When I was in high school, my favorite band at the time was Van Halen. A new kid moved to our area, we became good friends and he told me that, if I liked Van Halen, I would love Metallica. I was ordering my 12 albums on tape from Columbia House and I saw Master of Puppets on there. So I ordered it. I saved that one for last. When the music started, my jaw dropped and I was in awe of every single song on the album. That was the day Metallica became my favorite band. 👍🏼

Never realized how fizzy the guitars sounded on their own . They work in the mix one of the best rhythm metal tones ever put to tape . Cliff transcribed the guitar harmonies for them . Kirk said that they could’ve done it trial and error and it take a day or take it to Cliff and he could tell them in a few minutes what to play . Cliff’s contributions cannot be overstated .

So I grew up in a house with no music other than Jim Reeves, Dean Martin, Roy Orbison and Frank Sinatra. Nothing else was allowed. We didn't listen to the radio in the car either. This song is and always was a masterpiece. So many elements of classical composition among being a tough ass tune. A lot of Metallica fans are salty because people arrived to this tune through a popular TV show instead of through the usual music/metal rite of passage. As I understand, Metallica themselves shut down a hardcore fan denouncing the association with the show in a thread on one of the socials. Let's enjoy seeing the bands we love get put back into circulation, regardless of how they get back up there. Besides...has there ever been a scene more metal than Eddie shredding Puppets on a B.C. Rich Warlock atop a beat up house trailer in an alternate dimension with red lightning cracking in the background and demon bats on the way to attack? Bet B.C. Rich sells a lot of Warlocks this year.

The part where you're talking about Cliff playing the driving bass line without muddying up the individual notes from the guitars is something that I think is really important. So often I hear bass players parroting the notes the guitar players are playing, and I think it works sometimes, but most of the time I want to hear the bass also reinforcing it's connection to the drums. If the bass is always chasing the guitar line it's sort of leaving the drums hanging to my ear. This is the perfect example of the bass connecting to both the guitars and drums and using the entire space in a good way without simply parroting one or the other. He's staying with the beat and throwing a note to the guitars when necessary to help beef up their end. It must have been a real pleasure to jam with him.

I would be interested to hear your take on the song Orion from the Puppets album. I've always thought Orion was a musical masterpiece that is so good it didn't require lyrics to engage the listener. In fact, lyrics would have detracted from the music, and hidden some of the greatness behind James' voice. Orion never gets old to me, and I've been amazed from the 1st time I heard it to the 1000th time I've heard it. With Master of Puppets, Battery, Orion, Sanitarium, and Damage Inc., there has never been a better metal album. (Ride the Lightning, Justice, and the Black album are not far off however)

Orion is one of my faves. I can hear a little classical influence there. My fave album of theres has always been ...And Justice for All. Something about that album...its so tight and was the closest Metallica got to prog metal territory.

Ahh I knew this song had to get the Beato treatment on this series at some point! This is arguably their most important and iconic song indeed! Great video as always!

@Shockheadd45Enter Sandman is an overplayed, sellout pop metal, borderline hard rock 'hit' written by a metal band which at the time was clearly going for success on the radio. Its a gateway song for people who have never listened to metal before and it has nothing on this masterpiece or some of their other stuff from their heyday, not musically, not energetically, and certainly not in terms of depth and dynamics. *they mixed that with groove, nuance and melody* ---> Like those aren't already present in Master Of Puppets. Enter Sandman released on any prior album wouldn't have made a dent, Puppets is a timeless thrash / heavy metal classic. *which is exactly how Metallica started* ----> Enter Sandman doesn't sound anything like what they sounded like when they 'started', please go and get your ears checked.

I was 16 when this came out, and what is crazy to me, and what I love about this channel, is that what sounded to me like 4 guys just playing like insane people with no rules, was in in fact a complex, well thought out/technical master class of music.
