The haters will always hate Oasis for being too ”simple”, but honestly that’s the strangest type of criticism to give them. They play Pop-Rock music? Did people really expect them to shred constantly and play 7/8 beats in their songs? It’s POP MUSIC. Also just because the parts are ”simple” it does NOT mean that it’s easy to write. Coming up with great hooks and writing as great melodies as Noel did is a really underated ability that alot of famous musicians hasn’t even come close doing.

The TV series "Our Friends In The North" (1996) followed four friends from Newcastle through a significant period in English history 1964 to 1995. There were nine episodes and each episode finished with a representative song from that particular period. Before it became a hit single, "Don't Look Back In Anger" was chosen to finish the series because the Title was appropriate. The week the last episode played and the series ended, DLBIA was at No.1 in the charts in the UK. A bit of synchronicity. The final scene was iconic, with one of the main characters (played by Daniel Craig) walking away across the Tyne bridge to DLBIA, the no.1 hit record.

A person who basically has no knowledge of music (like me) would not recognize what is going on. What I do recognize is that it is a great song. By explaining it makes the piece even more interesting and ... understandable. I never realized how complicated this music was until now. But that is why I am a listener and not a musician I guess. Thanks, it was very enlightening. I am looking forward to more in the future.

yes, they are ( a big part ) of what makes a good drummer. the quietest little tickles on the snare on this one, if they weren't there the song would not be the same... and that drumfill, which Rick did not feature... class .....

Another classic based on Pachabels canon. It made a comeback in the 90s - such an underrated motif. Greenday used a varient for Basketcase. Love it.

Awesome song, and has massively improved over the years as an anthem. Great simple guitar parts which are truly amazing to come up with. And Noel’s vocals are so good in this song. Obviously I’m an Oasis fan but they’re music is so great. And as Noel’s guitar playing some would say they are simple guitar parts, but how many people can actually create such amazing simple guitar parts and make songs sound and feel great. Another great video Rick cheers. Everyone stay safe. 🙏

It's worth noting that Oasis were the last real "rock band" to take over the world, the biggest "indie" act of all time (in terms of financial success,) and that Noel and Liam are truly the last of the old school "rock stars" to come out of pop music. I don't find it coincidental at all, that no one has since done it to their scale, as they arrived just prior to the dawning of the mass use of the internet and the cellphone.

Rick, just loving your constructive dismantling of a favourite anthem of 90s Britpop. It has the power to transport us back to freer, happier times in an otherwise grey, monotonous Britain, which has decayed all my life. Alan White didn’t survive in the band beyond this seminal album, which I recall queuing to buy in 1995. I still have it. We were on the cusp of irreversible change, as the public internet hadn’t yet arrived. Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences. Oh, and I really look forward to All The Young Dudes. Mott The Hoople’s biggest hit by far, penned by David Bowie, a huge fan of the Hoople.

What an album that was! Recorded at Lennon's Ascot Studio which was off the kitchen at home. The last place anyone would expect a studio to be. Badfinger got lost looking for it! Walked the entire estate looking. Nothing locked or anything. Like Spinal Tap.

Interesting fact about this song. The line "so sally can wait" was actually suggested by Liam. Noel was demoing the song at a sound check and during the chrous, Noel said something incoherent and Liam said "are you singing so sally can wait" to which Noel added to the song, and the rest is history
@partypoison91534 жыл бұрын
Noel was actually singing something rubbish like 'so jim will fix it' lmao and then liam was like 'are you singing so sally can wait? if not then you should'. noel actually added it, damn good old days when the brothers actually got along and listened to each other.
@andrewhankin55614 жыл бұрын
Who's Sally? Noel said once that there's no specific Sally - it's just a girl's name that he included (perhaps after Liam's suggestion, above), so he might get to meet girls called Sally after every gig at which he had sung this song!

I dig space in a song. And I also dig what we used to call a "band lead" in an important section of the song where nobody is taking a lead but the whole band is playing a worked out part.
