I remember telling Jaco how much I admired Pat’s playing on BSL. He smiled, put down his bass, walked to the phone and called Pat in Boston. I loved his vibe, self-effacing, interested in my thoughts. I knew we’d meet, hoped we’d work together. Somehow it didn’t come to pass until Jaco’s funeral that we’d have some time together. It was an unbearably sad day. I remember hours sitting together outdoors, much of it quiet. Pat played magnificently at a tribute the next day. I will never forget the heights to which his playing rose for that performance of love. It was so intense I went home to cry.

Great memories of Jaco, I recall meeting him at the Sea Ranch Lakes Beach Club around 1980 when I was 11. I was down visiting my grandfather who was the Mayor and Jaco was there with some group of friends. My uncle knew him and took me over to say hello. He was very friendly and nice to me and hung out with us for a while. I met him a few years later at Kim’s Alley Bar while I was down for Easter and saw him play piano. I talked to him after and he was clearly not doing well but still very friendly. He remembered my family and asked about them and also asked me who my my favorite band was and I told him Weather Report. He told me it was his also and laughed. Such a talent and good guy. God bless Jaco.

I think Pat sold out. These videos of him about the making of his albums has become this self obsession over himself, VERY cheesy, selling coffee cups, t-shirts, the DI ADario Strings advertisement is beyond pathetic and an embarrassment. Many questions. What happened to Lyle? Dropped like a hot potato. No mention of tribute to him? Then that album where he plays every instrument with this automated robot machines, showing us he is suppose to be this "god" figure, and year by year the record albums just get worse and worse. But what is particularly disturbing is that most real sincere artist, let their music speak for itself, Pat seems to parade himself on bragging about every album, as "The first time" as if he has discovered the cure for cancer. I won't buy it.
@russell_szabados3 ай бұрын
@@coralgala8180 ok buddy, you go on through life thinking that jazz musicians and artists of all kinds are all rich and can pay their bills just by releasing music alone and doing gigs. That’s a world that doesn’t exist. People who expect artists to stick to some code of artistic purity are CLUELESS and don’t deserve to enjoy any artist’s expression. I remember Pat’s trio with Jaco and Bob Moses. It was at a 1977 gig at a bar in downtown Hartford, CT called Mad Murphy’s. The sign out front read: Pat Metheny (gtr) Bob Moses (dms) “Jocko” (bass) $3.00. I already knew Pat and Bob’s work with the Gary Burton Quintet (which also included Steve Swallow and Mick Goodrick). I wondered, ‘Who’s Jocko?’ Well, I soon found out! Years later, I would see Jaco again, this time with Weather Report at the Kool Jazz Festival at SPAC. Jaco played a solo of “Purple Haze.” By then, he was a superstar. To think I saw Pat Metheny’s band (as he mentions in Rick’s interview) in a bar for three bucks makes me smile to this day.

He played Bright Size Life and Sirabhorn, and many of the Letter From home Album, Secret Story which are some of my favorite tunes which I grew up with. He even played Slip Away which I didn´t expect AT ALL!. He ended the set with Have you heard, which can be found already on this site. I didn´t think there was room to improve for him but I can say that his solo guitar playing has become even better. He really showed us what is it like to be a master of the instrument. The band is really sharp and the dynamics that were displayed really had us on the edge of our seat. I'm not that savvy, but I thought, there might be something here. I had heard of Jaco, but not Pat... after about the 100th time listening, I started to hear the genius and interplay between 3 geniuses. I've listened to it hundreds of times since then, and every time it seems fresh. What occurred to me, is that it took me a long time to understand... but they did it live, interacting with each other, at a very young age: that blows me away. It was so loose and tight at the same time. Who can do that? Even now.

Oh, thanks, that's what I was looking for. I think that's it, this sort of muffled/unfinished sound.

It must be surreal for Pat to think 45 years later that he wrote and recorded a jazz classic.

6:13 - where's the clam he's talking about on the song Bright Size Life?

Thanks to @ignacio-araya on another comment, it seems to be the sort of muffled/unfinished little sound at 0:45 on the original recording.

I like Rick’s affect here: “Hot damn, I’m rapping with Pat Metheny.”

I find it remarkable that a guitar player remembers the bassplayers (even it was Jaco) amplifier (acoustic 360) literally 45 years after the record was made, even though it is no longer even made

That was THE bass amp at the time. Only slightly smaller than a refrigerator, but you had to have it.

I saw Jaco in a tiny little club in NYC in the 80's. I was about 3 feet away from him. By that time he was doing some serious drugs, but he played great and his imrov was unbelievable. I didn't know it would be the last time I would ever get to see him.What a waste! Drugs have messed up too many peoples lives.

Pat, you have no idea how lucky you ar to know Jaco, to be friend and his bandmate ...no doubt that you are one of the best, but Jaco was way more than just a great Jazz Cat...he shines Angelic Energy when he plays and even when he talks...so sad that he's not around...really sad.

I knew Jaco in NYC; hanging around Wash Park. He was a musical Superhero-- if you saw him at The Lone Star, you'd never forget-- Jumping from the Second floor. I referred a friend to take bass lessons from him at The New School for walking around money, and drank at the Red Lion... Paul Butterfield was there one night.
