I'm only eight minutes in, and what's coming over is the humble gratitude that Rick has for the hand that life is dealing to him. Of course, he's worked hard and made bold decisions to get here (the interview he did with Nick Faldo about his career to date on Faldo's KZbin channel tells a lot about how hard Rick's worked), but the genuine appreciation and recognition that life has been kind along the way really comes over. Hat doffed to the man. A well deserved 2.5m subscribers too.

I grew up in Aiken, SC, which is about 25 minutes from Augusta. Here's the deal with the Masters. It has changed a good bit in recent years, but way back when (before TV and Arnold Palmer really helped expand golf to the masses) getting tickets wasn't hard. And once you had tickets, you had them for life and you could pass them down to one family member after your death. So TONS of people in the 40s, 60s, and 60s got tickets and passed them to the next generation. So, growing up (in the 80s and 90s), it was odd to meet people who had NOT been to the Masters. My family never directly had them, but I probably have been 15ish times from 1992-2018. So, yes, there are a LOT of folks you see in the crowd who have been many times and not necessarily because they have their own tickets. But as far as I know, when you get tickets through the lottery (each year), that's it. You'd have to re-enter the lottery the following year as well. The term "Arnie's Army" really began there at Augusta in the late 50s. Fort Gordon is an Army base in Augusta, GA. Back in the 50s they would give away loads of tickets to the soldiers there. Because Palmer was THE star in golf in the late 50s/early 60s, these huge hoards of army guys would follow Palmer. That was one of the first times when you'd hear the term "Arnie's Army" (1959, I believe) because you'd have these big crowds of guys in Army fatigues following Palmer. Happy for you, Rick. Congrats on a great week!
@pandaman1869 Жыл бұрын
You’re right. I am still benefitting from my grandparents life long master tickets. But yes as of now, the lottery is a one year deal only. Which is sad in one sense but great in another. I wish people of less clsss like myself could go and experience the masters if they wanted. It’s Unlike anything

You did a fantastic job on this video, Rick. I was fortunate (lucky) to have been invited to play Augusta National in 2011 and the best part, I got to play with my dad. So many of your experiences were the same as mine. I thought I was listening to my own stories! Especially the caddie handing you driver on #10 and heading down the fairway to better spot the landings of our shots. I made 1 birdie that day, a 30 footer on #7 to a back left pin en route to an 81. There are a million things that I will never forget from that day, but one thing that stuck with me was the sound of well struck iron shots. They produce a violent compression sound that fizzes and echoes off the pines. I stir with emotion every time I look through my photo booklet or think back to that day. Thank you for such a perfect and authentic retelling of what this experience is like.

Rick, I am over-the-moon thrilled for you that you were able to play at AN! I wanted to quickly share with you about my family and the Masters. I was born and reared in South Carolina, and am the son of a dentist who loved and played golf since he was a child (in Oklahoma where he grew up). We were members of a beautiful country club in South Carolina, the front nine holes of which, were laid out by legendary architect Donald Ross. Anyway, my dad put his name on the waiting list to get Masters badges ("tickets") in 1972, and in 1989 his name came up. As a result, my family has been blessed to be able to enjoy the honor and privilege of going to the tournament since 1989. That said, I have never played there, but would LOVE to! So happy for you, and super glad you got to, buddy!
