As a Yankees fan, I grew up playing on a LOT of teams where I wore a Boston hat and was a member of the Red Sox. Zero issue, despite hating the professional team. We, obviously, weren't them. Edit: Also, luckily, Brockman will never have to worry about his kid seeing his number if there are Yankee highlights. 5 has been retired for a _long_ time.

When I was playing ball as a kid, my dad was set to be the manager of our team, the Giants. We were excited as we were Giants fans and it was cool to finally be on the Giants. Then the coach of another team suddenly quit and my dad was compelled to take over there… the team was Angels. The season was Spring 2003… It was such a ragtag team of first year kids and troublemakers but we turned it around and made it to the championship that year. It turned to be my favorite year playing as a kid.

I am a diehard Cubs fan since I was old enough to say baseball. I'd sit on the floor next to my grandmother listening to Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau call the games on radio. Fast forward 30 years and my daughter wanted to plat T-ball, of all the teams that could have picked her she was selected by the Mets my Cubbies arch nemeses. It took every fiber of my being to root for her team and not burn her jersey and cap. The struggle was real folks, the struggle was real.

At the end of the day its the for the kids, but every year I've coached my kids baseball teams I've prayed I don't get the Cardinals (as a Cubs fan). As a coach I'd have to wear the hat to every game and be photographed with the team in a Cardinals hat. So far I've been able to avoid it. I always want to beat the Cardinals team a little bit more than the other teams lol. At the end of the day would it be a big deal if I was the Cardinals? Nah. But I'm happy I haven't been.
@Marilyn-x3r6d11 ай бұрын
He lost me right at the start ...... The idea of letting your kids pick which teams they support is ridiculous (unless it's a sport about which you're not passionate yourself). This is too important an issue, to let a kid choose. Also, why would you marry someone who supported a hated rival?
@tsrgoinc11 ай бұрын
I told my kids what football they should support, but they had the option of supporting other teams...but if they did I hoped they would enjoy the place they were living as they wouldn't be living in my house, I didn't care that they were 6 at the time I told them, they were 3 years older than I was when I choose.

Putting a 4-year-old in organized sports is really a disservice to a child. They need to play on their own and with their peers expressing their creativity and experiencing more movement experiences to develop a bigger movement vocabulary.
@TheRayzerBandit11 ай бұрын
While you have some good points, its not a good and evil situation here. Sure, individualized creativity may be more impactful and beneficial than appeasing a rigid structure of the sport, but getting any sense of socializing with their peers will require almost a total commitment to their willingness to approach others. If they have any sense of fear in approaching new people then they may not get any of those interactions by their willingness alone. Putting them in organized sports lets them figure out their comfort levels in a forced socialization scenario and allows them to develop those skills for when they have to be in more socialized situations (say going to school for the first time). Let alone, even if they don't enjoy the socialization aspect, its gives them experience in dealing with situations were they may not feel the most comfortable in. There's plenty of benefits and drawbacks to both sides in this issue.
@jeffcolumbia315111 ай бұрын
Why do those situations have to be structured sports? Or any other organized activity? I may be spitting into the wind but they are mission so much by being thrown into organized sports at that age. They are missing out physically, mentally and socially. There are so many skills that children that age can develop in interacting with their peers. Like cooperation, conflict resolution, and as I mentioned creativity. Making up their own games and activities. Sports have a great deal to teach kids and adults. I just think that putting a child that young in such a structured situation will inhibit them. Maybe when they're 9 or 10. When they have had those experiences and developed those skills. Plus, does a 4-year-old really understand the concepts of the game? I understand that in today's world what I propose is probably not going to happen. I just think it is inhibiting their growth and development putting a child in organized sports at that age.
