How to Repair Headphone Wires

Hello,
Welcome to my fourth installment to my Headphone Repair series. In this video I show how to fix the headphone wire itself. A lot of time a short can occur in the wire (instead of at the plug like I show in my other Headphone videos). Also, headphones wires can get cut or damaged very easily. This video shows you a simple way to make these types of repair.

This problem will most probably be due to broken wires. It could also be due to the insulation being broken but either way if you can definitely know the area of the wire that is causing you the problem then this method will work. Before trying I'd make sure it wasn't something as simple as a dirty headphone jack or the device's socket

Richs you're the MAN! I spent 3 hours working on my broken headphones. Failed 4 times and succeeded the 5th time! So satisfying and so proud of myself lol. I failed before because I didn't burn the copper wire (you mentioned to do so in some other video but not this one). 2. Be careful with the wire's length. Say, after getting rid of the rubber, with 5 cm of the red wire, only burn the first 2 cm and leaving 3 cm so that when you tape the two red wires together, the exposed and burned wires don't get contacted with other wires. wow! i have no idea that it works this way. usually, my headphones can longer be use for 3-5 months because i always broke them. i'm tired of buying a new one so i came up with an idea to watch some tutorials about repairing broken headphones. i tried to attempt couple of times just by cutting the wires and attach them with the match color and no wonder they will not be fixed because you need to burn the tip of the wires first and attach them separately. thank you so much. this was posted nine years ago but still a big help.

Thanks. I had tried to do this awhile back with an old headset I have and didn't realize you had to burn the enamel off, so I thought it was just shot. I found it while I was cleaning and decided to actually look up how to fix it, and it's now working perfectly again(except for the mic, because I broke it off when I tried to fix it the first time)

When joining in line pairs its always wise to stagger the joints then cover them with shrink tube. A touch of solder would be nice. If pull strength is an issue, put a piece of wire with it before shrink tubing.

Amazing video! Thank you so much! Just repaired my earphones that been lying around for over a year! Good thing I kept them. For those asking about the white thingy. Basically you will find 2 wires. For me both had the white insulation in them. Twist and untangle and you will see the wires and the white insulation (so 4 bits). Separate because you don't need the white and cut it off. Burn the wires match them up and there you have it

To determine if the short is in the plug or in the wire, bend the wire starting from the plug working your way up to each earphone. Do this while listening to music with the headphones. If the sound goes in and out when you bend the wire at a certain area, the short most likely is occurring there. If the sound only goes in and out near the plug, then it'd probably be best to replace the plug. Hope that helped.

you can also use sandpaper to remove the insulation. for newer wires, the color coating needs to be removed too. Copper should be exposed first and sandpaper can expose the copper. You will notice that the color changes to copper once you use sandpaper on the color-coated wires. When they are copper-colored, that is the time you do the twisting.

Keep bending the wire starting at the plug (keeping the rest of the wire stationary), and see if the sound goes in and out as you bend the wire. The short is most likely occurring in the area where the sound consistently goes in and out.

Your video was very helpful. You did a wonderful job explaining the steps. The camera focus mde it hard to see what you were doing. Future videos I recommend Manual Focus. Hold the wire about where it needs to be and set the focus on the camera. The auto focus made it really hard to see the tiny wires.

If the wire is dead, it's where you bend it is where the bad portion of it is, mine broke from being crushed in a chair, the earbuds themselves are okay but the wire on the inside was frayed so I need to cut the portion out and rewire it. If there's a hole in your cord then that's most likely where it is

you need to kinda twist different portions along the wire to test. Sometimes may not even be the problem of the wire so you need to check
