I think a lot of the assumptions about Rick being a boomer who hates modern music just comes from the culture in his comments. If you watch his videos where he takes a look at the top 10 most played spotify tracks, he's actually very fair to a lot of the newer pop music and you can tell he's not going into those wanting to shit on tracks, but if you look in his comments, it's the exact opposite attitude in there.

The comments on those videos are always rancid. It genuinely makes me think what these people want modern music to do. It's a catch 22 - music strays too far from their comfort zone = noise. Music uses basic structures = unoriginal. I get the feeling they want what they like but new, which is basically impossible, lol. And there's things to not like about modern music but the fact that songs are short is not like the downfall of society

@@man4437 People also rarely mention that there is really just as much to dislike about every era's mainstream music and they've just bothered to remember the stuff they like. I never comment but when I see two of the guys who have introduced me to so much awesome music join together for a talk I cannot help but to take the chance to say thank you both! And I think that the apathy of the average listener to seek and enjoy new sounds is a very complex matter: there's first the drive to do it, a hunger mixed with a sense of adventure that leads you to new stuff that is not you or your taste anymore but that it absolutely enhances you as a human being; then those findings you make in your quest for music inspire you, among many other stuff, respect, and it's this respect and obviously the curiosity you have that make you take really seriously this artistic expression that you're experiencing, and to consider carefully the message of the artist. For me it's not about the mediocre songs/artists, or the mere manipulation from music platforms (given that we all have agency in our lives) but about conformity, lack of drive and passion that so much people apparently wallow in. But then I can't not see that I'm judging that from the place of my own passions, which cross through my life and gives it meaning... There seems to be little capacity to leave one's place of comfort, but if there's one thing that I'm sure about is that everyone's passionate about something and it's a little thing that keeps living there, latent, waiting for just the right time to kick in.

Im a DJ and in techno and other forms of dance music a good warm up DJ is key to start your night, set the tone and ease people in but now no one has the attention span to enjoy an opening set of ambient or downtempo music which was a big part of DJ culture. As a 27 year old who truly loves music, I can definitely say the shit I listened to in highschool was nothing compared to the stuff I was listening to when I was 23. As for now it's still completely different than both. I think it's really a power struggle, to know, keep relevant, in a loop of what we truly love. Every person has their own taste and you can't just shove whatever amazing track you know down anybody's throat and I learned that a couple years ago. Getting older now I can see what I used to love fading from me, that's why I bought a guitar and also write. In the position you two are, the influence you have can keep that passion alive as work. I still dedicate myself to new music for hours on end at least 1-3 times a month and I respect others that do as well. But I know one day my 1995 born ass will be old screaming you kids don't know shit about kiss, then play some Kanye right after it. Lol. Cool vid! Also the first cd I ever owned. MBDTF at 14 years old. Use to sit with my ears so close to my computer speakers cause my dad hated rap and when he'd walk by I'd turn it down cause I thought I'd get in trouble. I hid that cd. 34:10 so glad I’m on the same page with both of them with metal production. When I first started mixing, I remember looking up tutorials and literally everyone was using amp sims, fake drums, too much compression, shitty bass tones, etc. the last band I was in didn’t even want me recording my actual drums (despite me owning all the equipment needed) cuz they said they could just program them…And now look, every metal band these days has that same over produced, glossy, fake sound to it. Like yea maybe that style of production worked for with all the shitty 2010 metalcore bands but for the love of god can we please move passed it already.
@sleepyheadbeats43522 жыл бұрын
I’ve been trying to explain this to people for years. It got so bad that the indie band I played in didn’t want to record actual drums because our producer played in metal bands and he could “just program them” Our own drummer was cool with it and I was like wtf?! We are a raw shitty indie band, we don’t want to sound anything close to robotic or over compressed. That’s just the trickle down from years and years of people having to overproduce metal, I can’t imagine how fake the production side of it is now. It’s so dumb.

When I go to bed I usually put on Never for Ever by Kate Bush, Hejira by Joni Mitchell, 1919 by John Cale, Aja by Steely Dan, Deep by Peter Murphy, Mensch-Maschine by Kraftwerk or You don't Know Me by Willie Nelson. But during the day it's mostly Western Swing and Honky Tonk, though sometimes I still play the Pixies, the Breeders or QOTSA. I really need to find some more current music.

I think some of us around the age of 30 are in that sweet spot where we enjoy music like a few decades ago, meaning, listening to an album like watching a movie, to get to know the characters, reading a bit about them, and enjoying the whole experience like we used to when we bought CDs. But then, also being able to access a vast library of music for a really affordable price. I'm sure some younger people will get that experience from their parents or older brothers or something. I hope the next generations don't let the idea of the album die, which is kind of happening in some genres already. Maybe I'm completely wrong and whatever comes after "the album" is even better and cooler; right now it seems like the playlist is challenging that concept, ever changing playlists curated by the platforms themselves to keep them fresh. I think that's cool too, but it doesn't replace the album, it's a different thing.

I have a funny Rick Beato anecdotal story. So back in the late 90s he was in a band called Billionaire. They sounded like a harder version of Janes addiction....nothing special or original but sort of like your run of the mill rock band...they sounded professional enough but nothing to write home about. So sometime in the late 90s im in high school and I went to see Megadeth play and the opener comes on and it's Billionaire who myself or anyone in the crowd has heard of. Usually when a band the size of Megadeth plays the opener will have some kind of following or maybe fit in with the audience but these dudes were all alone. So these guys(Billionaire) with bell bottoms and Les Pauls start playing mediocre harder rock/alternative music in front of a Megadeth crowd....and its in Philly no less and if you know anything about Philly sports crowds you'll know they are some of the harshest in sports. Well that attitude carries over into the music scene for Metal as well there and let me tell you Billionaire got annihilated by the crowd to the point of either Rick or the other guitar player threw his Les Paul to the ground and at one point almost threw it at the crowd. Its funny as I don't remember many opening acts from that long ago but this incident always stuck with me and little did I know decades later I would see one of the dudes from the band be super nice guy on a popular internet platform.

I think the ready access to any type of music from any genre of period also puts a lot of responsibility on the listener to curate their own tastes, which is great but also causes a lot of anxiety. Studies show the more kinds of salsa available in the store means less purchase of salsa overall, for example. In other words, choice overload, as well as sensory overload due to short form online content and video games.

As Gen Z I 100% agree that my peers are often disinterested in music. I know several people who I’ve asked “What music do you listen to?” who’ve responded “I don’t really listen to music.”, and “ I don’t listen to music”, word for word. Those I know who do listen to music are all casual listeners, they listen to playlists without much thought of the artists or groups behind them. One thing I can say is most of the serious musical appreciation among my peers is from Video Games OSTs.

I'm both a music and a videogame nerd. I have emotional experiences with both, all the time. The main way I connect with younger non-music fans today is through games. I believe young people prefer games these days mostly because of the overabundance of shallow music in the mainstream. The quality and artistry of your average mainstream game is way higher than your average mainstream music hit. It's not even comparable. 2018's best selling game was Red Dead Redemption 2. 2018's most streamed artist was fucking Drake. The standards are totally different.
@tomasruckett2 жыл бұрын
I think even the video game landscape is changing though. The most popular games also tend to be a bit shallow. Fortnight, Warzone, Overwatch, etc are of course really well made, but like pop music, they are designed to be addictive and highly consumable without a lot of emotional engagement. Self-proclaimed nerds like yourself are more willing to seek out good music and good games, no matter the age, but I do think the average consumer will take the path of least resistance, missing out on good indie music and indie games.
@gab_gallard2 жыл бұрын
@@tomasruckett I understand that, but I would argue that the amount of "shallowness" in high-profile mainstream gaming doesn't compare to what we have in the music scene. Sure, you have your formulaic shooter or sports game releases every year. However, the audience still hypes and demands high-quality "prestige" games on a regular basis, and these games (and many indies too) do share the top spots of best-selling games with the Fornites and CODs every year. I simply don't see the same variety in the music charts.
@liamsams2 жыл бұрын
@@gab_gallard totally agree with this, even as gaming has changed in the past 5 years, games with true quality like elden ring still rise to the top in one way or another which really can't be said with mainstream pop

If you're someone that likes "musicality" or "musical music" I think it's a valid criticism to say that today's music is somewhat simplistic or dumbed down compared to some older stuff. There are exceptions, sure. But I don't think it's a very hot take. Ricks seems to be embracing more and more music tech too

@@MichaelTurner856 what's "good" or not is subjective. But if you're a MUSICIAN. Someone that is well studied in music and passionate about skill and innovation you're gonna be bored with a lot of today's pop music. Most of them follow the same basic formula. Are there good catchy tracks out there that aren't complicated? Sure. But for people like us (I have similar taste to Rick) there isn't much meat on the bones to a lot of modern music. Not much to chew on. There's definitely innovative modern music out there and Rick speaks highly of those musicians (,Tim Henson, Tosin, Plini, Cory Wong)
@MichaelTurner8562 жыл бұрын
@@elcastro5000 I am a musician and I am passionate about music I also have a similar taste to Rick as a lover of all types of rock music. I am very passionate about innovation in all aspects of music, not that I don't like complex things believe me I do especially as a songwriter and in producing so we don't differ that much. Maybe you have to look to find something you personally like which is fine but there's so many good songs being made and admittedly not all of them are on the charts. Once I looked for them that rabbit hole of good modern music kept coming to my attention and it was a "Pop Awakening" per say. Sorry if I'm slightly incoherent writing this (I just got home from a surgery on my shoulder) my point is I don't think that things being simple takes away from my enjoyment of complex things and vise versa. One of the best things about music for me is how people can use the same chords for thousands of years and write so many different but equally great songs. Not saying all pop songs on the charts are great but some of them definitely are. I'll send you some songs tomorrow if you remind me and we can have a cool exchange if you want!

On the question of why people lose interest in contemporary music from their 30s onwards, I am 35 and struggling with this personally right now. My theory is that it's a mix of the obvious things like: less time available to listen to music which means less exposure to new music trends which makes it HARDER to develop that taste and appreciate that music. But for me, one of my biggest issues right now is listening to music performed by people who seem very young compared to me and respecting these young artists the way I respected artists who were older than me when I was young, or contemporaries of mine. I find it hard to take heavy lyrics seriously from an 18 year old, and I can't fail to recognise the numerous young female Sheryl Crow impersonators practically regurgitating pop/folk songs from the late 1990s. I feel like the change in my perspective, caused by age, is a huge obstacle for me now. I really want to get past it but it's tough.
