I started at age 67 one year ago. Recovery time is the biggest challenge for me, followed by the total destruction of my ego. Still, I occasionally tap out some young buck which feels great. I agree with Rick - you are never too old.

😄👍my hat off to you. My mentality is little bit different, I try not to tap any of the partners out, and to control is my purpose. I usually go about 80-85% of my capacity (to avoid injury). Being tapped out and learn from the mistakes are major processes for progress. My goal is not for a physical black belt but a solid black belt knowledge. I am a white belt.

Great video, as a much older guy, I wish dojo’s and academy’s would reach out to more senior people. Started Judo at 58, BJJ AT 59. Now brown belt at Judo, and blue at BJJ, it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. Now 64, and my goal is black belt in both. I’m a long haul truck driver, 2400 miles a week, if I can do this anyone can.

Starting Judo at 58 is very impressive. I started BJJ at 60, now 63 and a 3 stripe Blue Belt. Trained Judo for several yrs, 79'- 92'. Hats Off to you !!!

Really enjoyed this. As a short girl who is just starting out on my jiu jitsu journey the perspectives that you have shared are really great. I haven't reached the age that you had starting BJJ but I feel that I need to build skill deeply to be effective compared to those around me.

I started BJJ two years ago at the age of 62 and I fall in love with the art / science. BJJ has been a major part of my life now.

I started 3 months ago at 59….LOVE IT ! I’m going 3-4 days a week, but work gets in the way. I’m retiring in 2 1/2 years and hope to go maybe 5-6 days a week….not hard rolling every days, but I just really enjoy it. We are retiring in Mexico, so I’ll need to find s new school there.

Words of wisdom! At 60 my purple belt may not materialize for now and will remain at blue. Unfortunately, my training will end next week. Canada now requires vx passports in gyms. Enjoyed the journey!

Hi Rick I realized we have a lot in common, from the background to getting bored quickly and trying many things, to be ocd. very cool interview

I thought I would be friends but RIck already says he hates me. That's ok, I think we'll still be friends. I really enjoyed this conversation and I look forward to meeting RIck :-)

I din't knew BJJ had demos before starting watching Roy Dean and Rick Ellis. I find it super cool and makes the transition of belt more serious. more preparation is required

I just started this year and I’m 53. I understand the concept of feeling like you’re always starting late LOL

I didn't start till 58, but I had wrestled in H.S. The only advantage that gave me was I had a pretty good idea how bad it was going to suk the first time I rolled...and the other beginner white belts had no clue what they were in for.

You were a late starter? I’m 54 and a 2 stripe white lol. I hope to keep at it for a long time.

Rick, do today’s new students have an advantage or a disadvantage due to all the content and resources available now days? Live rolling and technical at my academy are great and I’m learning a ton from the professors, but I enjoy soaking up more videos/content online. As a white belt, I don’t know of this is harming or helping my progress. I continue to better my base skills, but I’m also throwing in new things or just exploring different moves or techniques.
