I was explaining the whole "banging the garbage can" thing to a friend at work because she never watched baseball before. I explained that as a hitter, you need to figure out what a pitcher is throwing, because all the pitches act different when they throw them. Some are fast and straight, some curve away from you, some look like they threw it fast but it's just a little slower and then the bottom falls out on them, etc. etc. She replied with "So, it sort of like Rock, Paper, Scissors between the pitcher and the batter?", so she got the jist of the whole thing. I explained that they had buzzers and banged a garbage can after a guy in the dugout saw the catchers signs to let the hitter know what's coming. Her response was "So, it's rock, paper, scissors, but I know you're about to use rock? That's cheating. And they won the championship? That's not right." She's a smart girl, but she knows nothing about baseball. If she can figure it out, then why the hell can't Manfred figure it out. I used to dream of hoisting that "piece of metal" when I was a kid. Manfred makes me sick, and I'm going to avoid the 2020 season like it's the Coronavirus.

@TexasSportsTV4 жыл бұрын
@@DeevoC No, she is wrong on both accounts. First, you are allowed to steal signs. That's normal and teams do this all the time and they relay it. It's how it was done. Second, it isnt just knowing the pitch. Its reading the pitch, recognizing it. Still deciding while seeing what type of pitch it is (slider, 4 seam, 2 seam, curve,) and so much more. You just get part of the info. Than seeing if it's an in area you like. Than hitting it all in seconds. I understand this is supposed to be oversimplified but it is oversimplified to the point of it being wrong. This "home field advantage" was so great they struck out more at home and scored less runs at home and won less games at home. The banging trash can. If you want to look at the actual advantage look at base stealing. That's where the advantage was. That's the one state that not only was better at home but was WORLDS better at home. Why? Because all you need to know is breaking or fast. You dont need any of the other factors. (Which as many former baseball players said if you're waiting for a signal instead of reading it yourself it is worse.) Breaking balls take longer to get to the plate. That's when you steal. Fast balls get there quicker. That's when you stay on base.

To a knowledgeable baseball fan, there is something happening every minute of a game. If you don't know what to look for, it just looks like a guy throwing a ball and another guy trying to hit it with a stick. However, baseball is like chess. The manager is thinking many moves ahead. The subtle hand movements of players, an OFer taking 5 steps to his left, matchups, etc..The sheer pressure in big moments can't be replicated. In most cases, a decent player will only get a hit 2.5 times for every 10 times at the plate. You literally marvel at what some pitchers can do and you are amazed at guys who can launch 50+ home runs in a season. One other very important thing: Baseball players make a lot more and play far longer than football players. Not to mention, CTE is not something you think about when you discuss baseball. Baseball and football are my two favorite sports, but if I were to choose, baseball would be on top. I guess because it's a thinking man's game. In fact, I love to see a 1-0 shutout. I simply marvel at a masterful pitching duel. I guess you have to have the right mindset and also be a student of the game to appreciate it. By the way, stealing signs (up to now) has never been specifically illegal in the rule book. If you can find me one team that doesn't attempt to steal signs, I'll give you my paycheck. They all do it, albeit some more sophisticated than other. Just so happens that one no name pitcher talked about it in public. Do you really think that there weren't lots of players and coaches who knew the Astros or Red Sox were stealing signs? Please! By the way, it wasn't all that cutting edge anyway. Aside from the camera, instead of having someone convey the pitches to the hitter via hand signals, they banged on a trash can. Do you really think that just came to Beltran one day? Of course not! He knew all sorts of ways to steal signs and probably had used that method when he was with the Cards or Mets, or etc..The more people nose into the game, the more it gets ruined. The players have policed themselves for many decades and have done just fine with it, but now we have players coming up and breaking long standing tradition. Plus, MLB is starting to follow the NFL by ruling and regulating the game to the point of absurdity. Getting back to sign stealing: The Astros weren't doing anything new. They just got called out nationally for it and that will ruin sign stealing for every team. is it wrong? Sure, but frankly, I've never seen it give any major advantage and I've seen a lot of games over the past 40 years and a lot of sign stealing. If your team is bad, it wouldn't matter if the opposing manager gave you a planned list of pitches, you are still going to lose 2 of 3 or all 3 in a series. The Astros were clearly loaded with talent and pitching always wins championships anyway and the Stros were stacked with pitching. And no, knowing what's coming doesn't turn a bad hitter into a good one. Finally, I'm not an Astro fan and I'm not saying they didn't go too far, but if left to the players, it would have been handled. I'm a Met fan by the way, which is the poster team for dysfunction. So Manfred doesn't surprise me. He's a clown and that's saying something when you consider the train wreck that Goodell is.

"banging of the trash cans which was originally perfectly legal." My impression is that banging trash cans is still legal. It's just that the pattern in which the trash cans were banging, combined with the banging being done by a person who is in no position to be able to observe anything relevant with the naked eye, served as evidence that triggered an investigation uncovering the use of electronic surveillance, which is not legal.

A couple of things that I would do to speed up the game of baseball. 1) Once a batter has two strikes he can only foul it off three times before it's a strike and he's out. 2) Limit the number of pickoff attempts a pitcher has in an inning, there is no carry over so if he doesn't attempt any pickoff in one inning he doesn't get those attempts in the next inning and if the pitcher makes a move like he is going to attempt a pickoff, but doesn't throw the ball, it still counts as an attempt

A big reason they don’t shorten the MLB season is because the more games you have in baseball the more it’s skill based compared to just luck based. If there was less games some weird shit would happen. I would consider that good but teams don’t want that because it’s harder to judge players. Also it used to end earlier, but they extended the season to do away with double headers and give players more rest

As a millennial baseball fan the 3 must have changes are this: 1. Shorten season to 100-120 games 2. Much better online support and content (this is painfully obvious to even non baseball fans) 3. Probably most important, get kids involved in PLAYING. If you play it from a young age, you get it. Period. Baseball might be the easiest sport to analyze from a players perspective as it is being played. People don’t understand cut off throws, bunting, balks, hit and runs, count leverage, how to run and rundown, two strike approaches, the list goes on. I refuse to believe this is a pace of play or “boredom” problem. I know plenty of people my age who like it because they played as a kid. I’m just really sick of non baseball people saying the biggest problem is pace of play. No the biggest problem is a lack of involvement from people on the notion that it is boring with no reason other than they watched it for 10 minutes and “nothing happened”

Baseball guy here: Manfred couldn't punish the players involved because of the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) Union. The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) made it so the players had immunity...which is why why the GM and Coach got fired (suspended). The MLB owners hired Manfred to be comish...so he can't do anything to his boss, only able to fine the team 5mil (which is the max able to fine a team as agreed upon by the owners in the CBA). The CBA is up for renegotiation in the next few years and you can bet that all of this will be brought up. I'm sure the other owners are not happy with the way the Astros were punished either, so it should change. Also, he seemingly had a real apology today for the 'piece of metal' comment which seems to have been accepted across the league, saying that 'he was trying to make a point'.

Limit time outs, and limit how long the time out can last. Or, give a fixed amount of time for time outs during the course of the game. Add bonus time if the game goes to extra innings. Make pitchers finish the inning. Batters can't leave the plate, and pitchers can't leave the mound. Ban the infield shift. Treat anyone sending illegal signals to the batter the same way you treated the Black Sox. Make the punishment and fines so bad that no owner would ever tolerate it. Fewer games spread out over the same time period, so that the games become more of an event. Make the National League get with the program and use designated hitters. Why are there two sets of rules for one sport? Get with the times. That means better phone apps, that means fair use of highlight clips, that means better online access to watching games, and replays. Let Japanese and Korean teams come tour the US, and when the MLB teams play them the games COUNT. Same goes for the Mexican leagues, hell let the Cubans come up and play. Baseball needs some cool special events. And...accept that baseball isn't football and shouldn't try to be. It's the pastoral game that you watch in a park with your friends. You can drink, you can talk, and you can relax. It's a fun event that goes on in the background of your get together. It's something to listen to in the afternoon at work, and if you step away from the radio for a few minutes it's fine. You don't absorb it the same way, you don't relate to it the same way, and you don't enjoy it the same way. That's okay, and shouldn't change.

Its actually a labor law that the commissioner can’t punish the players. Manfred is in a literal no win position.

I played soccer and baseball growing up both for competitive teams. I had to quit baseball because It was so boring and the long practices of just standing around was not fun

Ppl who are bored by baseball, never played baseball lol it's a very difficult game and the intricacies are what make the game interesting, but most ppl lack patience and that's why the game is what it is

Just goes to show how important the Commissioner position is to the sport. Goodell is bad, but at least he is professional to an extent and keeps to the shield. Silver is very personal and open and a part of the culture. Manfred is just a joke
@Fassnight4 жыл бұрын
@Timothy Weinand Heck no Silver is great. He is not as good as Stern but he is by far the best commissioner in american sports
@Fassnight4 жыл бұрын
@Timothy Weinand Right, like it was a lose lose for him. Of course I would have liked for them to stand up against china, but I understand they were in the middle of a tour and it's a business and topic he didnt want to be involved in

Pat's dad saying baseball lacks athleticism only to have his son grow up to play maybe the least athletic position in all of sports. Love you P Mac but thats just too funny

Make the MLB competitive for more thannl just the 10 richest teams. Revenue sharing and every team gets the same amount of payroll for players.

I don't think Manfred gave immunity though. I'm pretty sure the players union came up with that one.
@doesanyonehavegum3274 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of Manfred but he had no choice in granting the players immunity. In order to question the players about what happened, the MLBPA required that Mangred grant them immunity. He cant go back on that now.

Part of the reason Manfred is universally hated, even before this whole crap with the Astros, is cause the things he proposes to “fix” baseball 99.99999999999999999999% of the time is something that didn’t need to be “fixed”. And as for the beaning thing, I actually agree with Manfred. You can have seething hatred for the Astros, you can think they weren’t properly punished, but you can’t react to it by trying to hit them intentionally with baseballs, and there isn’t a chance in hell pitchers would hold back when throwing a ball at an Astros player.

The problem with allowing steroids is that it puts the guys who want to stay clean in a pinch. You can’t make someone inject chemicals if they don’t want to
@willster87594 жыл бұрын
To the guy who said steroids shouldn’t be punished, that nearly destroyed baseball in the early 2000s. It invalidated statistical milestones. It would be like invalidating the all time pass touchdowns in the NFL to were getting 500 TDs means almost nothing. Cheating is cheating. Astros should be punished. Also I disagree strongly with Pat. Baseball is the greatest sport ever, despite the crap that has gone down recently. I hope this mess can be fixed.
@blakepettys284 жыл бұрын
Manfred is NOT the face of baseball. The face of baseball is the players, and that’s why people don’t watch, because the MLB doesn’t market the players.

Pat you're god damn hilarious. I fuckin hate baseball too my man lol. Our best days were with Bonds before he got jacked and started breaking records away from here in Pittsburgh lol.
