It's good hearing this teaching. I've used so much of it over the years. I've taught piano and have always stressed the circle of 5ths. I've taught my students that to find out the key fro the key signature, in sharps, the last sharp will be 1/2 step from the key. F# is the last in G; D# is the last sharp in E. In flats, the next to the last flat is the name of the key. In two flats, Bb and Eb the key is Bb/ Bb, Eb, Ab, DB, and Gb - the key is Db. So incredible how it works. Thanks again, Rick. You rock!

@Dex Vox it's only confusing if you try to understand it all at once. Music theory is a language, so you have to take baby steps first. If you don't understand something, go back to the basics until you do.

As for remembering the sharps through the clock I found that from key of g its 6th gets a sharp and it is kept to the next key so example is g,a,b,c,d,e#,f,g then key of d is d,e#,f,g,a,b#, c ,d then in key of e is same principle keep the previous keys sharp and add sharp to its 6th note. I hope that was expressed coherently.

I've watched your other videos like this, this is absolutely your most clear concise version, your best work for beginners imo. Plus I started painting recently and I never had a real understanding of the context of the circle of fifths but it exactly maps on to literal color-mixing, darks and brights, warm and cool etc. Thanks!

Associate ALL the things. I can find any major key just by memorizing the I IV V progression in C, a clock face and BEAD. I already have this lesson memorized because I know those three things and how major, minor and dominant chords are made. The new stuff I learned from this lesson was easy to associate to the previous things mentioned in this comment. Associations help you memorize more while having to remember less.

I rang the bell. I need to re-watch this several times as it's a little over my head. I'm hoping to grasp it at some point. I taught myself how to play guitar by copying finger positions for chords. After learning to play the chords, I started to recognize which songs used them. I don't even know the name of the chords I'm playing, but somehow managed to learn enough chords to play entire classic rock songs.

This was very helpful! Great explanation! Hint: secondary chords are a fifth apart, so are guitar strings! The secondary chord will be the note directly above (save for the second string).

Well i guess this isn't for the total beginner. You gotta understand the basic I ii iii IV V vi progression first. For me this video explained the relationship of the parallel and secondary dominant chords, and why they work.

Yeah this isn't a total beginner lesson. There's things you'd have to know before learning this. I would say this is an intermediary lesson and not basics lesson. I took an introduction to music theory in college and at the end we had finished the circle of fiths. Don't worry though just learn at your own pace and then it will all make sense.

This is the best lessons in theory that I ever got so far. Maybe after playing guitar for some years now I'm a little bit more relaxed after I realized that I could not learn to play like my heroes, because I'm too old to become that good but I found my place in doing the music. This lesson gave me the Information for memorizing the circle of fifth with all the sharps and flats during the first view. It is amazing how easy it was and how easy to build every scale from there. And as a benefit I got the second dominant on top. Great lesson, it opens, no it blew my mind.

I absolutely love songs that use the Maj 3 chord. Ophelia(the Band), Deal(Jerry Garcia) for example. The major third of the Maj 3 chord is a flat 2 to the tonic, so it makes for some colorful and chromatic tones for soloing over. Lots of fun. Thanks for all the great content!

Great lesson Rick. Thank you so much. After several years of playing, I've just recently started to study the Circle of 5th's and theory. I'm loving it. My very first lesson was similar to yours, although instead of being taught the circle of fifths to figure out the notes of each key, I was told to remember the major interval progression of whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole half. Then taught that the 1, 4, 5 were Major and 2,3,6 minor. I'm very glad I leaned those things so early! Its very cool learning about parallel chords and how they are used in a composition. So glad I'm know learning about more theory. Thanks for sharing so much. Your knowledge and background is amazing and inspiring!!!

There are 3 primary colors which all colors can be made: red blue &yellow Red+blue=purple, blue +yellow =green,red+yellow =orange

That's what is known as subtractive colour (also referred to as CMYK), but there is also additive colour (aka RGB) where you can approximate all human visible colours by combining red, green and blue.
