Lots of useful stuff in this video for anyone interested in turning a box with a suction-fit lid. Watch the box emerge from an unlikely blank as I eliminate defects, adjust proportions, and deal with several common box-turning problems. This lid tighten up and two days later needed refining, so you see how I do that.
Don't forget to see what the other 4-Wayers came up with:
Tomislav - • One of a kind suction ...
Sam - • Turning an Acorn Box w...
Mike - • Turn a Slip Fit Box - ...
4-WAYS comprises Sam Angelo, Mike Peace, Richard Raffan, and Tomislav Tomašić who suggested that having a few turners publish their approach to one project on KZbin at the same time should be interesting. 4-WAYS publish after noon on the first of each month, US time, which is evening in Europe. For Australasians it’ll be the 2nd. morning of each month. Each video has links to the others.

I'm so glad I've found your videos here on KZbin, Richard. It was a lucky find of your book, "Turning Wood with Richard Raffan" in about 1993-4 that first inspired me to take up woodturning and believe that it was something I could do and enjoy. Some thirty years on and I'm still enjoying it - very many thanks to you! It's also nice to actually be able to tell you so. I really appreciate your level, down-to-earth approach - delightfully devoid of the hype and promoting the gadget of the day that seems to infiltrate some woodturning videos. It's great to see and hear your turning, and thought prcesses in "real time". Thank you for so generously sharing your skills and experience.

Finally a box and at the same time a good show of what the top bevel of the skew can be used for. From now on I will definitely check/sharpen that edge as well. Thank you Richard! 😎

It's a very nice little box. Looks like a very good fit at the end. Not much of a "pop" but still a very good fit. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and satay safe.🙂🙂

Very nice box, really like the shape and design. It was really instructive seeing how you worked through the design process and adjusted as the wood required. As I've mentioned on the other 3 videos, I really look forward to the beginning of the month and these four videos. It is quite instructive watching the different design approaches each of you bring to these projects.

Very nice project, I'll soon try to recreate one at home. Is that VM100 chuck with the shark jaws your go-to set with most of your turning? Those jaws do seem to be handy.
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 11 ай бұрын
I've replaced all standard jaws with the longer Shark Jaws which provide a better grip for endgrain blanks and have a much wider range of uses when turning bowls. There's a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoeVhWmlf8x2n5Y

I’ve made boxes with pop lids and boxes without, and men like to pop the lid but rarely buy them, where woman like boxes with lids that lift with one hand and they buy them
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 11 ай бұрын
That's pretty well true. And threaded lid rarely sell unless the grain is aligned when the lid's right on. Most of my boxes over the past 40 years have sold to turners at woodturning symposiums and students in hands-on workshops. In the 1970s I hundreds a lot of pop-fit ring boxes that were purchased as containers for rings and earrings.
