Bringing Down The Band

Күн бұрын

Rick Rubin sat down with legendary Outkast member Andre 3000, and the two talked for an hour about life, creation and more. In this segment, Andre and Rick talk about Andre's current struggles with creation.
Listen to full podcast: brokenrecordpo...
About The Podcast: For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world. Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers. Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by the producer Rick Rubin, the writer Malcolm Gladwell, and the former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

I’m 19 - I’ve been seriously into rap since I heard Kendricks “DAMN” album and at some point I came across OutKast and 3stacks later solo work and when I heard his music it opened me up just like Kendrick did. So when Andre said he doesn’t know his place and all that, I just wanted to say that above all you’ll always be respected as a hip hop legend and you changed the way I thought and had an influence. You took your power and spread it across the planet in masses and you’ll forever be a spoke in the wheel of our culture, and I say that as a white kid from Canada so when I say culture I mean humanities culture but overall Andre you were/still are a good musician and you made hits and changed the world. Your work is done but don’t lose confidence because all your fans are here with you and your style always stayed dope, don’t worry so much!

Its refreshing that he is a real creative artist. If he was just trying to get the bag he could put out garbage and get paid. The greats all have this mentality like Andre has. Hes not satisfied with mediocre. He basically says similar things as Eminem says far as every word or bar he utters gets criticized and put under the microscope.

Bloop i don’t think it would be basic or watered down at all. I think he’d be more worried that his topics wouldn’t be received well. Honestly if he hooked up with Royce he’d be able to navigate that very well bc he had the same transitional critiques after he got sober and he came out on top.

As an artist who has stopped making art this is so helpful to listen to. I really appreciate getting to hear such a human side to someone who would otherwise appear to just be a flawless artist, who I would have presumed was constantly creating. I made music for 10 years and then just lost my way with it, fully relate to everything he saying about being bored by his own melodies, and The analogy about his mum coming into the room and disrupting the creative world he can be lost in. It definitely feels hard once you've disconnected to then reconnect. Also, it can feel like there is just so much music out there, and like someone saying below how do you make an impact or even really catch peoples attention in a world where there is new music coming out every five minutes and everyone's attention spans are not much longer than that. Anyway, thank you so much for this interview. And will hope to hear new things from Andre whenever he's good and ready for things to flow again. Xx

Very insightful for me. I have always enjoyed Andres music in a way that made me feel it is alright to be different in a time when society has overwhelming expectations for me when I was a kid. To hear him being so humble, transparent and self aware is a very satisfying experience, and I wish him the best luck. Not that my opinion matters but if I could tell him anything in relation to this podcast, it would be to enjoy making music for hisself , he has nothing to prove. We would be lucky to hear it

As a songwriter, you want to create something of quality, and so you put yourself into a state of mind that is logical and deliberate. The problem is that, by doing this, you've put yourself in a mental environment where spontaneity and creativity are stifled. We try so hard to be "good" that we take ourselves away from the magic of what allows us to be great.

Really enjoyed this 3 part message..I believe Andre needs new experiences in his life, join forces with other writers/producers to create new music. When you live life as a loner, you begin to lose your creative flow because we weren't really created by God to live a life of solitude. Reason Jesus had 12 disciples. He could have easily did what he did alone, but He knew the power of connection, support and relationships. He's going to have to break out of that box of introversion which is most times nothing but fear, in order to tap into his flow again. Also, it could also mean that he needs to redirect his talents/gifts for awhile and use them in a different way. Maybe instead of being a sole artist he could be apart of a group or even go behind the scenes to write/produce for others. There is a season for everything as the Bible says and maybe this season calls for something new. He would have to seek God on that for direction...

That's crazy that he doesn't feel confident. The few guest verses we've gotten from him like on Anderson .Paak's "Come Home" or The "Solo" reprise on Frank Ocean's Blond have been INCREDIBLE! It's like he's saving all the talent up for microbursts of mindblowing genius. But it doesn't matter how good you are, impostor syndrome can effect us all because the better we get, the better we get at recognizing great work and our ability to see/hear/understand it always matures faster than our ability to do it. It's a classic problem of creative people.

Naw.. Andre has a distinct position as top 5 dead or alive to a lot of people in my generation (28-35). That's pressure! Then to be the lyricist that he is and his quote on being judgemental of his own music, he's also a perfectionist... and introverted (shy). I get it. It's better to be percieved as mysterious than normal (lame). Hes nervous he wont fit with the popular culture of today (where he stands). If he ever dropped a project, it'd probably be monumental, but the energy it would consume from him and the chance he'd be taking, he dont even feel like going there (imo)

Today's music for the most part is lackluster. He's probably not feeling very inspired by what he sees right now. Andre is an observer.

I love how human open channels of music who were not raised properly and to know God, sit like idiots wondering why whatever is happening to them is happening. You are gifted by God!!! You are of God. It sucks no one has any basics theological power understandings.

I feel like most musicians who want to release music suffer from this including myself. For me, every piece of music needs to feel special, the problem is I think it’s the people who consume the music that dictate how special something is. Our jobs is just release the damn thing!

He probably just doesn’t want to blemish his discography, idlewild is the only dud out the batch. Andre probably just figured he didn’t wanna risk out putting 2 bad albums out. On Rosa parks he said “ ‘It's weak’ is the last quote
That I wanna hear when I'm goin' down”
