How to be a competent designer, according to Rick Owens 1. LEARN HOW TO MAKE CLOTHES. "Learn how to make clothes. Learn how to make clothes. Don't do sketches and collages 'cause that's bullshit. I mean, anybody can do that. You have to learn how to MAKE. CLOTHES." 2. YOU HAVE TO SHUT UP AND WORK, AND WORK, AND WORK... "... all the time, and produce and produce and produce, and the more you produce, your character, or your talent, will emerge. For better or for worse, your identity, your personality, your vision, whatever... As long as you work, and work, and work and make enough things to choose from, you'll be able to have an edit; You'll be able to edit something that becomes who you are. It's so simple! I mean you don't have to like, go to parties, you don't have to meet the right people, you know? You just have to, like, work, and work, and work and get your stuff out there." 3. GO "OUT THERE", SHOW IT TO PEOPLE, ", you can't expect people to come knocking on your door; you have to show it. But, you know, kissing somebody's ass isn't gonna really help that much, I mean, unless it's good! ... Your main thing is just to get your work out there and then get a lot of it done, so that you can pick the very best, and that's not as easy as it sounds... "

I'm amazed. I respect and appreciate that Rick designs at his own pace, only shows clothing in his runway shows that he sells & sticks to his aesthetic. I was not expecting to hear him be so honest about how he got started & his opinions about designing and certain aspects about the design world. I love that.

Rick Owens reminds me so much of the ecclectic hippies I grew up around in Northen California. The laid back outlook, & the belief that everything will work itself out as it should. Much respect to you Rick Owens, you have given me a new appreciation for the fashion industry. I can't afford the clothes, but I love layering & could pretty much take inspiration from his shows, shop my closet, & revamp my current look over & over.

you can tell the difference between a real master at his craft and a modern day imposter immediately when they start talking about their work. So many clear insights. Nowadays, these new "designers" just want the lifestyle and not the work. When they talk, you hear it in their voice that they dont even know what they are talking about. The rick aesthetics aint for me but respect.

All rick is, is a normal ass dude trying to make minimalistic clothes. Yeah I don't buy them either retail is way too expensive and these brands value cheap leather and fur from like horses lol so why not buy replica. Never really cared for fashion besides looking good myself. But once I found Rick Owens, I liked that subtle "gangsta" feeling his designs. His shoes atleast. They are like you can use them for just daily flashy commuting and they seem to be useful and aesthetically pleasing in a combat situation aswell. I call it a "modern ninja" style.

Rick is a remarkable person and a huge inspiration to me. I hope to get rich one day selling clothes whose mark-up is 504 times the actual manufacturing and marketing costs. Selling over-priced clothes to the wealthy would give me a sense of deep wonder and astonishment. I would be worried though that one day someone might see through the charade of nonsense and dribble I spout.

Once, when Picasso asked for a hefty sum from a woman after having taken a mere 10 minutes to sketch her in the streets of Paris, he was confronted with a similar remark; "how can you charge so much for something that only took you 10 minutes to make...", she said. Picasso, without missing a beat, responded "Madam, completing this very drawing took me my entire life". Price is what you pay for the history of an output - not for materials. Likewise, I'm happy to exchange a Pollock or DeKooning with MoMA for the "fair" material exchange of some paper and paint. I doubt they would accept. For that matter, I doubt you would, either. Feel free to HATE RO or whichever artist you want - but, let's stop pretending that art is ever reduced just to materials. There is, afterall, a language that has been built - and a unique language, whether you like it or not is besides the point. So is reducing aesthetics down to reproducibility.
@CHIEFS_DYNASTY_7 жыл бұрын
Rick Gardiner yeah and theres a reason you look like shit. you dont know anything about what youre talking about and even if you did, what youre saying doesnt apply to the whole of fashion, little buddy. good try though. by your logic, all art should be worth only the price of the canvas and paint.
@HOWL4myMOON6 жыл бұрын
Roberto Toscano wow perfectly articulated point. I’ve struggled to express this idea in the past often times explaining the difference between commodity clothing and high fashion as the physical translation of storytelling, with each designer using his or her respective medium to tell that story. The key is the development of a unique language. What you’re paying for is the time spent to develop that design language. I snapshotted your comment tho. Awesome stuff brutha
