The art of karate is a method for each Karateka (participant) to develop their own artistic and personal impression upon the art and draw from its virtues. No martial art style is better than another, as we are all sharing in its virtues. Our goal is to broaden your horizons, help to develop the inner spirit within our students in order that they may fully express themselves through the art of karate and develop life tools to carry over into all aspects of ones life, in order to live a more purposeful life.
Our goal is never to say that what you have been previously taught is wrong; on the contrary, embrace your teachings, expand upon them and develop an understanding and artful expression of yourself through the wonderful art of karate.
The metaphors for karate are endless. For some it is a type of medicine for physical and mental focus in life, studies, business, work, family and other relationships. For others it is an artful expression of passion that brings out the creative side in order to have a more meaningful life and purpose expressed through martial arts. No matter what your purpose is, martial arts is to be enjoyed and shared by all. Respect others and their style, for they too are sharing in this common thread.
We at West Wind Karate hope that our expression inspires you as we share our passion and love for the art and all around us.
West Wind Karate Dojo established in Florida in 1976, and today is the Florida representative of the Nihon Shotokan Karate-do Federation. Our dojo is the functional arm of the Traditional Martial Arts of Sarasota Inc. - a non-profit organization designed to perpetuate the study of Karate as a cultural experience. Our chief instructor, Rick Hotton - Godan (5th degree black belt), has been guiding our dojo for the last 35 years, training for over 40 years. Rick Hotton has been nicknamed "The Technician".
As a traditional dojo, the holistic cultivation of the student takes precedence over the achievement of solely physical skills. The physical nature of Karate-do is the method or vehicle to achieve self-awareness, discipline and strength of character. The training therefore becomes a set of attainments associated with mental discipline. It involves poise and skilled movements. These reflect a frame of mind, a philosophy of life and a mode of communication. Although physically expressive on dynamic and precise movement, Karate training mentally cultivates a sense of inner peace and compassion. This mental and physical union present a balance in which the student's potential as an individual can be brought to fruition.

Even though I've never heard of Rick Hotton, it's obvious that he knows his stuff, has good technique and has a nice relaxed way of instructing as he tries to get the best out of students. I've now spotted that he's a member of the Tamon Sensei's NSKF, which explains a lot. Having trained with Pemba Sensei in Japan, I found him technically excellent, a very good teacher AND a very decent person. He's also a lot of fun to be around after class.

I love how so much of his teachings center around demonstrating and articulating the bodily sensations of performing the techniques. it makes it very graspable.

Excellent videos. I like the way Sensei Hotton breaks techniques down, but also describes how they 'feel'. That helps in understanding the body mechanics.

I have lamentable karate skills lain dormant for over 40 years, but that simple statement in terms of an attacking action “deliver, don’t push” is the most insightful I’ve ever heard!

Can anyone provide me with a link to Sensei Hotton doing a complete kata start to finish? I'm not a Shotokan stylist but I've had exposure to it and think that his karate exemplifies the power and crispness of Shotokan. Yet in any video all I see him doing are breakdowns of kata or technique, enough to easily see how extraordinary his karate is, but I'd love to see the whole thing.

Awesome stuff by very talented martial artist, just wonder how much better it would be with a more narrow stance? Kind of like a boxers stance.
@TheRogueSquid
@TheRogueSquid 3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t be kicking like that in boxers stance, also karate sits upright above the hips with straight back and chin up, I imagine without the stance you would lose the mobility and get clipped. Even the combos differ significantly. But, I’m just a dude, try it out you might find great success with that modification!

@@louisviola9763 I boxed a little a long time ago, so I understand what you mean. But I meant his body position is different to a boxing stance. The whole essence is different. the weight for one, but it could be combined I'm sure.
