Rick and Morty is already needlessly confusing. Like fuck if I wanted to watch weird random Eldrich level shit spontaneously appear throughout a series, I'd watch Regular Show, which is S Tier for a cartoon series that's legit just a couple homies working at a park with other homies. It's the mundane nature of the show's premise being abruptly catapulted into a completely random chaotic event usually involving some kinda supernatural or super Meta type of story shift that is completely jarring to the audience in a way that engages us by tapping into our curiosity, subliminally encouraging us to continue watching it to figure out what the hell is even going on and how it correlates to the original point of the episode. As Regular Show continued throughout its seasons, it kept to that same plot format of "Dudes supposed to be working, ends up goofing off, ends up messing some shit up or doing something they shouldnt have, weird shit happens, conflict, resolve, conclusion, fin", which is a relatively simple yet decent and strong format for a slice of life type of comedy show. It clearly kept fans of the series always tuning in just to see what kinda weird crazy shit was gonna happen next. With Rick and Morty, you have no format. It's just chaotic randomness that makes no sense, then the show trys to nudge you like "EYYY GET IT? LOL BECAUSE WE SAID SO AND THAT'S RELATABLE" and expect you to catch on.

I'd say, "Overwhemingly Pretentious" would be the most appropriate adjective to describe Rick and Morty, not "Complex". To be complex would imply that whatever it is that makes the show complex is what holds it together and makes it function. Rick and Morty is more like Brian Griffin in that one episode where Stewie takes these ADHD pills (Pretty sure its Adderal or Vicodin or something) and Brian takes one and gets all tweaked out and starts up on a typing tangent, thinking hes brainstorming all these super brilliant ideas and super deep concepts for his book, but by the time he comes down and crashea from the high and decided to check out his presumed masterpiece, only to realize in shock that all he wrote was pretty much several pages worth of word salad that made absolutely no sense. I feel like that word salad Brian wrote was probably what would soon become Rick and Morty. Lolololol. After all, the storyline of every epsiode sounds and looks like the mad ramblings of the local neighborhood tweakers standing on the street corner.😂😂😂

@@300thNPC Episodic shows reset nearly everything between episodes. Medical dramas, sitcoms, soap operas, crime dramas, etc work on this. Rick and Morty is a comedy, and runs off this model. Serial plots (this comment calls them linear) have a plot that flows through the entire season, as if it were a movie or book. Game of Thrones, The Expanse, and The Witcher use this model. The Witcher has some episodic elements, but drastic changes happen with characters and their relationships during it. Supernatural has overarching plot elements, but the relationship between Sam and Dean is ultimately unchanging. One dies, and everything stops until they get resurrected, and the all is right with the world. Ned Stark dies, and it irreparably changes the plot of Game of Thrones. It is nearly impossible to have a foot fully on both sides.

I feel like if any character has changed it has to be Morty. He has really gone from a awkward kid dragged along on adventures through a multiverse he knows nothing about and therefor is forced to blindly trust in Rick to a much more independent individual who is capable of making his own decisions and take charge of bad situations instead of first calling on Rick for help ...even if ultimately he screws it up and needs Rick's help anyway. I do agree though with the large amounts of nothing in the show. I don't think I would mind what are the more "filler" episodes as it is still a sitcom and it's first priority is to entertain and make you laugh. My problem with the filler episodes is a subjective one in that to me most of them are just not funny to me. Usually I prefer shows to either be each episode is it's own self contained story that has no effect on the next or be more of a journey where every episode is relevant to the plot. Like Classic Spongebob and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both are good shows but are totally different in how they tell stories. Trying to do both can be a disaster like Steven Universe or amazing like Futurama. Rick and Morty I am not sure where I would place in comparison to those two. I feel like it is more like one or the other by the seasons and not by the show as a whole. I might be talking nonsense since these are basically 2AM shower thoughts but yeah. That's what this video made me think about. I love videos that make me think whether I agree or not. ...or in this case am currently unsure.

Many people always ask me how I was able to get into Harvard as a 16 year old who skipped 3 grades of high school. They think I got in because of my scholarly records, but no the key is the interview. As I sat in the Harvard Dean's office in front of the board of reviewers for my application, the Dean asks me "Why should you be a good candidate for this school?" They seemed bored but I replied "Well I was born a child prodigy, placed 1st in my state spelling bee for three consecutive years, I can speak eight different languages not counting Latin, play four different instruments, I skipped grades 4 through 6, and graduated my high school as valedictorian at the age of 14. I then worked as an intern at both Telsa, and NASA." Suddenly the room burst into laughter and many of board instantly started scribbling down "No" near the application check marks. The Dean says "Sorry but you are just not the type we are looking for." But then I said "Excuse me but I wasn't finished... I watch Rick and Morty" The Dean looked at me like an idiot and said "So....?" Then I replied with a smile "And I understand all the references and subtle jokes" An audible gasp let out by the board was so loud the secretary had to come in. You could hear a pin drop and then suddenly all at once the entire board clicked their pens on the "Approved Box" and I was instantly handed a diploma and now I'm teaching advanced physicals there. I guess you can say I'm pretty smart. :)

Ngl, I kinda have to disagree with this, for the simple fact that it really does change. Over the course of the four seasons, we see how Morty and family members become more capable. They need him less and less, to the point where they start going on adventures entirely on their own. Like in the first episode of season 5, the very first scene is of Morty saving Rick’s life. Even if you argue that this was on,y a gateway for Morty to screw it up by landing on the ocean, you can’t deny that Rick has entirely given up at this point. and later on in the episode, Morty goes on his own adventure on his own and literally makes himself an evil god figure to a species. Beth realised that she doesn’t need Rick and that he is an abuse parent who left her. Jerry is more assertive and learns to become the man of the house. Summer learns that she doesn’t need approval from Rick and can do adventures without him. As a small little thing, you say that when Beth basically says “it’ll be like season 1 but better and not as reliant on you” it makes it so the previous episodes were entirely pointless when it comes to character development. To me, the message of that moment is quite the opposite, it signifies how everything has really changed for the better, and away from Rick. Even besides all that. I don’t think the theme of the show is about nihilism. On the contrary, I think it’s about rejecting nihilism. In the family, Rick is really the only nihilist. He sees the universe as I relevant, and thus doesn’t cares about what happens to it, however, we get to see how his mistakes do have effect on the worlds he inhabits. When he left his original universe with all the bug monsters, we see how he’s not only put his original family in a living hell, but have endangered his current family. not only does Rick and Morty show how what he does does matter, it also shows that him, and his mindset, are the losers. In the end, everyone in the family except Rick have found new identities that are both safer and more fulfilling, while being disconnected from Rick. And Rick is all alone contemplating where it all went wrong. This is the change and depth you say it is missing. To be sure, I don’t disagree with you when you say that it is mainly a bunch of small, funny story lines loosely connected together. However, you ignore or misinterpreted many elements of the show that completely derail your arguments.

There is a lot of one time episodes, so it can can def seem like not a lot really happens between the good stuff.

I would argue that at the time of season 7 all three of these points have gotten deeper, the characters (especially Morty) have faced true fears, such as being replaced. The themes have expanded past nihilism into revenge, purpose, and self contentment. The plot has also expanded with the finite curve, evil Morty, and Rick prime.

Kinda sucks that season 4s finale changed and revealed a lot of stuff while setting up a bunch of new themes, ideas and character conflicts and season 5 didn't do anything with it. Rick being hated by his family didn't change anything significantly, Morty and Summer don't really have such a close bond as they showed off, There isn't any signs from Space Beth or any hint at Rick's new found acknowledgement of him being a shitty father, really feels like Rick and Morty really just goes nowhere.

The show might not be deep with philosophical concepts but it is definitely clever with imaginative concepts, it makes you ponder a little (It is NOT! hard to grasp, or needs some advanced cognitive level to watch as some people like to say). I personally enjoy the show for it's unique sci-fi concepts for example (the Roy the game, the Simulation scammers, the memory parasites, etc. etc.) each episode has a new crazy concept, it reminds me of Doctor who and black mirror in that sense. Also Ricks extreme apathy could be interpreted as the answer to the Nihilism question. You can't tell me that you didn't find any philosophical concepts on the battery episode or the rest and Ricklaxation one. It doesn't give you the answers but it asks them and that's deep enough for what the show is. Ultimately the show is made for wacky adventures, of course it's not deep as The good place but then again you are comparing different things. You wouldn't compare Bojack horseman to Friends. I agree 100% with your conclusions at 19:23 is spot on but then It rubs me wrong when you say that some episodes have 0 value. or not worth watching??! why!? because they didn't explore some philosophical question? Entertainment is the value.

If ur refering to Taxi driver I don't see much similarity between them despite having similar dystopian backgrounds and a loner as the main character. Joker being a deep movie is actually subjective, since it's ending changes things and because of that ending the entire movie can be considered as ur own perspective of looking into it or headcanon each having difference in their deepness.

The thing that bothers me about Rick and Morty being so committed to being episodic is that the show has potential to be so much more. The plot is playing out more now which is great, but it kinda feels like a lot of element of the story aren’t being used to their potential: morty’s original Jerry, the rift that the dinosaurs closed, evil Rick (to an extent), Morty’s character development, etc. Like there are episodes that explore character development, but after one or two episodes, the characters remain pretty much the same.

I think you missed an integral, core part of their characterisation- the fact that you should at the very minimum suspend your disbelief and actually read further into the characters instead of seeing them merely as plot devices. Rick Sanchez himself is a horrible person. He recognizes this, and yet despite that recognition his own ego demands that he continue to be a horrible person. He's built a veritable infinite playground for himself because of this, and he shut himself off from the rest of the multiverse where he *isnt* the smartest man in the universe. Morty is a counterpart. His own lack of self esteem as he ages is only hammered in as the series progresses- until he eventually reaches a tipping point, and begins respecting himself. Both literally in the fact that c-137 morty actually begins demanding and acting with self respect, and metaphorically with the overarching evil morty metaplot. In short, unironically, you missed the point. Sure, Rick is a man who can theoretically do anything- but he's irreparably scarred, and endlessly willing to objectify and ignore his family- until he finally comes to the conclusion that he can't run from his problems anymore, as that's causing him infinitely more grief than attempting to solve them. Morty however is the opposite. He's stifled, incapable of growing and now accutely aware of it. He's been objectified in a infinite number of universes, by an infinite number of ricks; and finally he breaks through the cycles of abuse, and escapes. He finds his solution in running away, for he cannot change while eternally in the shadow of his grandfather. Idk dude, this whole video just screams that you barely paid attention to any of the events that occurred in the show. Like, "Rick Sanchez can do no wrong and Morty is the only one who fucks everything up" is challenged in the show, and Rick fucks up multiple times- like, one of the best episodes in the show was where Rick's body doubles created their own body doubles and accidentally lead into an infinite recursive loop. Meeseeks should never have been given to actual braindead dumbasses like *Jerry* who he knows is braindead because every single incarnation of him is braindead. Like, huh?

Friedrich Nietzsche described nihilism as a disease. He also helped establish the building blocks for existentialism, which is supposed to be a solution to nihilism for those of us that consider the universe to be godless, indifferent, and devoid of inherent meaning. I agree that the show isn't deep enough that it always escapes its sitcom trappings. I don't think the point was ever that Beth was too stupid to do better: it was more like she had big aspirations, life got in the way, etc. She becomes more comfortable with it (like in intergalactic cable, when she sees what her life would be like if she had accomplished her goals) but sort of relapses around the clone thing. I was going to write that it can't really wrap up the whole story in a meaningful way because they don't know where it will end but the video ended as I was typing it and you said that yourself. No I haven't been here since the Nietzsche comment - I came back for an edit and every time an ad plays it screws up my edit and erases everything. (Angry face)

I think a lot of the people who are so vehement that shows like Rick and Morty are deep/complex, are unwilling to accept that they like trashy humour for trashy humour's sake. It's okay to like stuff that's "simple" and "easy to understand". It's also okay to like things that aren't necessarily "polite" and are wholly vulgar. If you're constantly striving for intellectualism in basically everything you do and like, regardless of whether that makes any sense, you're just a straight-up pseudointellectual which is prolly the opposite of what you want anyway. You need to chill. It's fine to just enjoy things for what they are.

when ppl say the show is deep no one is talking ab the humor, it's the message of every episode. yea maybe the plot is silly and the characters are relatively one note but the lesson behind the plot in every episode is there. what i love about the show is that it takes an issue like self actualization and presents in through a lens of evolution in the dinosaur episode. yes the plot is absurd and the jokes don't expect a lot from you but the message still resonates, and exploring those messages in a world i've come to love with characters i love is fun. everyone knows u don't actually have to have a high iq to understand the show but people initially started saying that bc each episode tackles a serious issue (except the sperm one, but even an argument could be made there ab the feminism in summer's b plot) it's just through the lens of stupid comedy bc it's justin roiland. dan then adds substance and derives meaning from the nonsensical humor, which is another thing i love ab the show. dan has always had a way of keeping even the most inane plots grounded with a solid message, that's what got community it's cult following

THANK YOU, totally agree with you here. I think what makes a lot of people feel like it's complex is that the jokes build on backround knowledge. In ofitself you can go deep with topics like nihilism or certain political themes like nazism and racial conflicts and while the show does not, many viewers might feel like it's deeper because they explored the topics themselves and are now excited to see it joked about in a show. I know I was. But Rick and Morty in and ofitself builds on nothing else than references that really aren't too complex but none the less absurd and enetertaining to watch, at least for me :D. But I totally agree with you that it has otherwise bothing that truly makes a show complex. None of the plot or story is and the characters really lack depth in motivation like in shows that are actually complex e.g. Kakegurui. But hey, I see nothing wrong with being proud of oneself for getting jokes thate reference intellectual topics. In the end it does give upportunity to go explore these topics in greater complexity on your own to then joke about it :D. On a persoanl note it really does cover my humor span perfectly, from dumb Sex jokes, to ohilisophicial or political references, so I'm happy to be entertained by it :)

I think you confuse deepness and complexity way too much. Deepness is like the ceiling as to how much you can think about, how much material there is to overthink, as much as I hate that word. Complexity is the floor: how much do you have to think to wrap your head around the story. The best stories tend to be deep but not complex, easily aprochable but endlessly interesting to think about.

I agree for the most part. However, I think it's a little misguided to suggest that Nihilism was never elaborated on. For example: Nihilism is the liberation from predestined purpose. Which should be desired, for destiny, once you remove the notion that one is the protagonist due grandeur, can only be imposed mundanity. I was taught this by a very elegant, 7 word sequence: "What is my purpose?" "You pass butter."

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
