What Is The Best Guitar For Paying Blues? - Stratocaster vs Telecaster - Les Paul vs ES 339

Hey guys in this video I compare my Fender Baja Telecaster with my Lone Star Stratocaster and my Epiphone Les Paul Standard with my Epiphone ES 339 Pro for playing blues. Which guitar do you prefer for playing the blues? Maybe one I didn't play? I reveal my favorite for playing the blues at the end of the video. Thanks for all the comments everyone! Just a note, I did not change any of my setup for each guitar, same amp same pedal, same reverb, just in case anyone is wondering. I may have had different results, had I tweaked the amp and pedal for each guitar. So there's that.

Tbh, it does sound like your rig has been dialled-in for the Fenders - the Epi’s can produce (different) great blues tones too but you’d have to tweak the settings to suit the P90 and humbucker pickups. All great guitars. The Tele for me! 🙂👍

I bought the Ultra Texas Tea Tele not only gorgeous in looks but it plays itself. The middle position with the S1 switch engaged is Blues/Rock tone machine. Was always a Strat guy for 40 yrs but I can’t put Ultra Tele down. I am converted. Really liked your singing as we’ll especially Sweet Home Chicago 👍🔥🎸🦅

Thanks for the video. I've wanted to do something like this for myself as a comparison test and the fact you did it saved me a lot of time and money. By the way you really rock. Like- I hope you play live in a band... I could feel the energy. Great stuff. The fenders sound thin (tight) and bright and cut through the music. The Gibsons sound dark and really warm. They tend to blend into the backing track.

Great review Rich! I was really digging the 339 tone and I’m not really a P90 guy. However I have that same 339 with the pro buckers with coil splits. I also have my strat and worn gold epi LP. I’ve been close to getting a tele at times but that twangy tone steers me away. I guess I like the glassier creamier tones of the other three I have. Oh and I just pre ordered the epi 59 outfit in honey burst from sweetwater and it’s scheduled to ship in late October. Can’t wait for it and would like to see you demo one if you get one.

Well I watched this vid 3 times..... And as much as I hate to say it the strat was the best sounding and had the best definition , at least for my ears. The tele sounded good as well and before you played I thought the tele would ace this test but had to change my mind after hearing the results. The gibson/epi did not rate anywhere close to the fenders, and if I had to choose the guitar I wanted to own myself the tele would win hands down..... but as much as it galls me to say it the strat kicked arse here in this shootout. In the big scheme of things I know my opinion don't mean shit.... just being honest about what I heard . Nice playing and singing though , I'm jealous lol

I have a pretty similar college and would say that the tele is my overall favorite. If I could only own one it would probably be a Telecaster. It’s hard not to love such a simple workhorse with beautiful ringing tones!

When I think of older blues I always think 335 but for modern blues it’s Strat all the way. I was surprised how good the Tele sounded though. Great playing Rich! 🤘

I had that tele, and i had more expensive ones, and was the best guitar i ever had.....it was only 450 bucks in 2015 worth way more then that..GREAT GUITAR!

For me it was between the Tele and the Strat, though I could tell the difference. I thought the 'Gibson' designs were muddy, though the 335 was OK way up the neck. Definitely the Tele or Strat comes out on top. Oh, and a VERY NICE JOB!

Sweet playing and singing! No hat and feather, but still very close in sound :). The Strat has a bit more growl and is closer to the original SRV tone, at least to my ears, but I would chose the Tele. I was expecting more from the P90 pickup.

I have to admit I thought the Tele sounded best; the Strat was a great second, but what really surprised me was how those two beat out the semi-hollow 339, which is traditionally thought of as a blues machine. I like some gravel and dirtiness in blues, but the two Gibson's were just too muddy sounding. I think the settings really needed to be tailored to each guitar; that's what any of us would actually do anyways when we play them and would have been more fair to the guitars. Still, great playing and singing!

In your hands (and voice) even some generic strings attached to a piece of wood would sound fantastic. I am a 72 old drummer, Braziian, trying to learn the blues and I still doing the very basic stuff and seem no to progress much in spite of studying it pretty regularly. I think the Tele was the clear winner to my ears followed closely by the Strat. I think however that the notes can sound good on about any guitar but the blues is in the heart of the player.

Teddy Boy here, one of your subscribers and this video just showed up in my feed though it's a year old. Have to go with the Tele though I'm a Les Paul and Strat man...but gotta say, you are a great Blues Rock singer! If you ever find yourself in Tucson Arizona on a Sunday evening, drop into the Rockabilly Grill (1 mile east of I-10 at the Prince exit out to Oracle Road, hang a left and 1 block up is King street on the right is the Rockabilly and the jam session goes 5 to 9). You would be a welcome addition...most of the players are pros and would lock in to your style and choice of material. Tucson has a good little Blues and Rock scene and musicians are the supportive type rather than "cut your head" competitive jerkoffs (if you know what I mean). We would make you feel right at home. If this is ever a possibility let me know and I can get you an email or a way to TM me. I'll even buy your beers hohoho! A good time will be had by all! Gotta say this video was exciting!

Nice playing ! My preference goes to the Tele: my first "serious" guitar. It's a very underrated guitar because of its simplicity, but you can do a lot of things in many genres with a (good) Tele. The Start sounded nice, but the pickup seemed a bit weak compared to the Tele. The 339 was surprisingly dark, as I usually dig P90's. The #2 goes to the LP in the Treble pickup position. Nice tone there. Cheers man !

For me, it's not a question of which is best. Like people, they each have their own character. They are appealing in their own way. As always stated, "The tone is in the fingers of the player". How their heart and soul is translated through the instrument.

Tele > Strat Oddly the 339 sounded muddy, almost like it needed a more punchy boost. Even more pronounced for the Les, where all but the mids felt like there was a need to push forward of the mix. The Tele was the champ at being "front and center" to my ears. Oh, and your playing, singing and the whole performance was awesome.

The strat sounded exactly like the live version of Pride n Joy with SRV + Albert King... Tele sounded different, the P90s had the phat tone , Humbuckers were heavy a lot like Albert King guitar playing pride n joy ❤❤❤❤❤ you're great man

ww i had that baja tele in 2015 or 16 it had the 7.5 radius, at the same time i bought a clapton strat, i wouldnt go near the strat that tele was prob the best i ever had...i didnt stick to it at the time, so i sold both...im a les paul, 335 guy now.....having a tele built as we speak, with the 52' in mind, lets hope its like the baja! And im looking to get another strat, bc there just awesome, but those are my 4 favs for sure! And i hate admit it but i like the tele and strats in this context!

The Fenders cut through the mix a lot better! The neck pickups on the Epis sounded a little muffled, perhaps they need some treble boost when using the neck pickup.
