I love these beautiful restored films. Thank you so much for posting this. To all the people who commented about people being happier back then, please get real. There was terrible poverty and a bad health situation. If you had the bad luck of being a little different due to a disability or physical abnormality the bullying was relentless. Also there was discrimination and racism and alcoholism. Families with a lot of children lived in very small houses without plumbing. Women had little to non freedom and were often forced to stay in abusive mariages. I love to see these beautiful films but please stop with the nostalgia. A few years after this was filmed Europe was in a terrible war and the worst genocide ever. I am really happy those “good old days” are over.

Beautiful! I wonder why they didn't rebuild the pier right ahead of the Kurhaus entrance, just as it was originally designed? But this stunning Scheveningen footage sadly reveals the many other changes "progress" got wrong. Thank you for the video and the great work!
@Rick88888888 Жыл бұрын
Good question! To be honest, I don't think the new Pier would have looked nice smack in front of the Kuhrhaus: Too pompous, too large, too high (especially the tower), too many islands and more recently too ugly. They should have simply rebuilt a Pier in the style of the old one. But, hey in the sixties and seventies nobody seems to have wanted to preserve the old "grandeur" look. In stead it is a big mish mash of modern (crap) architecture and now most people are sorry about this (too late!).

@limosalimosa Жыл бұрын
@Rick88888888 Жыл бұрын

Thank you for this video/film. I’m not sure if you created it but it’s very well done. Made me smile to see so much happiness. The life and times has been captured in a way that I almost felt I was there. The person taking the original films new what he was doing, creating a time capsule! The clothes the buildings, cars, bicycles, food and drink. Very sad people decided to rune it all in later decades. This area is what I would have wanted to see on a visit there. I will watch this again and again instead. I’m also sure I’ll watch the other videos you’ve shared. Thank you 😊

Beautiful, I’m 58 years old, which meant I grew up in my youth in 70’s & 80’s. I look at the people in this video and I am simply amazed at the impeccable fashion worn by the men and women from that era. Beautiful, unlike today’s fashion scene, what is worn is just ridiculous and disgusting.. Thank you for defining the meaning of what a gentleman & woman means…. Would have loved to been born in the early part of 20th century

Life looks civilised. People neatly dressed. Clean streets. No plastic rubbish. All people now ghosts. Haunting.
@qqleq Жыл бұрын
True. But there was plenty of poverty, uncivilised (and uneducated) people and filth too in those days, don’t be mistaken. Just not in these images, since people would dress up to go out in these times.

About two blocks behind this boulevard it was utter misery. Slums with illness, terrible housing and poor widows of fishermen who passed at sea. Scheveningen being next to the residence of government made it a Kutort for the upper classes of The Hague and beyond, but that's only a tiny faction of the populace.

Stunning! The care people took with their appearance really strikes me. I noticed more joy and pleasure in company, on the promenade and in the cafes, more appreciation of leisure and recreation, a more carefree attitude in general. It's quite moving to watch footage from the period between the wars. Thank you for this video. Really liked your choice of music too.

What a wonderful and ghostly experience, thank you for these moments of past experience and we know that nothing is ever perfect but there are these moments when we know how things went very wrong, all in retrospect and you know that we cannot live there. Most interesting and again, thank you!

They look so much more conscious and free, not messed up by their dopamine system yet. How they all stare with great awe into the camera, not one person looking anxious. Life seems much simpler back then, honestly im ashamed of what it has come too. These days we are all taken advantage of, completely consumed in things that really don't matter. To me they look innocent and to me this film proves the good in humans. Praise god not all worldly things.
