As an Australian, whose Father and Uncles served in WW2 in the Pacific, I really appreciate this Series. It's history and stories are very relatable for me and it brings home why my Mother would never hear a bad word said about the American Servicemen whcame to our aid during that dreadful time. Australia served from 1939 to 1945. Lest We Forget. 🇦🇺

This story is tragic, but very interesting. My family and I really enjoyed touring The Pampanito while visiting San Francisco about 10 years ago.

Can I add this. There's many English, Scots, Welsh and Australian families who got their loved ones back home because of the efforts of these four crews of US Subs - they returned home to do so! 160 they picked up. Losing just one. That's very much appreciated by us in these British Isles. When I saw this story of the Pampamito's initial effort. I believe that living or dead now. These crews and their families should receive the compliment of recieving the George Cross from Britain. This was a medal awarded for conspicuous charity and gallantry in arduous and difficult conditions - it can be given to US serving personnel for the same reasons - I very nearly burst into tears when I heard and seen this interpretation. The crews and families of these submarines, should receive this medal. And the other time I can remember this medal being handed out was to the NHS - for their efforts with the pandemic. Through the most difficult time of 2020 to 2022. The other instance was to Malta during WW2 and a year before that fateful incident in this story. It's my delight and honour to push for this - for the crews of the four submarines. Captains downwards and to all hands still alive in 2023! To receive the George Cross! I will do some pushing for this. It will be a unique footnote to this particular story of ' The Silent Service' ! Even if they have mostly passed away. These awards should be made to their families. It is a very worthy and honourable recommendation.

If you are ever in San Francisco you can visit the Pampanito and take a tour. If you are related to any of the people picked up let the docents know. I'm sure they would be happy to hear about your story. The only time she's not there is when she's in dry dock which is not often.

I find this black and white historical series very inspiring. I watched it as a youngster back in the 1950's. I always stop the episode at 19:44. The year I was born!! Peace to all. ☮

I went aboard the Pampanito in San Francisco in 2012. She is in fine shape! I did not know this about her service though.

Was fortunate to tour the Pampanito in the San Francisco Wharf. Did not get a claustrophobic feeling.

It all comes down to the Japanese looking at the prisoners as less than human so instead of having those ships sail with a red cross and lit up. What was amazing about those men was they held no ill will to the American submariners an were actually happy to have been torpedoed

Unfortunately some of those POWs were gunned down after the sinking. It was thought that the commander of Australian forces in Singapore during its surrender, who was onboard Rakuyo Maru, was killed hours after the ship went down.

Gotta wonder why the Japanese escorts just didn't respond as aggressively when the subs hit so many of those ships...wonder why.

Kobayashi Maru escorts - packed with detainees and/or POW's - human shields! Provoking the no win scenario for submarine crews ! And there's no way to undo it! It's a horrible thing to be stuck with it. And other submarines in Allies !
