Nearing the one-hour mark and I have to say, I'm very surprised to hear Rick argue so vehemently that it's an audience's connection to a character that makes their response to a given situation funny. Rick is the king of impromptu sketch comedy, routinely reaching deep into his bag for whatever prop or alliterative gimmick might sell a scene. He's his own example, really, of how little an audience needs to know of a character to recognize the humor within a given situation. Sure, watching one hundred episodes of a series will certainly contextualize the humor. Especially as we become so used to a character's patterns and behaviors that a writer can then subvert our expectations in ways that are especially funny, but ultimately (speaking as a viewer) I find that it's really only my emotional response to characters over time that deepens. The humor is simply the introduction. It's how I first learn that character's beats (in terms of their comedic timing) and how they get a rise out of each other character. This is what makes comedy so wonderful in the first place is that so much can be read from a single reaction. It's my feeling that you really come to learn more about a person through their sense of humor than through any other means, not to mention the speed in which a human connection is made. Just look at Monty Python and all the characters and scenarios they invented, almost none of which rely on any information beyond what's right there on the screen. Erik is just absolutely correct here... What most people find funny about The Office, when you boil it all down, is its steady supply of awkward or outrageous reactions from simply people co-existing in an absurd environment. It's no coincidence that the show changed its cast of characters entirely from the British to the American version and still remained wildly successful. IJS

Ricky is right on some cases but never seeing the office and only seeing clips, it’s funny seeing them without much context. There are those shows that you can jump in at any time at any season and still enjoy it but usually the first season is slower than other seasons and when I try to get friends on shows, I have to show them clips because they get bored with the first two episodes and are not interested anymore

Erik - re your phone: your correct, the disciple your thinking of is called Reliability Engineering - during the R&D phase every single 'fail' is assessed and a risk grade put against it. The most dangerous risks are obviously designed out. However, functionality is not a danger so depending on what the strategy of the company is...some failures are acceptable and in fact good as the failure will be engineered to last outside warranty - there is statistical probability put into this - and you will most likely repurchase the same brand.

End of pod comedy argument : Rick: "as long as you know him it's funny" Erik: "you don't need to know him for funny" Erik meant literally know him as in knowing the character, the context of relationships, his history etc. Rick meant metaphorically know him as in know someone like him in your own life. Done.

Rick is right. When the viewer already has a built in connection with your characters the jokes land harder, and you can appreciate the moment much greater. It also makes it much easier to keep a sustainable level of quality going forward for your show because that investment is already there. You don't have to work as hard to keep our attention. Whereas with Erik's side it's fleeting. You are incredibly reliant on top notch writing keeping the audiences interest in a show whose characters, stories, or world they do not care about. _____ staring at the camera after _____ does something, and us laughing because we can relate that? Momentary. Jim staring at the camera after Dwight does something, and us laughing because we can relate to that, AND we know everything about Jim, everything about Dwight, and everything else about that Office and the world building to that point? That's everything. It's the difference between a show that has one or two funny episodes and is cancelled after the first season, and a show that's on it's 6th season and is a cultural phenomenon. Or to put it in Comedy terms, an act doing a single joke out of context, and an act doing an entire Stand Up routine.
@harleybqrazy3 жыл бұрын
Way to break it down. ;)
@youwhoknowknewnot28763 жыл бұрын
Like Erik said its a debate of time. They both technically right. How are gonna connect, first you give it a chance so you start to get invested without really knowing the characters. Once you do build a connection from now being more exposed to the show, you now are even more invested in the characters. Simple!
