Back in the days of haggler, hearns, leonard , duran, mancini, arguelo, etc... the 70s, 80, and 90's killed it compared to todays cherries and ducks.

Snchez, Monzòn. They're a different breed. Imagine, Cris Eubank jnr vs Bennie Briscoe, or Carlos Monzòn vs Gennedy Golovkin. 😂

@@colincampbell7928 New school fighters would get knocked dead. Monzon would smoke anyone from 168 to 145 of any current fighter. And they'd run and hide.or drop belts before even thinking about it... Monzon was the proto Mike Tyson of his day, a hungry early mike Tyson before he got paid.... Here's a card from the 80's for ya.... Duran, Leonard, Holms, with Marvin Gay star spangled banner on like cbs in 1981. That'll never happen again. Anyway, those that know, know,,,

Absolutely nuts that a guy like Geraldo at the age of 25 had a record like that, and had been in that many wars and road fights. Nowadays, most guys havent even graduated from prospect status at 25. Geraldo had a physique more akin to a columbian or Venezuelan fighter. Lanky and athletic

I remember this from comments made by Sugar Ray Leonard at that time. He said that Heraldo was the hardest puncher he had ever faced at that point in his career.
@t9190kp Жыл бұрын
Geraldo was a full blown middleweight. Ray was welterweight that went up a few lbs for that fight. Of course he'd feel those punches more.
@bennylevine387 Жыл бұрын
Nice one. Geraldo was one of the more hard to figure fighters, giving hard fights to some real good dudes, then falling easily to lesser likes. A real dangerous X-factor of a fighter.

One thing about this guy, once he retired, he stayed retired he made no comebacks and he lived a good simple life, and he helped a lot of people. It's just so sad how he just died suddenly and they never revealed this cause of death that he wasn't ill or anything but they never have said anything. His wife kept it private.
@stephendunn446 Жыл бұрын
He died from a heart attack according to his wife.

@stephendunn446 I just talked to a guy that knew him. That was a personal friend to him... he said that he had trouble breathing and that it started in his calf. So he suspects blood clots.traveled to his lungs 🫁

Mexican boxers are teak tough, Geraldo was a cagey fighter and had a good ring IQ..The marvellous one is my all time favourite boxer, a real true champion. So sad he has gone so early, one of the greatest boxers ever. RIP the marvellous one.🙏. Thanks again Rich, 🥊

This was a perfect tuneup for Hagler going into the Minter fight. Certainly not an easy fight, but one where Hagler had to work on all aspects to win. Also, another Hagler fight where him not dominating completely makes many think he was close to losing, or give more points/rounds to the foe.
@andydnyc Жыл бұрын
What's crazy is that he boxed someone as tricky as this with a world tile shot coming up. Either extreme confidence by Hagler, or pretty risky matchmaking by the Petronellis.
@andydnyc Жыл бұрын
Completely agree with your point, which is missed by so many. Hagler's appearance makes some thing that if he's not dominating, he's losing. Certainly this worked against him in the Leonard fight.

Marvin’s greatest attribute after his great chin was his long arms .. Minter who was 3 inches taller said of him “ that you jab and he jabs but his land and yours don’t) …he also always kept his hands high around a high guard and tucked in chin ………magnificent fighter …

I love your videos and the way you really go behind the scenes to set the story. How about an Aaron Pryor documentary? The man is an absolute legend at 140 but with only Arguello and Cervantes as his greatest opponents. Defeating Hearns in the amateurs and being turned down by Leonard he was quite possibly the most avoided fighter of his era. Losing to Davis and not qualifying for the Olympics made him struggle for big fights.
@RichtheFightHistorian Жыл бұрын
Thanks, NewyorkRicanSoulPodcast. I did one one Pryor awhile back. It should pop up in a search.

Geraldo vs Minter would have been very interesting. So would Minter v Obel too 🥊
@triplejunction7073 Жыл бұрын
It seems that Geraldo was one of those talented fighters who didn’t have proper training or management throughout his long career. It appears he just got by on natural ability. That’s why he was so inconsistent..
@charleshammer2928 Жыл бұрын
He could fight and he could punch. BUT much like Wilfredo Benitez he didn't always train very hard. I think he would show up not in top condition against lesser fighters.

You have a great voice for this. An idea for future episodes might be commenting on controversial decisions in fights some of your viewers might be less familiar with? Something about those bad decisions makes for good television, although it might not reflect well on the sport... Up to you of course?

This fight shows that Marvin the legend and Marvin the fighter aren't quite the same. I like the mythical match-ups Hagler-Golovkin,Hagler-Canelo,I think both would go the distance (those chins!) And 2 close controversial decisions.
@GilturnerknocksoutphonyFloyd Жыл бұрын
I think Marvin beats both of them. I think of Hagler v Monzon and Hagler v Dick Tiger and Hagler v Emile Griffith. Griffith would have been difficult for Marvin with Emile’s style and endless energy. And Monzon what a fight that would have been
@RichtheFightHistorian Жыл бұрын
It's a styles make fights type thing. Geraldo used some awkward movement and Hagler could have trouble with fighters who used their legs. As far as mythical match-ups go, I think Hagler would have solved GGG & Canelo by the late rounds. Prime Jones Jr & B Hop would have probably given him a lot of trouble.

Somewhere around mid to late 60’s i strtd noticing the elastic waistband was getting closer to the nipples than the bellybutton. Doesnt mean thts when it strtd just when i noticed.
