Oh my gosh, does Tommy ever have a bad day? I was living in the North East of England for 6 years (I’m presently in Australia). A friend called one day and said Tommy Emmanuel is performing in the local pub. I said, no he isn’t. Tommy performs to thousands. Well, my friend gave me the number of the pub (called the Ropery in Sunderland). We booked in and decided to go for a meal before the concert. Who should be in the restaurant but fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel. We introduced ourselves and he shook our hands and was such a nice guy. After dinner Tommy performed to a packed house of about 100 people. I believe he blew the speakers in the pub. During the two hour performance he welcomed the “fellow Aussies” to the pub and performed an Aussie medley just for us. What a super-nice guy he is. I will never forget that night or Tommy’s flawless and amazing performance. Thanks again for featuring him on you awesome channel Rick. I love it. Dave from down-under 🇦🇺

This IS really the idea, to play music and not really the guitar at all - but honestly you have to ‘hear’ it in your head as music - and have enough technique that you can forget it all and just say things… it’s the way to go but it takes 10,000 hours to get there and you need the mental aptitude to just speak vs playing shapes and patterns and it’s like another level of communicating - which in the end, thats what it is - “communication”

Sooo good! I caught him for the first time in the late 1990s at Winfield. Then, later after I started my business I attented one of his master classes and gave him a compressor (yeah I know that's the exact wrong effect this guy needs, but I wanted to give him something!). He blew my mind playing two different Beatles songs at the same time. Such a masterful performer as well.

A few thoughts occur to me on viewing this. Tommy’s greatness is a result of an immense knowledge of popular music combined with complete mastery of his instrument and rich refined taste. As other commenters have noted, he doesn’t impose his ego on a piece but uses his knowledge and taste In service of the music while making a fresh statement. Watch how little Rick speaks. Instead he plays the role of the listener (course you aren’t going to find a smarter listener anywhere in the world) and responds to the amazing musical choices Tommy makes. I keep saying this - so many of Rick’s interviews should be in the Library of Congress to preserve our cultural heritage. For sure, this is one of them.

I love Tommy's playing. He's so versatile but still very good in the genres that he plays in. Seeing him play jazz with Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola, and him blasting out electric blues with Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith were such treats. He is a virtuoso but a very listenable virtuoso. That "Ray Charles" line he did made me just laugh out loud with how insane that was. Was it a counterpoint in musical terms?
