People keep calling it the worst play call of all time, but I've always seen that as a reactionary take. The Seahawks ran similar passing plays at the goal line for 3 years and nothing went wrong. Nobody walks away thinking "why didn't they hand it to beast mode" when it works. The design is great. A pick move that makes it an easy walk in TD. Browner and Butler did their homework. Browner stood up, Kerse. Butler jumped the route. It was just an excellent read by them. 70 times out of 100 it's a TD. 29 times out of 100 it's incomplete. 1 time out of 100 it's intercepted. Wilson was never the type of quarterback you could just sneak in at the goal line. I don’t remember Russ ever having success doing that. Besides, we would just be running into the same clock management and timeouts issue when that doesn’t work either. Passing made sense. We can argue that it was the wrong read or wrong type of pass play, but there was nothing wrong with them throwing the ball.

@@Gabriel2oh6 do you remember what the 2022 eagles would do on 3rd or 4th and inches? The tush push. It only failed them 2 times out of 30 something times. People ignore tons of facts. 1. Pete lost ‘04 natty because he ran the ball 4 times in a row on the goal line. 2. Pick plays weren’t a penalty in ‘14. 3. Malcom made a great play and was able to make that play because Bill burned him on the same play in practice and singled him out on it. Ran the play once. So both Bill and Malcom deserves credit. 4. Russ threw a terrible pass. Pick plays should either be caught or incomplete. Never intercepted because the ball is supposed to be on the guy to slightly behind and lower. Russ’s pass was high and in front of the WR. Same exact timing and play, with a better located pass, at worst the play is incomplete. 5. Everyone knew Beastmode was getting the rock. Best time to change it up and run a low risk pass play. 2nd down. You can still hand it off 2 more times.

But, i think people didn't harp on it for long because Russ did something that most QBs (especially AR) never do; he took 100% responsibility for throwing the pick from moment one after it happened. In their emotional reaction, everyone assumed that he was just saying the "right thing" to the press to protect his coach, who already had a reputation for blowing it in the clutch. SO painful. Had to let go NFL watching for almost 2 full years after that. That hawks team was probably my favorite of all time. They win that SB, they become historically elite as back-to-back champs, and were STILL YOUNG. I think they had 4 in them, minimum; a real, homegrown dynasty in the making. But that one play was just devastating; it just created so much hurt, so much blame, so much distrust within the team...in one moment, dynasty disintegrated.

Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett were still talking about that play years after that Super Bowl loss to the Patriots. Second down on the 1 yard line the entire Seahawks team must have felt that the game and NFL Championship was won. That must have been a devastating loss for the Seahawks players.

And honestly, as a Patriots fan, this was an unlucky result for the Seahawks. Usually the worst case is an incomplete pass. Ironically, the worst decision of Super Bowl history also involved Malcolm Butler, Bill B benching him the entire game in Super Bowl 52. He played 98% of the snaps on defense that year and they changed the line up for the Super Bowl, and they still didn’t put him in even after Foles and the eagles were torching them. That was the worst decision in Super Bowl history because it impacted every defensive snap. Petes decision was just one play.

Run it on 2nd down if Beast doesn't get in call a time out. Throw on third. And last play run or throw. There used all four downs. Lynch would have scored on the 2nd as Pats were ready for the pass.

Everybody keeps coming back to this play but I'm glad Carrol knows the score. Butler made the play of a lifetime where every minute thing had to occur the way it did for that result. In 100 tries, Butler makes that 1 time and it happened that way. Hell, the receiver was just begging bringing the ball into his chest when Butler stripped it into his hands. Insane.
