I have waited years to be able to have this conversation with Sting and longtime guitarist Dominic Miller. It was recorded at The Power Station Berklee NYC. Sting interviews have always been a grumpy tug-of-war. This is the first time I have ever seen Sting not only answer the question, but almost gleefully expand with sentiment. This is the best musician to musician Sting interview ever; hands down. Feather in your cap for this one Rick.

@Billy White Jr. That said , you could see at the start Sting wanted him to back down from the Music theory questions a little bit and go up a level from techniques to something a bit more meta (perhaps Stings a slightly more intuitive songwriter than Rick expected) But once Rick does , Sting completely unwinds and opens up completely.

More often than not you need a strong sparring partner to cut out the OK parts and instead end up with something great. Now watching for the 2nd time ;)

I am impressed by Rick's ability to so comfortably navigate this interview with his musical frame of reference, and especially in how well versed he is in Sting's catalog. I'm sure that was an atypical interview for Sting, Rick engaged him and he seemed to be stimulated and honored by Rick's professional well thought out compliments. No fluff, or flattery there.

Rick needs to be THE guy who interviews all musicians. He is the only person who can give substance and understanding to a conversation. I love how Sting, who has done 1000+ interviews starts all crossed up and leaning away. As Rick reveals his amazing knowledge Sting relaxes and leans forward because he knows this interview is different that all the others. Hats off Rick. I agree but I still think sting came across as a little bit pompous. I think having the 3rd party in the interview helped keep it grounded. it is not the best but it is one of them.. now it is very important to understand that sting is being nice.. he KNOWS music is finished.. he knows that today stuff wouldnt even rate in the 70s and 80s... he knows 99% of the "performers" now day would NEVER EVER pass a sting live session qualification.. i dont know why he is saying the complements he is saying aside from trying to sound nice since he is so loved by so many.. it is just like he say the things about whats going on in the world.. he knows the truth he just need to take a stand to not "hurt" anyone's feelings.. which is not really how it would be in the 1980's... sting is in most liklihood the most important modern musician of the last 50 years.. there is no one better in the last half century.. and very few coming to that level in the last 100 years... i really do not think he should complement as much as he does the garbage out there.. he knows rap is not music.. he knows that eminem is not rap musician but more of a pop musician who had success because he was melodic and only CHOSE the route he went to due to the times.. but he could have been pop musician and sing in duran duran type band just as much... there must be a threshold to be a musician.. and today it does NOT EXIST... musician must be able to PLAY INSTRUMENTS... TO WRITE MUSIC... DOES NOT HAVE TO READ NOTES.. BUT MUST BE ABLE TO EARN THE TITLE OF CELEBRITY DUE TO THEIR REAL TALENT OF BEING MUSICIAN..... NOTHING ELSE.. this is what sting did the best.. and today generation fail miserably in.. and sting KNOWS IT.. he;s just being nice.. he know this is a lost case with the 2020's... dom knows this too you can see on his face... rick HIMSELF knows it too because he would never ask it if he did not think so!

Yeah it seems like 99 procent of interviewers approach and address musicians like ‘hey what is it like to be famous? Everyone knows you!’ and I havent watched this interview yet, maybe Rick’s gonna ask something similiar but it is so helpful that Rick is a great musician and is so into music that his guests feel comfortable. His questions are based on geniune interest. The opposite of someone like Howard Stern who just bombards his guests with blunt questions.

It’s because of how often he is interview and hit with meaningless questions that don’t talk about the craft. He loves talking about the craft. I got a chance to talk to him in an interview setting with the audience got to ask questions and mine was around his musical approach. That’s the stuff he loves to talk about at this point in his career.

This is how you conduct an interview: Know your subject, let them speak, know when to probe and when to shut up and at some point it turns into a conversation. Here you have two typically reserved Englishmen who have probably sat through countless eyeball-glazing interviews, and ten minutes in they're relaxed, animated and enjoying themselves. Beautiful interview Rick, your warmth and knowledge made this happen.

You can see neither is hugely engaged at the start and I'd guess that's because their PR people have had them do stuff like this before that's just been absolute pants! I just watched the interview conducted by Rick Beato with Sting and Dominic Miller. Rick has this wonderful way of engaging Sting and Dominic while disarming them at the same time. At the start of the interview, both Sting and Dominic were cross-armed and possibly a little tense, not knowing what to expect, but Rick warmed to the series of questions he skillfully posed to both musicians allowing the kettle to breathe. By the end of the interview, all were laughing and seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. Questions were asked regarding Sting's writing, composing process, his chordal's genius, key choices, while also homage to The Beatles and Bach were noted. Rick was even able to coax Sting and Dominic to play a track off of the new album. This interview worked because Mr. Beato is a musician at heart; having trained on the bass and guitar, he understands harmony and chord structure. He has a genuine love for Sting's music and, in his way, nurtures that legacy further. I previously enjoyed Rick's interview with Peter Frampton. These interviews may be a new direction for you, Rick. I believe the door will be opened to further interviews with other musicians regarding the success of this interview with Sting and Dominic Miller. Well done!

Halfway through Sting was still cross-armed and touching his face, often glancing at Rick with a mixture of suspicion and disbelief ... and my interpretation is that Rick's detailed insight into anything about his songs, arrangements, band compositions ... was unsettling him because usually he's in total command at the musical or intellectual level. Rick's smile and body language was very disarming indeed but I'm not sure Sting would feel threatened more by stupid gossip questions, which he's used to evading, than by this kind of surprisingly intricate interview.

Sting wasn't happy at first because he sensed a lot of reverential awe and excitability coming from Rick's face, but then he realized Rick was a serious musician with good insights and questions and he relaxed into it. Well done Rick--Sting is a very tough interview as he is so gifted and smart.

Gifted and smart people can be perfectly nice and friendly. Gifted and smart people would have figured out, in old age, how to deal with reverential awe and excitability. Just sayin'. Whether that was why he came across like a curmudgeon at the beginning is your guess. Rick I worked as a studio engineer on "If On A Winter's Night" and "Symphonicities" with Sting. The Studio I worked at was Clinton Recording Studios at 46th and 10th Ave down the street from Powerstation (Avatar at the time). I will never forget that year of my life. Of all the cool people that came through our studio he was the one I never believed I'd get to work with. But I did and I met one of my biggest musical heros and he did not disappoint. What made this interview so GREAT was just how prepared and knowledgeable Rick was about Sting's music. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, Rick carried out this entire interview without prepared notes or cue cards for his questions. This created a very relaxed and natural human interaction that brought out the very best answers from his famous guests, and made it such a huge pleasure to watch. Rick made this entire interview seem like a very personal and intimate conversation about the inner depths of great music with some of the most gifted musicians and creators ever to exist on this planet. Never donated to any KZbin channel before and just donated to yours, Rick. I've watched this 3 times. Sent it to my 71 yr old Dad, both my brothers, and watched it with my 17 yr old son, who is working on one of Chopin's nocturnes for his piano recital. Rick, you are the bridge. What you're doing is a bridge. My Dad has said all my life that "Whiter Shade of Pale" was Air on a G String. He is fully vindicated to hear Sting and Dominic Miller say it. Soul Cages is my favorite Sting album. The song "Why Should I Cry for You?" guts me. Maybe there is a kid out there somewhere who will see this and get inspired to break us through this cul-de-sac of "stuck-ness" we are in as a culture, in music, politics, all of it. I’m new to this channel and agree wholeheartedly with the comments. Rick has such a depth of knowledge that it makes the conversation really meaningful and insightful. It's also interesting Dominic talking about Jason Robello. I had met them both with Kipper in 2000 during the Brand New Day Tour, they made me encounter Sting very briefly....But I could see their interaction and Dominic talking about him makes me smile...Back then one could see Jason was was the sweet one, Kipper was, the joker, and Dominic was Number Two. But the chemistry was very positive.

This is absolutely amazing, possibly the best interview with Sting that's ever been done. You can tell Sting and Dom are completely checked out at the beginning, like they assume this is just gonna be another MTV hit piece, but the tone changed absolutely hugely maybe 20 minutes in once Sting realized this was truly about the music, and that Rick was asking questions that matter to musicians. Flippin brilliant, top shelf interview Rick. This is gold.

A good interview is one where the parties, Sting and Dominic, are laid back and almost stern....trying to work out who Rick is and whether he knows his stuff....and then Rick talks about individual songs, structure, chord changes and just comes up with intelligent questions...and then you see Sting & Dominic slowly open up, realising Rick explores their songcraft in depth and they appreciate the line of questioning. I really, really enjoyed your confidence in asking these questions to one of music's most important contributors.

As an interviewer myself, I think that Rick perfected the craft of precisely reading the person. You need to be prepared, both emotionaly and technicaly to get things going. Moving Sting, which is renowned for his awkwardness and unpredictable behavior and temper, is a real achievement. High class material, and a huge quality content in so many ways, no matter if you are a musician or not. And, the fact Rick has no paper, no notes, nor is making any kind o signalling for some of his crew, carrying on the format of a layd back conversation, helps a lot to get at some points that most reporters or experienced journalists only coud dream of. By getting rid of a rigid structure of topics, he resonates with the guest, literally "jamming", with words, questions and themes. So, yes my good people. That's how it is masterly and properly done.

I noticed Sting's body language changed through the interview. In the beginning, he was a little more reserved (not surprising after conducting countless interviews over the years). But he absolutely relaxed and engaged as he realized he was in the company of a like-minded and extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful interviewer. I got the impression Sting enjoyed himself. Agreed. This wasn’t just the best Sting interview I’ve ever seen, but the best interview of any musician, ever. I think that’s bc Sting recognized that Rick is an excellent musician first (even though he didn’t play a note or lick), and an excellent interviewer second (he was able to speak the same musical intellectual lingo on the same level as Sting without showboating). I had the very same impression, but you said it better than me. When the interview started, the two guests had this look on their faces like where are we, who is this guy, and how the heck did we land here? But once the interview got under way they realized, this was a real interview by an actual musician who had done his homework. Safe to assume that Sting and Dominic would be impressive but the stage belonged to Rick. Great interview . I met both of them when I was working on a tv show in London TFI. We rehearsed on the a Thursday and you knew who was on. Usually 3 live acts but only two are here . There is a gap on the stage. Senior tv people don't know either . Friday is recoding day. A yellow Yamaha drums set arrives! Hell who plays this ! Word gets around its Manu , I'm a massive fan and then boom it's with Sting!! I'm told in no uncertain terms not to approach Sting . No autographs nothing! Well it was nearly the end of the series and I'm a massive Sting fan. Camera guy sees me going over to the dressing room !! Andy Andy no no don't , ah sod it knock knock Miles opens the door!! Yes what do you want. stings in the mirror, he turns round and I ask him for an autograph on my drum skin , he come out to the corridor and signs my drumhead. At this time everyone in the studio is silent awaiting the execution. Quite the opposite . At this time Chris Evans hired these pole dancers for the interval playing off and they are warming and stretching , and Sting says ,how old are you ? I said I was 28 . He says " well I wish I was 28" !!! He was such a nice guy to me . Met Dom in the bar after the show where he disclosed he was a Liverpool fan!! Sorry Dom I support the Blues!! Great day never forgotten.

Big Sting fan here. This is, by far, the most interesting Sting interview I’ve seen in many, many years, what a treat! Sting gets asked the same questions over and over again and you already know what he’s going to say when you hear them… Your interview was entirely original and in the end it shows that Sting really appreciated it. Every interview, everyone is surprised by Rick. He loves and knows his stuff inside and out, as he IS A FAN. Their people probably tell him "A record exec with a youtube channel wants to interview you" or some dumb bullshit like that. Their social media people tell them it will be good and they show up and get surprised. Rick asks the questions no other interviewer would, what Mic did you use here, what chord progression is that, why do you use these tones here etc. These are the things real musicians love and in 20 years, litterallt no interviewer has asked. Even a guitar world interviewer will touch upon gear with one question and move on, they never discuss melodies or mics, sound nuance to the extent Rick does I love every damn interview Rick does. Soo glad youtube suggested his channel. Keep up the great work Rick, we love your style my friend!

I have a suggestion... all of Mr Beato's interviews should be compulsory content at all institutions that exist to 'teach' music. What happens when Mr Beato interviews is - he demonstrates and elevates the connection between technique and emotion. He allows musicians and songwriters to share not only what's in their heads, but also - what's in their hearts. I truly LOVE the way Rick brings the stuff that's hidden into the open - and every time I tune in I'm reminded why Music is the central pulse of my life. You are doing a very, very good thing Mr B. Keep on keeping on.

@@willudallmusic He wasnt being asked anything and politely waited to be brought into the conversation, I thought. If there was one little detail about this wonderful interview I felt doubtful about while watching it, then it's that Dominic might have felt left out for a while. But that got apt better and eventually it was a conversation between 3 people rather than one interviewing two others.

This is probably the fifth time I watch this interview, and each time it's better... The way Rick conducts the interview, you can see how Sting and Dominic totally changed their attitude in the first 10 minutes... why? Because of smart questions, because of Rick letting them know he really admires them. When he mentions a quote from Sting's book, you can see Sting smiling... It's an amazing interview, so deep into the music and the fundamentals of their greatness. Good job, Mr. Beato.

Yes, the first minutes seemed rather stiff, but it seemed like Sting and Dom really opened up when they noticed the interview is going to be about stuff they really care about themselves, not the boring standard questions asked everywhere else.

My take is that they had to feel each other out a bit. I sensed a little trepidation on Sting's part that Rick was going to go heavy into music theory after the first question but when Sting made a reference to not being a Conservatory trained musician (5:07) Rick expertly backed off from that line of questioning and the three participants eased into a wonderful conversation about music and being a musician. Rick is a top notch interviewer and Sting and Dom are master musicians. Just can't find stuff like this anywhere else on KZbin.
