Here's a topic for discussion regarding LIV vs PGA: What makes LIV less engaging is that it is more of a demonstration than a true contest. The great thing about watching the Honda Classic last weekend was seeing a 30 something year old rookie grinding against a proved winner to try and earn his first win. I would love to hear you two chew on that aspect of what I think is the damning difference that will eventually sink LIV.
@williamnichols7812 Жыл бұрын
I read a book many years ago by three teaching pros on "How to Break 90". Two things stuck in my mind. First recommendation was to quit trying to break 80. Second was more severe from a strategy standpoint. Recommendation was to pick your favorite club and distance to hit into the green and try to reach the green in one under par. The harder part was to use the strategy to get there. On a 530 par five, assuming your best club to the green was 110 yd PW. Your goal was that to be your fourth shot. You then subtract that distance from 530 and get 420. You then hit 3 140 yard eight irons shots to get to your target. It does work when you play by yourelf. I will let you guess what your buddies comments are when you pull out your 8 iron on the tee of a par 5.
@lawrencebogar6136 Жыл бұрын
I may have read the same books. I, however, would have played 2 150 yard 7 Irons, to 300 yards, a 120 yard PW to 420 and a Gap wedge 110 yards to the green. Remember, the card doesn't ask how, just how many.

You'll never get any better if you're scared to use specific clubs! What's the point in breaking 90 if you can't hit anything above a 7 iron
@chrisearle7886 Жыл бұрын
It’s a great strategy for breaking 100 and perhaps for breaking 90 on certain holes that you can’t reach with comfortable clubs. It just depends on your game. If I can hit a 220 yard drive with confidence and then 145 and 145 leaving myself just 20 yards from the hole, even 30 yards… I’m taking that all day long because I have an easy chip onto the green for a possible up and down.

Echoing what Guy said. I really started to play golf only four years ago and I did exactly what he said. I've watched and rewatched so many golf videos by you guys and other KZbinrs. It has helped me so much in how I approach the game. I listened, got lessons, continually practice, and took your advice about different lies or how to play a hole. I went in four years to easily shooting 110 or even to 120 and broke 90 last year. I have simply fallen in love with the game, and now can't get enough of it.

That's great to hear. The traditional swing is very difficult to execute with consistent precision, so kudos to you for working hard and improving your handicap. I took a slightly different route, and switched to a single plane swing about 8 months into my golfing career. Went from shooting in the 100-110 range before the switch, to shooting in the low 80's about 10 months later. To be fair, I spent a lot of time and money developing that skill so this don't take this as me bragging about my rapid progress, but rather as a testimonial for the single plane swing. I chalk up my rapid progress to the simplicity of the technique, rather than any special personal attributes - anyone could do what I did.

I'm now 68 years old, over my golfing life I've won 12 Provincial Championships (in Atlantic Canada) and played to low digit Index all my life. The secret of my success is Short Game. Getting up and down is key to scoring. It also helps to keep the ball in play off the tee. The last five years I've played exclusively with Hickory Golf Clubs and despite the shorter length off the tee, I won three of those Provincial Championships against players using modern clubs. Again keep it in play and get up and down is the secret. Simple. Haha And have fun, don't take it too seriously. Cheers from New Brunswick Canada

I think Guy really hit on the crux of the issue with LIV at this stage. Whether it’s the team format or the individual lineup, LIV doesn’t have a true through line that holds everything together. Maybe down the line once it develops its own history and following, but right now it’s just the off brand tour that doesn’t match the quality of the name brand PGA tour.

I happened to be in Mexico and did take the opportunity to go to the Sunday LIV Golf game. My initial thought is that LIV is a golf show as apposed to a golf tournament. Lots of activity and loud music. Their signage says Golf only louder. Very different and interesting to see how it will all pan out.
@zerofactor7871 Жыл бұрын
I would tend to agree. I will draw a hard line that it is indeed a legitimate golf tournament, but agree entirely with the idea that is also very much a show. The strong emphasis on the entertainment value of their product is what's driving their growth at the moment. The younger generations are very into Netflix, KZbin and such and good entertainment is a hot commodity these days. LIV is simply adapting golf to the social trends of the younger generations, and I would wager that this will work out well for them. The PGA is already adapting to compete with them, which is the strongest sign that they're onto something good.

The problem with having interest in LIV is other than money, there's nothing to play for and you get 120k for last anyway. If you win on the PGA Tour, it's a big deal. Now you qualify to play in the Majors and gain tons of points toward the Ryder Cup or President's Cup. Plus the PGA Tour has a legacy. Maybe LIV can get that someday but I don't think the LIV Tour will last long.

Team sports are derived from professional teams or franchises representing cities. If LIV would take this aspect of their respective team competitions to the city level. As in have the Australian team representing Melbourne. Add in a particular golf course as their respective "home" course. I think this could potentially inject some drama and pride. Because at the end of the day fans of any team in a team sport generally, not all, root for their local team. In some cases favorite teams are passed down from family members because that's who you grow up watching. This model was similarly done on the PGA Tour with the Tavistock Cup tournament. Expanding that idea to LIV and hosting the tournaments at each club so you have that "home team" type atmosphere. Similar to the Ryder Cup. You could have the English Team out of Wentworth or the Belfry. In my own personal opinion this could potentially do very well with tv viewers. Consider a team out of say Pebble Beach or Michael Jordans club Grove XXIII. It would be a whole lot easier to get into and behind a team representing a particular golf course than it would be to get behind "The Range Goats"

There are weeks on the PGA tour that just don’t peak any interest. All the shit-stirring aside I just don’t find LIV interesting. It’s no secret there are world class players on LIV who are fun to watch. I just can’t stay engaged watching an event. The hype will build as we move closer to majors. Will be interesting to see where everyone falls in line. Curious to see if the laid back style of LiV will have these guys ready to go when the majors come around. I would argue it will be a big turning point for their brand depending on how they perform.

Let’s get a few things into perspective. Most things in life are about taste and variety and we all have different things we like - and golf is no exception. Many people like LIV and yes most of us understand they are not playing for titles or history, they are playing for money, hence the word professionals comes to mind. By the way the PGA guys are also doing the same thing week after week, but they play a format that has been in place for many years, LIV has their own format which is new and enjoyable to watch, for many people. If I get up at 4am in the morning to watch these great golfers play off a shot gun start and get to see many of them play so I see nothing to complain about and what is so wrong with watching a different format of golf who by the way some of which the PGA is now copying. Even Tiger and Rory are going to try a different format of golf as well. If you don’t like LIV golf, then don’t watch it, it really is that simple and at the end of the day it’s sport and entertainment, we’re not curing cancer here.

My view on LIV is that it'll never succeed on the level of the PGA Tour or European Tour in the eyes of the fans, because their events just don't have any prestige or weight, other than them being big pay-days. I couldn't care less about it. LIV may develop that prestige but its going to take 10-20 years at least before that happens, and I'm not sure if it'll stick around that long if it continues like it is. There is a lot of pressure coming home in the last group and I love that. For instance, take the 2022 PGA golf championship when Justin Thompson came back from behind and waited for that last group to bring it home. There is drama and it's great tv.

I was actually at the LIV golf tournament this weekend in Mexico and the golf wasn’t bad and being there the teams part of it became interesting the more I paid attention. Part of that was the fact my wife is Mexican and she was cheering for the Fireballs since Abraham Ancer was on the team. Then I noticed all the players were all from Spanish speaking countries. If teams could develop some kind of common tie like that it could develop more of a following. Maybe all the players coming from the same university?? On a negative note, by the time I made it to the merchandise shop, nearly all the team gear was gone and there were no golf shirts available. How is that even possible with the smaller crowds in Mexico?? Plus the food on the course was bad and expensive. Not sure if that falls on LIV or not but that needs to be fixed in Mexico.

Rick Shiels is obviously toeing the party line with his criticism of LIV golf being "meaningless" tournaments, players only doing it for the money and not caring about the silverware, etc, etc... This EXACT SAME criticism can be applied to the PGA tour. Seriously, who gives a flying fuck who won the Honda Classic last week at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida? The US PGA have held 18 tournaments so far this season and they have another 30 remaining... Aside from the majors, does ANYONE really care who wins these? Golf (like tennis) has always been largely about money with most sports fans basically ignoring the week-to-week results and only paying attention to the Majors (or the Grand Slams in tennis)

Rick, I agree with your premise that PGAT would take the first guy back. Makes complete sense based on the optics. At the same time, I think maybe they won't. As this then sets a precedent and incentivizes guys to jump to LIV for a year. Collect a huge paycheck, then head back to the PGAT. Granted, maybe you're right that they'd have to give all the money back. Or maybe the LIV is even more restrictive that they can't leave. Which would be hilariously ironic. But if there's.a way for guys to go LIV, come away with a nice chunk of change, and then come back, I don't think the PGAT will open that can of worms. @@pushtostart1377 not sure how that matters. Being a top collegiate player doesn't guarantee professional success. And no one (at least currently) is making a name for themselves via playing on LIV.

Going off of Guy's comment about new golfers finding this channel extremely early on in their golf journey; I actually discovered Tommy Fleetwood through this channel. I had never actually played a round of golf when I started watching your videos on practicing chipping and putting so Rick's channel was probably my first exposure to the world of golf passed knowing who Tiger is and hearing about a few of the different Majors

My son is a leftie and luckily I grew up not far from Silvermere so I have found the excuse to line up some clubs for him ! It is a bit of a challenge but worth looking at E-bay too as well for second hand ones while they learn

Lads, Great chat...well done. I have say that I disagree about LIV golf in that I think they have a very ordinary collection of players. How many are really any great loss to the US pga Tour? Cam Smith and Dustin Johnson. I dont miss Patrick Reed, Bryson the long driver..... When was Charles Howell III ever a big name competing at the top of the leaderbaord? As for Lee Westwood.. He's been a Ryder Cup stalwart but hes past it now and also Poulter has been finsished for 5 years. I doubt the PGA would take back any players even Cam Smith because it would give others the hope that they could try Liv and come back..... Keep up the good work. The break 75's are great...

Politics aside and the whole Saudi situation around LIV, how do you compete against virtually a bye-weekend for PGA tour where no top players played and loaded LIV gets virtually no views? If they want young pop to watch, put it back on YT and not behind a paywall of CW of all networks

The Iona and Rick at Crail has been the best Break 75 episode in my view. From the course to the level of play to the foundations of Golf in the Kingdom, that episode had my entire attention from start to finish. I am enjoying the Break 70, 75 and 80 addition to the series this year. Kudos to you all, Rick and Guy, and James for the great start there.

Thanks. Nice round. Lot of good putts, until the last one. You picked a difficult set of irons, there. I'm interested to see how that turns out!

Interesting times in the Golf world. I am more disconnected to Pro Golf than ever. No one really cares or remembers who wins anything else than the 4 majors. I would love to see 4 rounds of 14 holes played over 2 days eg Sat and Sunday. Golf needs to be 14 holes and should be able to played in 2hrs - then we have a new exciting fast moving sport - 120mins / 14 holes = 8.5 mins per hole. Its time to get this sport moving. Could also make it mixed pairs, what about limiting the number of clubs eg 7 clubs. Just some thoughts.

I tried watching the liv broadcast. The team aspect felt like it was something extra that you got to follow, so I actually didn't mind it. The thing that made me change the channel was all the distracting music in the background. Not the broadcast music, but the music at the actual tournament. It was so casual that it didn't seem like it anything actually mattered or that the players cared. Also, it didn't help that all their "stars" didn't do anything.

For me the best part of the PGA your is that someone can come from nowhere and win and change their life forever. There are a lot of great events week to week and of course some will be duds. The Players is as good as any major and the playoffs have been fantastic for several years. I don’t watch LIV and never will for many reasons. Loved the break 75 at Isleworth thanks for the great content guys!

The thing with the PGA Tour is the fact that there are so many minitours out there developing talent to play the big tour. If the PGA Tour recognized this fact and did more to help these players it would be a game changer for their pool of talent. Another thing that can be done would be to co-sanction an event with the LPGA Tour. Put the ladies at shorter tees equal to the percentage less the women hit the ball to on average. Meaning if the women average 250 off the tee and then men average 260 move the ladies up 10 yards. Same greens, same conditions, same pins, and most importantly same money. Would love to see Nelly Korda going up against Jon Rahm or whomever players.

No matter what there are only so many places available at the top. Check out the Andy Ogletree story. LIV Golf probably saved his career and propelled him forward. I'm for competition. I like all the tours even though I can't watch full rounds of the PGA without getting premium subscription channels. I think LIV is forcing the PGA to open up golf to the masses of golf fans.

@Robert Brown exactly! Well said. And a majority of the LIV players are past their respective prime anyway. Has Phil Mickelson sniffed a lead yet? Not that I've heard, but I don't follow LIV. Phil was my guy until he left the PGA Tour.

LIV golf is a three day exhibition league made to look like a traveling circus. I honestly feel bad for the former professional athletes who have sealed their fates forever by joining in. Crushers, fireballs, Aces…these are names you hear at boys and girls club basketball tournaments or in rec league softball. The product is lack luster, the sports washing of Saudi Arabian human rights abuses is unforgivable, and the lack of a cut plus the promise of guaranteed money makes for a 3 day event with no drama whatsoever. To each their own though. If something about it appeals to any of you, then good on you mate 👍🏻.

The thing about the LIV teams is they don't have a tie to a city or location. For example, most Liverpool fans are from Liverpool. The original fans of a team are usually geographically tied to the team.

As an 18 handicapper I can go around my local par 70 6800 yards and fire in 3 or 4 birdies on a good day but I’ll still be lucky to shoot 85 because of all the doubles and maybe an odd triple

The thing with LIV is that it's not designed for golf fans. I think most people like us (people that are so interested in golf that they are sitting around watching a golf podcast on Tuesday afternoons) don't need all the flair and gimmicks to watch golf. LIV seems to be designed to try and reach people that aren't golf fans and bring them in as new golf fans. The problem is, in today's world of unlimited content options, I just don't know if there are that many people out there for LIV to find and bring in
@nicholastaylor9375 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the scratch vs higher handicap thing, I also read this week that according to data collected by Arccos a scratch golfer will average 31 putts per round, while a 15 handicapper averages 35 putts per round. That's a way smaller difference than I expected.

Guys, it's simple... the Ryder cup is not the sport it's the country representation and that is instant rivalry and history. Golf ain't a team sport without an element of country of origin attached to the teams!!! LIV IS DONE BOYS!!! ✌️🤟😉🤙👍😄

I agree with Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner's statement concerning LIV Golf..., “LIV’s drawbacks can’t immediately be remedied, because they’re part of the upstart league’s DNA. There are no stakes, no consequences, no substantive storylines. There is no upward mobility, no context to a player's performance, no career milestones to achieve. It’s a closed shop: the same 48 players in 13 stroke-play tournaments, all of equal importance, competing for nothing but pride and a boatload of cash, devoid of any meaning or significance.”

Regarding golf on TV, and what I like to watch. I prefer watching top fields on historic courses. Rather than middling fields on resort courses. I don't think I'm much different from most in that regard. The past few weeks on PGA held exceptional fields in Phoenix and at Riveria. And the golf and competition were compelling until the final putt dropped. When the PGA plays outside of the continental US with average fields it tends to be less compelling for me to watch, not to mention the number of commercials and "Playing Through" breaks. Garbage commercial Television. Ive found the Team aspect to be quite compelling. I'm not cheering for one team over the other yet, but I do have preferences. Last year's final team tournament was some of the best Golf on TV since Tiger won the 2019 Masters. Having all players playing at the same time is far more compelling than Thurs and Friday on the PGA Tour. I get to see my favorite players play regardless of where they are on the leaderboard. Lastly, the LIV commentary tend to drone on and get a bit childish.. probably because they are on for 5 hours straight without commercial breaks

You make double when you: Shoot at a front pin Chip close but leave the ball above the hole Miss the fairway from the tee Leave putts short Going for par 5s in two or trying to drive a par 4 and instead of leaving yourself with a 100y wedge on a flat lie you are hitting from grass or sand with ball above or below your feet

LPGA is awesome to watch. Young rookie from Thailand hitting a flop shot off the 18th green for eagle. Heaps of story lines for different players and great golf. I enjoy Champions Tour with Langer winning again at his age. Then of course DP World and the PGA. I have enough to watch without LIV. I just miss watching Louis O and Cam Smith.

For me it’s really simple… LIV has no history behind their tournaments so each event just feels like a friendly knock around with the pals and there’s no real competitive edge because everyone is gonna get paid the big bucks regardless. I want to see top pros playing for the prestigious Players Championship at the iconic TPC Sawgrass or the Arnold Palmer invitational at Bay Hill etc, fighting for the win or even just to make the cut
