Terrific human. Years ago when my girlfriend's conformist sister mentioned Rick Steve's guide books, at a glance they looked pretty conventional, so I dismissed them. His KZbin videos convinced me that he has a great attitude. When I travel if I see a tour bus I make sure I consider if I'm where I really want to be. At 5 am every major tourist spot in the world at any time of the year has zero tourists. So I always get up and walk around. When I first visited Lijiang in Yunnan in 2000 there were only a handful of Western tourists. I stood out, local people said I looked wealthy. When I went back in 2009, I was just another grubby backpacker. And there were large TV screens in the main square of the old town... but early in the morning? It was Lijiang as it was a hundred years ago. Buy local, hire local, pay well, tip well, thank people, always apologize for being so much touble. (In China 'Ma fan ni li' gets you a lot of grace.) And stay in touch. I like it when a taxi driver hits me up a year later for a few bucks.

I just turned 13, and I’m going on a trip with some of my school grade in the summer of 2026 to the alps in Switzerland, the Cinque Terre in Italy, Monaco, the French Riviera, and Spain, all in 10 days. Back in COVID, I was in third grade, and my family used to watch Mr. Steve’s shows on the “best of” whatever it was, being Asia, Scandinavia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, everywhere, at lunch. That “Hi, I’m Rick Steves, back with the best of Europe,” is so nostalgic for me. Rick’s face to me is very familiar, strangely familiar, friendly, like I know him. His voice is soft, and perfectly recognizable, and yet, he looks like no one I know. I love his shows, and I will always remember the times I sat, watching them with my family. It’s also amazing to find out he’s a person of the faith, like me, and when he mentioned Christianity-related topics in his shows in places like Italy, France, England, and Spain, I would always wonder if he believed, I just couldn’t tell. 28:30 Right here, he says that the flip-side of fear is understanding. I agree. To love is to understand, and, as Christianity says, the opposite of fear is love. As he’s admittedly gotten older, in 2025 now, he has become very wise, and kind of reminds me of Harrison Ford. Save travels everyone :), and God bless. ❤😊

I never skip a Rick Steves interview. He’s easy to dismiss as the PBS dad/grandpa character, but he’s such a fascinating personality (his longtime legal cannabis advocacy, charity work, self described workaholism, faith, etc.). This might be one of the toughest interviews I’ve heard him do because he really seems to be grappling with the current state of travel - Instagram, climate change, overtourism, etc. While he isn’t an instigator of bad tourist behavior, you can tell he feels a bit of responsibility. Despite his moments of somberness, you can tell he is still enchanted by travel and the moments and perspectives it breeds when done well. I always appreciate his words as I consider my relationship to travel…and to life in general.

My doc is confident that this new, even more accurate radiation treatment, will nip the cancer once again. At age 78 now, I am just grateful that modern tech has enabled me to keep going, pain free, and feeling well...they key to this type of cancer, is to make sure you have a PSA test, every 3 to 6 months...stay on top of it, and you will live a good, lengthy life! In Madrid in 1971 with my first husband -- he liked what I had told him in Mexico City, to ask the taxi driver where HE gets a bite to eat (and insisted we rent a car to DRIVE from Mexico City to Acapulco!) -- so he asks the taxi driver in the evening where the common folk (one could still use those terms then) experience genuine, traditional flamenco dance. He took us to a place I'll never forget -- it was neither a theater nor a bar. It was a room. It had an unfinished wooden floor, and several raised unfinished wooden mini "stages." There were mismatched chairs all around, but they kind of left the floor and stages to themselves. I had no idea where beer and wine was coming from; somewhere behind us. The entire time we were there, different people got up from the chairs and started to dance. Sometimes the same guitarist played the music, sometimes another one took over. Some women wore a traditional skirt with ruffles at the bottom, and some weren't. They all looked ordinary until they assumed the pose -- the pose of a dancer! Their feet stomped the ground, their arms and hands flew overhead, or sensuous wrapped around one side to their backs. They stampeded and they spun and sometimes two became like one person, and sometimes they weren't even from the same county! And before you knew it, they were sitting down and somebody else took their place. Sometimes just a man, but what a physique! What a powerful performance! Then maybe only a woman, whose dance brought you to tears! Then a couple again. Some hopped onto the mini stages and some stayed on the floor. It looked like nothing was planned. It didn't even seem like they had rehearsed, though they probably did. There wasn't much applause, if any! I felt as though we had inadvertently staggered into something from the past, where flamenco was born and just done, and this was the way it was done! We stayed much longer than we had planned to. This was no show put on for tourists -- this was how these people lived! Luckily the Spaniards ate late, so we could still find dinner. I am so glad we saw this, I review it often to keep it alive in my head!

My daughter was a nanny in Puerto Rico from America. She and her Puerto Rican date went to the Hotels near the ocean to dance. She had long blonde hair and he was a tall and dark. They knew all the Spanish dances well. A couple of tourists approached them and told them watching them dance throughout the evening was the highlight of their cruise. Cultures are beautiful! That young man married my daughter and gave me four beautiful grandkids. They richly have two cultures together.

“You travel with the window down” 🤩 Traveling with Rick Steves in his travel videos carried me through the lockdown in 2020-2021. He is truly a travel teacher.❤ I pray to Jesus for your complete healing.

Rick Steves reinforces my belief that the most "human" people on Earth are those who have, or who do travel. "Travelling broadens the mind" has never been demonstrated as well as he does, in these days of rushing, blindness to "the others", or plain ignorance! Thanks to modern technology - and the Internet in particular - one doesn't need to physically travel to get to know the world. I don't have the means to travel as much as I'd like, and watching Rick's videos is such a consolation! His comments are always intelligent, well-documented, written with actual feelings and respect for "the locals"! I just love him as much as I detest the "dumb tourists" who'd be well advised to watch his videos before setting off to places they're unable to understand and appreciate!

This was so engaging I didn’t want it to end. Lulu, you are an absolute joy to listen to. Such intelligent and probing questions, yet so respectful of your subject. I have watched Rick on PBS for decades and I adore this man. Blessings to you both and wishing Rick a complete and speedy recovery.

Godspeed Rick Steves. You are my travel guru and love your support for Barbara Mikulski's Bread for the World! March on! Because of you, at 75, I'm off to Greenland and Iceland in the early Summer, solo! [as a co-expert on incontinence here in the Poconos....] You inspired my bro and his wife to circum-hike and climb Anapurna II (your beloved Nepal) on their honeymoon--they even shared guiardia! You have done good things for us! DON'T MISS A BEAT!!!!!!

Rick Steves is such a high quality human being and that shines through in every book and video he makes. His show on PBS instilled curiosity and later love for travel starting when I was i kid. He is part of the fabric of my life. I wish him only the best and extend my profound gratitude. His assessment of the arrogant American tourist is spot on.

Rick Steves, in this interview, helps me to understand why I travel, and why I travel the way I do. And why I call it travel, and not a vacation. This was an extraordinary interview.

From my young years this guy visited my living rooms. Now I’m an old man and a traveler with his lessons in the background when I visit new places and people. Thanks, Rick.

Thank you, Rick Steves for teaching me, through your books, how to be a traveler and not a tourist. We had five young children back then. We used your books for the five years we were stationed in Germany, for each country we visited. We stayed in the coolest, out of the way places, that showed us the people and their culture. I would have the kids learn basic language skills for each country we visited. They are all grown now, and I believe we are all richer for these experiences. Btw, we went to Cinque Terra in 2001 and 2002. It was beautiful and unforgettable!! My books were dog eared, highlighted and underlined! My travel philosophy came from your books! Thank you!

In 2000, my husband and I traveled to Italy for the first time, solely using your book. At that time, there were no cell phones (phone booths), no texting (we faxed for reservations), only internet cafes, and no GPS. It has been unbelievable to see the changes in travel over the last 24 years! Thank you for being instrumental in helping us develop our love of travel. Because of you, we have been able to help many other people with their travels. We are still traveling today at age 70 and 73, and loving it. In fact, in 2014, we bought our own little house in Tuscany, and spend 5 months out of the year there. By the way, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 years ago, and had his prostate removed. He is doing great. So, hang in there, and keep traveling!! 😊
