Yes, surprised Black Sabbath's first album wasn't listed - although, based on Rick's criteria, I can understand. Their first ablum was more blues rock, wasn't until their second album that they became true rock legends. Absolutely amazing tracks on the first album, but much blusier. I wouldn't list Bad Company here - great albums, great bands, but really didn't have the legs of most of the other bands listed (with the exception of Temple of the Dog which only had the 1 album). I also don't see Bad Co as defining, as they were very much the Deep Purplesque band. I can also understand Deep Purple not listed here as their first album was quite filled with a ton of hits, with the exception of Hush. And yes, the Southern Rock bands were completely left out - Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynrd, etc. All missing (not sure if its because they are "hardcore" blockers.

Yes, but do they stand amongst the pantheon that is the 60s and 70s rock God's? In my opinion, no, because they borrowed so much from the bands that are in the top 10. Which is dangerous rhetoric, because "well Zeppelin ripped off black music" so on and so forth. What I'm saying is, if the strokes deserve to be in it, then so does almost every band from the 60s and 70s, eventually pushing the strokes out. So.... I agree that it's a great record, even though at the time of its release I would have called it watered down radio rock. I didn't take to bands like the strokes until much later when actual radio rock became absolute garbage. Queens of the stone age come to mind for similar reasons.

We were sitting on the floor-- no chairs on the ballroom floor, just feet and butts -- right in front, first "row", between Page and Plant. Facelift should have been there instead of Bleach, Tool's first album also kicks ass
@lluewhyn4 жыл бұрын
Agree with Facelift over Bleach, but not as fond of Opiate/Undertow. I listen to them, and I think "This sounds all right, but their stuff from Aenima onward is much more interesting".
@challism4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Had Nevermind been Nirvana's debut, however... Bleach wasn't worthy of this list.
@nutsandgum4 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is probably the most glaring omission. Bleach is alright but also kind of forgettable.. Facelift on the other hand is amazing tracks almost all the way through it.
@stockton224 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Bleach surprised me, it was more like a rough beginning than a great debut. I was doing a college radio show when it came out and there were only one or two songs from it I liked enough to play.
@ReplayValueMusic4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I feel Bleach, while a great album to 90s grunge/alt rock lovers, doesn't really fit the criteria of what Rick set. Not really any hits/or important tracks for them, not very transformative, Nevermind was really what influenced others when it came out, and althought I like most of the songs, I'd argue there are some filler tracks and no huge songs. Facelift on the other hand had AIC's biggest song Man In The Box while being I believe the first big "grunge" single to be on MTV paving the way for the other groups. Became a very influential album for the Alt Rock/borderline Metal genre. The dark content was very transformative and evolved even further in later releases. And although not as filled with mainstream hits as Dirt, songs like Man In The Box, We Die Young, Love Hate Love, It Ain't Like That, and Bleed The Freak, have stood the test of time for AIC while having decent popularity. I love both albums but my heart is with Facelift here

R.E.M. was imho the greatest alternative band of the 80s, and their influence can be heard in the alt and grunge of the 90s. "Murmur," their first album, is a solid album that Rolling Stone magazine ranks at #18 in its Top 100 Debut Albums of All Time (take that, Beato).
@alexbaker75174 жыл бұрын

Aerosmith self title: Dream on, Mama kin & Movin' out. Self titled Antemasque first and only album to date. The band consists of Cedric Bixler Zavala, Omar Rodriguez Lopez (Mars Volta) Flea and Dave Ellitch. Mars Volta deloused in the comatorium.
@St997854 жыл бұрын
Deloused was great, for sure. Given how bias this was towards the grunge era stuff, and even including Linkin' Park, I'm surprised the Mars Volta got no love here.

@@St99785 yeah, but it is Rick's list, so don't be too hard on him. I love the grunge bands, but I'm not so sure Nirvana Bleach would have made my list, but hey that's beauty of preference. Thanks for your message!
@St997854 жыл бұрын
@@nealmoseley1982 I agree with you on Bleach. School and Blew had some sweet ass solos on them, and About a Girl was a cool change of pace. Love Buzz is okay, but I'm surprised that was their first single, as the original is WAY better than Nirvana's cover, but that's just my stupid opinion. Big Cheese is highly underrated too. But still, I wouldn't have called the album groundbreaking; certainly not at that moment in time. Only in retrospect i'd say it's quite good, but there are certainly better choices for sure.
