northeastrocker Don’t underestimate Mike McCready or Stone Gossard. Both are great guitar players but both are completely different than DeLeo. You don’t have to be a fan of their music but you should really watch them play. They’re an awesome duo.

STP is one of the "hidden gems" in the history of rock music. Nobody typically thinks of them at the level of the greatest bands of all time because they came up in the grunge era and got pigeonholed, but they are so much more than one genre. Great to see them still making music and moving forward. This video is an awesome testament to their writing and playing skill.

The laziest and worst thing to happen to STP was the David Spade SNL joke. It didn't matter that STP were nothing luke Pearl Jam. Or that Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop all by itself was better than anything PJ would ever do again, the moniker stuck. While Scotts Shangri-La-D-da/Pet Sounds analogy may have been wishful thinking, there was some truth in it. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds record sold about 400,000 copies at the time, and it was completely dismissed. Now its considered one of the greatest albums ever. The critics were both harsh and wrong about STP and I'm not holding my breathe for an apology

@@tony.g20I think it was just after their debut album Core, they were pigeonholed as PJ knockoffs. They sounded nothing like PJ except for both using baritone singing voices. Weiland went on to demonstrate the versatility of his voice over the course of his career and I think the reviews improved. I personally thought STP was better than PJ; never really got into Vedder's quivering monotonous baritone myself, though I don't dispute that they're a good band.

STP wasn't from the Seattle scene, where all of the quote-unquote grunge bands emerged from, and as much as I have always preferred STP to PJ, STP was still kind of generic in their sound. Many songs sound like one another, "Wicked Garden," "Dead and Bloated," "Sex Type Thing," etc. They didn't have great variation. Compared to Alice in Chains, they weren't in the same ballpark, if they were even in the same league. In their prime, none of the bands from the early 90s matched AIC. I think Pearl Jam deserves more credit than you give them, but they were certainly overrated at the time, largely thanks to extensive airplay. But, yeah, it's baffling to me when I encounter people who have never heard of STP. STP was one of the most played bands from the early 90s, after those prima donnas Nirvana.

Dean is completely underrated. His chordal work/writing is way outside the genres simplistic technical demands. Pretty much every song of theirs has excellent progressions cause of his playing/writing.

In 1994, my brother and I went to the STP concert in Las Vegas. We sat up in the balcony. A band called Redd Cross opened for them. I didn’t realize it at the time but I was seeing true legends. Musically, they were very, very tight. It sounded very well arranged and like the CDs. Especially Weiland’s vocals.

Totally agree. Tiny Music is my favorite STP album. Those songs are masterpieces, damn near every one of 'em. The jazz influence really comes out in full bloom on that album, but it's utilized in a way that really just makes the tracks more interesting ROCK songs. I guess technically it could be called jazz fusion, but the jazz is much more stealthy and clever than what I typically think of as jazz fusion. It in no way diminishes the rock core of their sound. Amazing production on Tiny Music as well.

When Core came out, and I was 16, I finally found the album that spoke to me as a teen. Then, when Purple came out my mind was blown. Looking back now, I prefer Purple to Core by a large margin (Core is till wicked). When Tiny Music came out, my first thoughts were - this isn't the STP I know and love, and I was hesitant. But after giving that album it's due, I now consider it my 2nd favorite, and from time to time, it moved into the first spot. Man, I love this band. Great video.

Slightly off topic but to do with RATM/Brendan O'Brien - I'm lucky enough to have worked in L.A with the guy (J.J) who owned the studio where Evil Empire was recorded (Cole I believe) this was back in 2006 but I asked him about the drum mic'ing on that session - he said nothing special, overheads...its all the room! but they did mic the snare top, bottom and...the air hole/vent! 3 mics! killer. It's actually Dean's brother Robert DeLeo (bassist) who is the jazz guy. Robert wrote most of their music, guitar riffs, etc. as well.

Totally stumbled upon this randomly, and my heart is just fluttering. I’ve been an STP fan since high school (mid 90s), and I was a music major in college (but that was years ago, I’ve forgotten most of my theory). One of the things I’ve loved so much about STP is that they’re not a straight I-IV-V-I kinda band. I have always had a very difficult time analyzing their progressions (now I know why), and something about that was just exciting and fun. Watching this breakdown of the chords and progressions is just magic, and listening to the isolated tracks gives me goosebumps. Makes me wish I had stuck with music professionally. The best way I've heard described the pauses you talk about at the end of the chorus and where ever else, is like breathing. It's where you take a breath when singing or talking. This works perfectly when playing wind instruments, because you need to breathe for the as well. It creates natural phrases. It's something that can get lost when playing instruments that don't need air to work them. It also gets lost now when things can just be edit together from scraps.

This song was and still is an absolute banger. STP is one of the first bands I remember hearing as a kid in the mid 90s. I remember asking my mom to leave the car running after we got home so songs like Plush and Interstate Love Song could finish playing on the radio before we went inside. Hey Rick this is just such a great channel. I always wonder about these songs and why they are so cool, how did the person come up with it, what were they thinking, etc. I don't know how many times I've seen youtube videos where people claim the person probably "just tried something out and it sounded cool, you don't need to get bogged down in theory, etc.". You, on the other hand, really are getting into what is going on with these tunes. These aren't just some bumbling idiots who do trial and error to come up with songs. They know what they are doing and you are breaking it down for musical illiterates like myself. So thanks for this, it's a really interesting series and really well put together.
