He was the DJ at the restaurant-Bar 'Chesterfield' I worked in the early 70's. We all knew 'Rick Dees' in the morning, he looked like this!

Wow cool to hear Rick Dees airchecks before he peaked in the 1980's and 1990's on KIIS-FM Los Angeles.

I was doing a morning drive radio show in "smallville" Alabama in 1973. Rick Dees was killing it for WSGN in Birmingham with "Rick Dees in the morning". I drove into Birmingham on a sick day off with air-check in hand to apply for a position open at the station that had Dees and his cast of characters, the hottest station in town, at the time. Waiting in the hallway for the program director who would "be with me in a moment", I watched Rick doing his magic in the studio. In fact, he was up and down the hall grabbing papers, yelling out to engineers and producers like a circus director. It was amazing. I was floored with the amount of talent that I watched this man use in a 5 minute period that blew me away. He was going from talking to someone standing behind him to on the air calling up characters and jokes like a mad man. Damn he was so smooth. So smooth in fact, that what radio talent I thought I had was gone, just like that. He made me feel like the amateur that I was compared to the talent and mind of THE Rick Dees. He made me feel like the news announcer in Good Morning Vietnam When the program director came around to greet me, I was feeling about an inch tall with my talent, so when he said hello how can I help you, I said oh nothing today, I just dropped by to see the studio and Rick Dees on the air. I never bothered to hand over my aircheck. Thank God Rick found his calling, on to the big time and thank God I got out of radio and found a job that I had real talent for...

Air checked his transition from KHJ to KIIS. He is a favorite of mine. I only have 1 aircheck of him at WHBQ from 1970. This is great stuff. Thanks!

I grew up in West Memphis from 1969 to 1980, and loved listening to Rick on my AM radio hanging from my bed post, every morning. I could swear I remember him announcing Elvis' death on the 16th of August 1977, but I can't find it on KZbin.

Yep, I remember that. It was the following morning….Dee’s didn’t break the news but I remember him talking about it. It was the show as usual. What a crazy time in history.

@@10uhcplz1 Thanks for the clarification. It's been a while (!) I remember the show being billed as "Rick Dees and his cast of idiots "!

@@58fins That’s it. It was the start of my sophomore year n high school. May have even been the first day of school that year. It was announced in mid afternoon that he’d passed. Me and my brother was outside riding bikes in the West Tennessee heat ….my mother came out and told us, she was crying. “Elvis is dead!!!” I remember being on the bus the next morning and hearing The Dee’s Show. It was different.

I don’t believe it. My favorite wrestling commentator Jerry the King Lawler is on this video. This is awesome. I’m not from Memphis Tennessee but he is one of my favorites.
