One of my favorite brushes with fame was meeting Levon.. I was so excited I reached out to shake his hand and I simply said “I love you Levon!”. He looked at me, shook my hand and said “I love you too man!” Seriously one of the coolest moments of my life.. I’ll never forget it!

I met him in 1989 on a movie set in SC. I was an extra and stand-in for the bartender in the movie that became Staying Together. I was a fan and probably acted like a goofball. He smiled and was very friendly and patient with my questions.

I delivered to The Woodstock General Store.....used to have pull a loaded hand truck up the stairs open the doors and pull it to the back stack and do it again. Couple regulars there every morning would always say good morning hold the door and just be helpful.if they could.... Found out one morning as his funeral procession went thru town the one gentleman was Levon Helm...he always helped me and said thank you to me....I never knew who he was...

When I saw the Shooter, I thought the scene with Levon and Mark was one of the best in the entire movie. Levon's talent and his natural ability coupled with his line delivery really made the scene work. I knew it was Levon when I saw it and he was awesome!

When i was a kid i hung out watchin the local blacksmith,hung out at the local garages and hot rodders. Then i used to sit with the gunsmith guys just soaking it all up. As a musician, Levon was an inspiration in my younger days. After his cancer, I thought we would all be left to his early recordings. But his true spirit allowed him to grace us with two additional records prior to his passing. When I heard he was cast in the Shooter with Mark, I was excited to see him in public. This scene was the best in the film in my opinion.

I was born just a few miles from where Levon was from ( Marvell, Arkansas ) area and we were purty dam proud of the man ! I was around him some and very much enjoyed his company, hurt a lot when he passed. I'm an old man now but still think about him now and then. 👍

One of the best scenes in movie history. Levon was an awesome actor and an incredible musician. He had to be extremely passionate about his work to go through the brutal chemo and radiation treatments for the type of cancer he had and then come back and do the things he did before he died. I have the same kind of cancer and there are no words that can describe the pain you experience in your throat. Levon was one cool and tough ol' dude!

Thanks for the history lesson his part was one of the best parts of the movie. It's an old man who's smarter than lot's of folks give him credit for. Knows a criminal would not come to his house asking questions. A true criminal would not even give him the time of day. God bless you always Rich. I watched this three times in a row. It got better each time seemed to me. I still find it hard to believe he's gone and it's been over 3 years. The world is definitely a far lesser place now without him in it. I survived my fight with cancer (2/3 of my colon along with a Stage 3-C tumor was removed in 2010 followed by 6 months of Chemo treatments. One each week.) I only wish he had too. Donald TittleJr Donald, having known Levon personally and watched with my own eyes his thoughts on being diagnosed with cancer. It was 1998, he got very hoarse and could not talk, a couple of weeks went by and it was not getting any better, they put a camera through his nose and found the cancer. The doctors advised a layrngectomy he did not want that, his first remarks were he always considered himself the drummer so loosing his voice was not a huge deal but he wanted to live and continue to play music. He went through 28 rounds of Chemo. His voice was a whisper or raspy sound but slowly it came back to about 80%. He did continue to play the drums the entire time he was getting treatment and after he returned home from having the tumor cut out. He went on the make 3 albums, and won three Grammy Awards for all three albums, and also presented a lifetime achievement award from all of his years in the band. Robbie Robertson screwed Levon and other band members out of tons of money in the song writing credits. Most all of the songs the band played/recorded were songs that Levon told of his child hood. I have nothing against Canadians, but how could a Canadian (Robbie Robertson) even think of any type of songs that are clearly about the south. Robbie showed up as Levon was in his last few days of his life, the cancer came back, the man that screwed Levon out of probably millions of dollars that was due Levon, that cad showed up, what for, Levon has hated him for years. I do think Levon was an amazing drummer, fine mandolin player, and a fair guitar player, I thank God for the extended chance for people to thank Levon, pay tribute to him and show their love to him. Levon Helm is/was one of my favorite human beings, With appreciation, I must point out that "The Last Waltz "was made by Scorcese in 1976. It was Thanksgiving and the final concert for "The Band." It was filmed live at one of the West Coast halls owned by Fillmore. Musical guests covered a broad spectrum but were mostly "the greats" in their genre`. Helm was the real glue of the group, with Robbie Robertson as the frontman, playing lead guitar, Other members, every one crucial to their unique sound, were, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. Bass, keyboards, and cut-down Hammond B-3 with Leslies and reeds, respectively.

Saw The Band in 1986 at a great small club in Providence RI called Lupo's Heatbreak Hotel. Stood right in front of Rick Danko. Got Levon to sign my shirt. Have it framed in my man cave. Richard Manuel killed himself 2 weeks later. Still saddens me today

According to Gus Dudgeon, Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics for Levon, was inspired by The Band’s co-founder, drummer, and singer Levon Helm to name the title character after him. The Band was apparently John’s and Taupin’s favorite group in those days. However, in 2013, Bernie Taupin said that the song is unrelated to Levon Helm.

I actually looked up this amazing scene to learn who this actor was because his little character role is a true work of art. This is what ever actor would aspire to achieve. When I saw the Shooter I had no idea that the drummer for The Band was the same as the actor in the movie. I had the 8-track "Big Pink" when it came out, and listened to it till it fell apart. Oddly enough, over all the years of listening to The Band music, I had never seen pictures of any of the members, and I still haven't seen the movie "The Last Waltz". So, I was amazed when I learned (only last year) that Levon Helm was the actor in the Shooter.

Met him at the Channel nightclub in Boston in 1981 on a solo tour. What I remember is that big, southern gentleman grin he gave me when he shook my hand, like I was important or something. Can't remember the show, can't forget his warmth.

MAN!!!! I had no idea this was the drummer from The Band! The Weight is my all time favorite song, Blows my mind. When he played Chuck Yeager's friend and Yeager's test plane went down and they drove out to find him and someone said, "Look! Is that a man?" And he said Yeah, you damn right it is!!! I still get goose bumps.

That scene in shooter was my only experience watching Levon until this KZbin vid popped up. The scene, although short added so much substance and weight to Swagger’s story! Great tribute to a ridiculously talented dude!
