100X stronger and cool the coil more effectively than ferrous counterparts.

Trust me the Sony speaker was an upgrade in every way, quality of sound and they are considerably louder with a greater dynamic range. The bass now has punch too. You may be right about the magnets but these speakers are no doubt better than the original factory speakers.

Trust me unless it was an infinity system. The factory speakers are absolute garbage. That cost hyundai not even $1 a speaker. The entire enclosure spells cheap. He upgraded big time. Sorry you don't know much about car audio..

SparkyBC Thanks Sparky. The audio quality is night and day better with the new speakers.

I am working on doing this currently, I find it strange though. I followed crutchfields site for positive and negative wires www.modifiedlife.com/2011-hyundai-sonata-car-radio-wiring-information/. However my speakers sound like they may have the wrong polarity, and in this video you seem to suggest the opposite of what crutchfield says.
@richardlloydusa9 жыл бұрын
I tested the output from the speaker with my digital meter and I am certain that the polarity I state in the video at 7:25 in the video is correct. The meter does not lie and my speakers connected correctly sound great. Here is a link to the audio system service manual www.hsguide.net/audio-472.html
