*From today onwards all comments that deal with complaints about today's Paris society related to migration, race, multiculturalism, diversity will simply be deleted* . Regarding these issues everything has already been said thousands of times. Enough is enough. This channel is about *history* , not a valve to spew dissatisfaction about what Paris and France have become in 2023. Please comment about what Paris was really like in the 1920s. E.g. you could talk about the Clochards, the old Metro, the Can Can, Lido, Folies Bergère, Moulin Rouge, Pigalle, Champs Elisees, Eiffeltower, Expo's, the artists near Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, Early traffic and cars, Working horses, Seine cruises, Paris's magnificent buildings, Beautiful parks, Paris Fashion in the 1920s, French chansons, The social climate, Cozy old French cafés, Stories from your (grand)parents, Events of historic significance etc. etc. etc. So please show that you are following this channel in order to better understand and enjoy history! Understanding history also enables society not to make the same mistakes over and over again. Thank you very much!

I couldn't relate to them when the film was black-and-white. But in color, I do. In black-and-white they looked like they lived a very long, long time ago, but with color they look like the era of my grandparents, although the clip is decades and decades older. I don't know if others feel the same way? In the past the black-and-white reels of this time did not interest me much. But now I love watching this and feel that they were human just like me. One thing that is certain is that our lives are very short. I would like to be here a 100 years from now to see what people think of us now. And a person 100 years from now reading this, I was talking about you. Thank you for bringing color to these old clips.

Thank you so much! It's beautiful. When I view those type of archives I search my grand-grand mother (born in 1880's) and my grand mother (born in 1910). They was lived in Paris. When I was a child, they was steel alive and I was living with them. I was sneaking in my grand-grand mother closet where was preserved her hats, gloves and dress from her youth and different items like powder compacts and it was giving me a glimpse in the beginning of the century. I will never forget a set of shoes covered of grey silk with the long gloves, a hat with ostrich feathers and the smell of the powder.

During the decade of the 1920's, Paris was the absolute CENTER of the artistic world. This is Paris when it SIZZLED! I would give up one of my kidneys to spend just one month back then. I would give blood to be able to remain longer. This is the Paris of Hemingway, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Monet, Renoir, Picasso, Dalí, Jean Paul Sartre, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf, Man Ray, TS Eliot, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Luis Buñuel, Coco Chanel, Isadora Duncan, James Joyce while he was writing "Ulysses" and so MANY more brilliant artístes whose names I cannot recall right now. Try to imagine in just one day the music you would hear being composed and sung, the art and fashions you would see being painted, sculpted, written, designed and worn, the intellectual and political discussions you would have over dinner. The Late night jazz and dancing in a small club on the Montparnasse. Every single day and night. If you found yourself lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then you will always have Paris, for it is a movable feast-Hemingway. When the decade was over, I know I would have gone to Spain in the 30's and joined the International Brigade with Papa. I would have driven an ambulance like he and John Dos Passos. I think they allowed women to do this. No matter, I have lived in Paris of the 1920's and I am thoroughly Bohemian and egalitarian now, so I will drive the ambulance and I will fight.

Paris has always had an enormous attraction on foreign visitors. Please enjoy these historic scenes and by all means share your thoughts about this period in history, nearly an century ago! By the way, the footage about the poor clochards is from around 1910. To be honest I am surprised how good the result has become after applying my 5-stage process and also processing the original more than once by the AI (you have to really know what you are doing...). Compare it to the B&W original: archive.org/details/CHMHUB09Europe19294 *Just to give a warning that race and immigration related comments will no longer be tolerated on this channel* . Such comments will be instantly deleted. Enough is enough. This is a historic channel and 99% of Western Europe was simply 'white' a century ago. Full stop, Period!

Never forget this was after the most horrible war Europe had experienced in the last centuries, the First World War, 1914-1918. In every French place, even the smallest villages, one can find a statue with all the names of the young man that died during this nightmare. So the people were recovering of that blow, unaware of what was yet to come. Probably they thought it would all develop for the better from then on, as we in Europe also did in the 90's.

It's hard not to speculate on what was going through the heads of the adults, with the Great War less than 10 years in the past, and if any of them sensed the gathering storm on the horizon. I wonder if those boys would return to France in 15 years, this time in uniform, and if they survived.

Whenever I see lovely film footage like this of happier, more uncomplicated times, I always think of myself fitting into it as someone of privilege and wealth. The truth is that I'd almost certainly have been one of the downtrodden who appeared in some of the street scenes, and without a doubt, although life looks less romantic all around these days, it's a better time in which to live, for most ordinary people. Imagine, some of those men who are down and out will have been men who had fought and survived WW1.

HATS: Of course most people wore hats then. Hats served many useful purposes. 1. Kept your head warm 2. Hide bald spots. 3. Used for holding on your chest in times of memorials, funerals or national anthem. 4. For waving about joyously above your head, adding to the spectacle of a ship or train departing or arriving. 5. For tipping slightly to greet someone walking past you, or coming into a room 6. Hitting someone over the head with your hat if you are angry at them. 7. Catching spiders. 8. Showing off the latest fashion. 9. Displaying social status - peak cap (poor) bowler (middle class) top hat (upper class) 10. Getting someone's attention. 11.A donation receptacle upside down while busking. A part of history that is noticeable in vintage films.

The plane is a Heinkel HE 12, D-1717. I found a photo telling me : The HE 12 (not He 12, the E is for monoplane) was built to be catapulted off the liner Bremen to speed up the translantic snail mail. D-1717 was christened New York by the city's mayor upon its triumphal first arrival there on 22 July 1929, although it had been launched a mere 110 km (68 miles) out. It is seen here arriving in Amsterdam a record five days after the ship left New York in June 1930, as reported by Dutch newspapers carrying the same photo. There are many links to this plane.

I'm sure it was better. Strangely food tends to get worse the more modernized (cost of labor) a society becomes... I've seen street food in places like Thailand/Cambodia that would be hard to get at the best restaurants... made from scratch, multiple hours of prep, fresh local ingredients. There's a reason there's Michelin stars on noodle stands over there. All we get from footrucks here is frozen carbs and government cheese lol

people wore hats because it was cold much of the time, or it was summer and hats helped shield from the sun. It wasn't some grand scheme by people of the 1920's to dress "fashionably," as so many people seem to imagine. It was cold in winter in badly constructed, drafty houses, and it was hot in summer, in houses that had no AC.

In George Orwell's memoirs, 'Down And Out In Paris And London', he describes his time, circa 1928-29 working as a destitute "plongeur" (dishwasher) in a Paris hotel restaurant. Orwell mentioned that if one of these places actually had a native Frenchman as a waiter, it was considered a status symbol for the establishment.

You really can notice the difference in fashion in women between rich and poor. Poorer women were wearing fashion from the 1900-1910s.
