It worked! To the people saying just buy a new pair: This was my first time ever taking apart a pair of headphones or using a soldering iron and it took about 45 minutes going very slowly. Most people already have pliers and I didn't have wire strippers so I used wire cutters. In total I only had to buy a soldering iron and some solder which were $25 total. Paying $25 and spending 45 minutes fixing them is a lot better than spending $150 on a new pair. Plus now I have everything I need so the next time I need to fix a pair I am good to go.

RichsMethods how do you prevent this from happening. since i watched this video ive broken 3 headphones because of this. and since i am an audiophile, i dont want to do this every time my 300 dollar headphones get bent. so how do you prevent it, are there protectors or anything because its getting really anoying
@RichsMethods9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Tang Pretty much just baby your headphones as much as possible. I keep mine in a case when I'm not using them. I NEVER wrap them tightly. Usually I just fold the wire gently and place in a small zippered case. Try to prevent pulling on the cord, and always grasp them at the plug.
@new519 жыл бұрын
Kevin Tang Some things you might want to try 1 Wrap some insulating tape to stiffen the wire-pin junction to prevent bending 2 Avoid bending at this point 4 when soldering, a spot of flux at the contact point helps, otherwise tinning before is ideal. 5 bending the earth terminal away helps in soldering the 2 signal wires; 6 If you get down to soldering you could add a heat shrink sleeve at the wire jack junction

this is by far the most common headphone malfunction. Im surprised they havent invented some sort of solution for this to never happen.. they should use reinforced wires or some kind of super protection at the end of the wire/jack on all headphone / earbud devices.
@vojtech230410 жыл бұрын
:D why should they? Think about it. The more broken headphones are there the more people will buy new one. So they will have more profit.
@akuma4u10 жыл бұрын
Vojtěch Konderla true but some 3rd company should have come out with a product to make the area where the jack meets the wire stronger. fire is faster to remove the coating btw also, you can do a continuity test with a multimeter, the tip of the headphones left, next is right, and the last part is ground. if it's a combo jack it's left right ground and mic, if your multimeter doesn't have a continuity test, you can test resistance and it's the same thing as continuity test, if you get a resistance = a circuit loop is closed. That's how you test what part is which.

Dude, you soldering game really sucks. You don't "just dab it on." Best method: After the soldering iron is hot, hold the tip of the iron to the connection point for a few seconds, then carefully touch the solder wire right where the iron and your wire meets the connector. You WILL get a nice little bead of solder the first time, everytime, and you won't have mess of droplets on your work surface, and you'll have much less solder on the tip of your iron.

Great video. The replacement plug end can be used over and over. I just fixed an expensive headphone with a plug I bought online from china and it works perfectly. Sure the initial investment of purchasing a soldering kit is a pain but it will work for repairing kids toys and many other items. Make sure you have some flux paste to get the solder to flow onto the parts. Also make sure the soldered wire doesnt touch the screw on cover or it will short and you will only get sound from one earphone. Electrical tape wrapped around outside will separate from cover. Thanks Rich

Hmmm- I need to get a pair to see how they work. If there is a distortion in the sound with bluetooth headphones, then there might be something wrong with the plug that goes into the device. What type of plug is it? In other words, is it on an iPhone (lightning plug), USB, or headphone plug?

RichsMethods No its wireless Bluetooth syncs with the phone so it doesn't have hookups
@poidachi60037 жыл бұрын
so your saying it's wireless? that happened to me too, when its connected to my laptop its clear and loud but if I use my Nokia C1 its literally too much distortion. +1 on using hot glue for holding it all together (I'm a bit more generous on it though). I also try to get replacement plugs with sleeves that fit nice and tidy on the cable, and in the case where the cable is either smaller or too big to use the sleeve I put on one or more layers of cable shrink wrap (staged when more than one) which gives a more professional finish and prevent the cable from over-bending at the plug.

Nice video, sometimes it's just fun to fix stuff. Most people already have all these tools and it's a cost effective repair. Others have no useful skills and just bitch about people on youtube trying to help others! Keep up the good work!

great tutorial, may I add a few tips: 1. Dont strip back enamel, just solder right over it, it will penetrate the enamel insulation with no problem. 2. Use some nail clippers (or dedicated mini side cutters) to clean up solder and excess wires. much cleaner than scissors. 3.When soldering, the solder will wick toward the heat so its best to heat the base then add the wire and solder on top, it will wick through the wire to the base and wont create a cold solder joint, and use flux when you can, it keeps the solder from rolling right off chrome plating. 4. The jack has a crimp on the end, use it! Crimp the cable with pliers or a crimper (the ones shown have a weird U shaped press, thats the crimper) its better than hot glue and youll be able to R&R that jack again in 6 months when they fail again. They always seem to break right at the jack base so always start looking there. Those that say buy new ones should consider that some of these ear buds cost up to $1000, (google Shure SE846) and tossing them due to an open is out of the question.

Thanks a lot .. My left one just stopped working when i twisted the wire.. I'll buy the piece first thing tomorrow

Great tutorial :) The jack is the most vulnerable area . This is the spot that gets broken most of the time. Unfortunately, the jacks on the market are very poor quality and will decrease the sound quality significantly if you choose to replace the original with those.

I've got about 10 pairs of headphones waiting to be repaired. Gonna have a session on it. Totally worth the time and money. Maybe you silly haters can just borrow someone else's tools for the job, or repair all your mates headphones with the gear you buy, making yourself useful in your community, saving electrical landfill, and getting one over The Man with your rad fixer skillz? Thanks Rich for the vid.

Pro tip: Instead of sanding off the enamel of the signal wires, melt it off using a lighter or torch. Good video btw, well made and instructions were clear.
