In this video, I discuss why the Mercedes AMG 6.3 M156 engine is a favourite among enthusiasts. The m156 was featured in the w204 C63, w219 CLS63, w211 E63, W212 E63, R230 SL63, as well as others. I start by going over some differences between the standard M156 engine and the SLS AMG M159 version, then go into more detail on the problems with the M156.

Hey 👋 there just curious what kind of maintenance have you done for it and is there any parts that has failed yet all these times since owning yours ? @DavidTseng92 2 жыл бұрын
@@erico6117 Hi! I've had my car for 4 years and 30K miles and no issues with the engine. Only thing that have been surprise repairs were a torn thrust arm bushing and fuel pump control module but that's not necessarily M156 related. I've done a lot of preventative maintenance with parts from FCP Euro. For the engine, I've done the fuel injectors, pcv valves, new spark plugs and gaskets, valve gaskets. Non engine preventative maintenance have been control arms, flex disks, abc fluid flush, accumulators. I might do the headbolts, lifters and cam shaft adjusters in a year or two. I personally think the M156 sounds better which is why I chose it over the M157. Naturally aspirated engines will probably never come back at Mercedes which makes NA engines more special to me. Everyone has a difference opinion on it so it's all up to you which one you'd like.
@pramay5116
@pramay5116 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidTseng92 Would you say that the lifters are a necessary job? How can you tell if your lifters are failing before it happens, or do you just have to get them done before any warning signs?
@John-pl4fl
@John-pl4fl 2 жыл бұрын
@@pramay5116 you will get camshaft position or correlation codes when they start to go. The most noticeable sign of failing lifters is loud ticking from the engine bay at idle. I LOVED my 6.2. I had the 2009 C63 and it was incredible. the mating of the transmission and the engine was perfect. I did get the pre-emptive headbolt swap too. Then, a lady in an Escalade backed over the hood and totaled it out. I replaced it with a 2012 5.5 biturbo CLS63 and its great, but not as raw as the C63 was. I loved that engine so much, I'm thinking about getting a cheap ML63 and run it forever...

The M156 is an awesome engine despite it’s problems. Had an 2009 C63 with the P30 (it didn’t have any engine upgrade in those years) then a 2010 E63. The sound they make is incredible! In 2012 I moved up to another E63 with the M157 biturbo and P30. It was noticeably faster and still sounded very good but not like the M156. I believe he says in the video that starting in 2012 the M156 engines have the black plastic valve covers but it starts with cars made in the early part of 2011. I’m not certain of the exact date but from what I can tell it’s production dates as early as January 2011 for model year 2011 in the US.

Also, one more potential issue with these: Failing fuel injectors. My 2015 C63 507 had an injector stick open at 19k miles... All 8 were replaced with new spark plugs under warranty

It is an informative video or a commercial? You talk in lengths about the issues of the 156, than say that the 159 resolved it issues, but none of the issues mentioned is addressed but a list of "why does the M159 is better" I'd take the M113K every day.

I was on the fence for quite a long time now. I wanted to buy an E55 but I always had my eyes on the C63 as well. But I also really liked the turbo charged cars. I now went for a 2012 E500 Coupe with the 4,7 liter V8 Bi-Turbo. Unfortunately they didn’t make the W207 as an AMG. So I picked the most powerful W207 out there. I’m really happy with the car so far. Magnificent car and stunning design, the M278 is also a hammer!

Yeah, Tasos had to be mentioned in this video. He knows more about these engines than most of Mercedes mechanicals. His videos helped me out when I rebuilt the engine. All started with a faulty injector stuck open and pour petrol into the cylinder. Be careful guys and replace injectors. They are quite cheap, and Mercedes dealer will give you some money back if you return your old injectors, so it's worth to prevent a hydro locking situation. Good video, I can see there is lots of research behind. Congratulation!

they were not bad but definitely not the best motor made by amg workin at the dealer we saw alot of issues mainly on the ML 63’s cylinder head bolts breaking off and coolant getting into the cylinders cross contaminating. the super charged M113 in the SL 55 was a much better engine and produced roughly the same power.

As a Mercedes mechanic, I like the m156 and m159. But my heart still belongs to the good old 2,3-16v (M102.983)Engine from 190 /W201 ..... Just rebuild it after 250000km and have fun without fearing of expensive damages... And it gives you a racecar feeling too..... I don't like turbo engines, as like m156, I like the roaring sound of those NA-engines. The C63 is the nowadays 190e 2,3-16v. But it's too modern for me, I like it oldschool! 😊👍

Watch Tasos' videos. The aluminum silicone cylinder coating is a very serious concern. 4.7 liters engines in w212 E550 have the same potential problem. Other than that it's a good engine. But unlike lifters in m156, the cylinder coating can't be fixed.

Great vid as always. The M156 is the last of the BIG NA V8's. We'll probably never see another mass produced. When I was buying my CLS I bounced between the 55 and the 63. In all my reading and test drives it became clear the M113K was the better engine long term and with long tubes the sound perfection. Much respect to the M156 however.......legend for sure.
