Holy cow Rich, it’s like you’re digging into my adolescent brain- not many remember the name Fred Hutchings, but I certainly do! I think I still have the issue of KO magazine with his profile piece! Thanks again Rich - not just for the nostalgia trip, but for recognizing these fighters from the past; they may not have made any all time great lists, but in their own way, they were just as important to the rich (no pun intended) history of the fight game. As are you!

Another gift from Rich to boxing fans and historians. I was surprised to see a 3-rope ring in Stockton for the Hutchings-Drayton bout. I thought that 4-rope rings were mandatory in CA after the Davey Moore tragedy in LA (vs Sugar Ramos) in the 1960's.

Laing was a good fighter when properly trained which was very rarely. He enjoyed the nightlife too much between fights and often fought on short notice without a full training camp. He can always say he beat Duran though.

Nice one Rich. Hutchings was something of an outsider coming from Stockton, CA. A solid, hard-working fighter. The Drayton bout revealed his level as perhaps a lower top-10 contender. I had never seen the Laing knockout, that was a nasty ending. He was in over his head with Hearns, but to be fair 1984-1985 Thomas Hearns was just a remarkable fighter. In Chul Baek is fighter who floats under the radar. A tough, hard-punching Korean junior middleweight who moved up to 168 and won a world title. Hutchings took some real damage in the Hearns and Baek fights. Glad to hear that he sorted himself out after prison. Great work sir.

That's when the quickening begins. The promise of the Holy Spirit begins to connect with our spirit, bringing us new life. I've lived a life similar to Hutchings; I know. God BLESS you Freddie. I loved boxing and Gil Clancy. Listening to him with Ryan and Leonard brings back lots of late Saturday afternoon memories from my youth. But i got tickled when Gil something like, "Hutchings looks very tight. If he gets nailed he could be in trouble." Anyone Hearns nailed when hands were healthy was in trouble......with the possible exception of Marvin Hagler who may have had the best chin in boxing history.
@triplejunction7073Ай бұрын
Hutchings was unlucky to have fought the absolute best version of Thomas Hearns.

ya, he was an assasin until Hagler and even for a fight after Hagler. He was amazing that he could come back from the Ray and Hagler fights the way he did, that would destroy a lot of fighters.

Kirkland Laing could either be brilliant or awful and you never knew which Laing you were going to get, until he stepped into the ring. He had outpointed Roberto Duran in his previous fight and then disappeared for the best part of a year. His manager Mickey Duff said that the phone was ringing with offers for big fights but that he couldn't find Laing. When he resurfaced he took the fight with Hutchings and was badly knocked out.

He was maneged by the amazing late Luciano do Valle, Brazilian biggest sports broadcaster. Hope you be able to do a vídeo about him. @johnniea4684Ай бұрын
Laing's style was all about fighting at range, pulling back from shots. At 147, where he was taller than most, it worked pretty well (though he was always vulnerable to getting nailed). Up at 154 against a taller, quick fighter like Hutchings, it was a disaster.

I wonder if he started doing drugs sooner than what was reported. Sometimes when people get a taste of money, they don't handle it well. I have experience with that. Touching story. Freddie was a hell of a fighter, but not on Hearns' level. Some athletes get lucky enough to be able to dedicate themselves 100% to mastering their craft, while others have to pump gas to make ends meet. Maybe Freddie would have been better under better circumstances. We'll never know.
