I heard an interview with Bernie Leadon and Chris Hillman where Bernie noted how Rick Nelson was picking up the country/folk sounds at the beginning....with Randy Meisner znd Tom Brumley of Buck Owens band on pedal steel to boot!....And I just love "Easy to Be Free!"

I just turned 68. When I was a little girl I had the biggest crush on him ... along with a million others girls of all ages...he was in a TV show, Ozzie and Harriet and they were his parents. He also had a brother, David. I think. It was a sitcom based on the real life people. But not their real lives. I can still remember sitting in our TV room, black and white, color wasn't on the market yet, and on the shows where he sang were the best. His manner of death for everyone on that plane was horrendous.

So why are the Eagles given all the credit for starting Southern California Rock? The evidence is here with Rick Nelson and the band including future Eagles member Randy Meisner who took this experience with him to the Eagles. The fickle public and smart ass critics would let Rick Nelson out of the "Ricky Cage" that's why. Rick wrote a lot of these songs! The harmonies are all there. Yet Rick Nelson got into the Rook and Roll Hall Fame BEFORE the Eagles did.
