I love how Rich is able free form beautiful jazz passages, with the ease of singing in the shower. It would be impossible to remember the jukebox full of music in his head. Improvisation is the only path through this awesome style he has created for himself. There is no dust on this great artist. As long as I remain alive, I will have the most respect for this jazz master. Rich is a gift to us all.

Glad to see DAngelico is back to making archtops. I grabbed an excel DH in 2014 when i was starting university. Real fun guitar but its a little hard for me to since it has a super flat 16 in fret board. But it taught me so much about myself and what i want out of a jazzbox. Glad to see DAngelico is broadening the lineup beyond semi-hollows and flat top electrics

Great guitars for the price, I bought one five years ago, love it. BUT !!! Really, I am sure Rich could make ANY guitar sound good. I have known many great pro players down the years and one thing they all had in common was they could make any guitar sing, no need for an expensive top of the range guitar, I have seen pros in the studio using whatever junk came to hand. Or they just take the Telecaster and get any sound needed from that, but Rich has his style and sound and certainly makes this D'Angelico sound way better than mine. I always say 99% of the sound is in the player's fingers and 1% in the guitar.

I am completely happy with my 2019 model of this excel vintage sunburst. I setup and strung it with flat wound 12-52…sounds very nice. My only complaint is the cheap ChiCom volume and tone pot. Other than that very nice for $600 with factory case from GC.

I was looking at and comparing the older model of the XL, the Ibanez and the Loar 650. At the time, the Loar was the only one that was all solid wood and it sounded great acoustically. Since I play at home unplugged, that’s what I bought. I’m going to try the Exel again.

I thought the D'Angelico sounded really nice. I like them a little punchy, clear and "silky" if that tells you anything. Would like to try one of these.

Hey Rich, are these still built in Korea, or are they made in China now?

Great guitar but it pales in comparison to your talent. You are an amazing musician!

How would you compare the EXL-1 and the Eastman Ar372 in terms of unplugged performance? I was able to try the latter in a store and was not very impressed with it in this respect (although it sounded great with an AER!), knowing of course that it is a 175-style model, with laminated woods (like the EXL-1)

Very nice D'Angelico, Rich! By the way, my friend just bought a D'Aquisto beauty, and he's using your custom string set! (Me too)

I notice my earlier EXL-1 doesn't have the dove tail at that end of the neck. It has block inlays instead of split blocks.

I like the throw back model because it didn't have the gaudy headstock, but alas, I could not find one to see to try out to see if it was worth da money. I like the looks of much of it, but that gaudy headstock is just too much.

The headstock on the D'Angelico turns me off. The rest of the guitar is gorgeous.... but that headstock!! [BARF!] As usual, Rich demos the instruments well. I want to pick up a new archtop without taking a 2nd mortgage on my home. I'm leaning toward the Eastman AR810CE. 🙂🙃🙂

It’s the same headstock design as original D’Angelico’s!😂

The D'angelico looks nice and sounds great but I can't get along with a 17" wide body. I think, for me, 15 1/2" is about right. The EX SS Premier in wine looks promising. The Ibanez AG95 too is the right size but not is not offered in wine.

Sorry the headstock does distract from the rest of the guitar. It is like colonial meets art deco in a headon collision.
