They did, the head coach said something along the lines of they weren't thinking about Giannis' record when they instinctively did the usual rookie ritual, (that has been done for many years) and said they'd have been fine with the spare ball (when he thought they had the actual game ball). The Pacers gave Giannis the ball they took for the rookie, so I'm guessing the rookie didn't got anything for his first official NBA point. In order to vilify the Pacers, most people are assuming the coach was lying, but that's not the way the Pacers run their organization. And that coach has pulled players or had their players dribble the ball out before they could set franchise records out of respect to other teams in the past. People that don't watch Pacers games wouldn't know that. It's sad that they're trashing the team over this mistake, and based on peoples' assumptions of their intentions rather than facts.

No I don’t think they were being petty at all. Like they said, their rookie Oscar scored his 1st official basket in the NBA and so they took the ball for him. Once they had realized Giannis was kicking and screaming about it they handed over the official game ball to him and took the 2nd game ball for their rookie. Like he just explained in the video.. them taking the 2nd game ball and giving Giannis the official game ball wasn’t a big deal to them & I’m sure if Giannis brought this up to them on the court as the Pacer’s assistant coach was taking the ball they would have gave it to him right there and then.. regardless as soon as the cry baby Giannis started with his hissy fit the game ball was given to him. All the theatrics from the Bucks were unnecessary and uncalled for. The Pacers never once denied him or told Giannis “no”.

Giannis always scores a lot of points against the Pacers. It's not that hard for him to get 50 or more points when they give him 32 free throw attempts in a single game. Plus, he's a VERY talented, huge bodied player that can railroad most opponents (bully ball)....he's going to score his points against most players in the league. The Pacers have 3 titles (had a dynasty) on 5 trips to the Finals during the ABA years (when professional basketball consisted of 2 smaller groups - ABA and NBA...until they merged taking 4 of the ABA teams). NBA championships that happened while the ABA league existed are counted, so the ABA championships are just as legitimate as those early NBA championships are. Several Hall of Famers came from the ABA. league teams that joined the NBA. The Pacers are not title-less, and technically have one more professional basketball league championship than the Bucks.
