Rick, I really appreciate the lessons on the mechanics of playing like this video. I've got a good ear and understand theory a little, but my playing is / was suffering from mechanics a little. Speed suffers, etc, and I've already really improved by just watching these video's and doing some practice. Thanks so much. P.S. I've got to try one of those LTD guitars. They're really nice for the money. I've tried one of the LP like versions and it was killer for the money! Tim Indiana. USA.

Hey Rick, just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge on this and other stuff that you've put up on youtube. The economy picking lessons on your website are great too, I'm working through them at home and finding them very helpful. You are a very inspiring guy to someone like me, to see such dedication and discipline through both your guitar playing and through your physical transformation helps to keep me driven and ambitious. So if you are reading this, thanks again and all the best! Cheers

This lessons of yours are really amazing. I guess, only person with sufficient guitar playing experience can actually realize, how deep they are and how many benefits you can gain from them (coz I was just thinking, why the hell you have only 40,5k subscribers? Then I remembered, that all "cool" guitar players need killing shred licks and all that stuff from day one playing guitar). And you really remind me my guitar teacher, lol, same tensions to improve playing from very basis, building solid and good playing technique and teaching people same way. Many thanks to you.

rick, one thing that I've always questioned with your guitar sound is the way the distortion or grit you have somehow causes sustained notes with no vibrato to start sounding like the waves of the actual tone are coming out of phase--almost like the sound of a unison interval just barely splitting up by couple hertz. for me it sounds like an error in playing--that your guitar sound may be forcing you to make. But then again that could just be your voice you want to come out of your instrument when it speaks. I'm more into having a pure sound that can be closer to a voice or most instruments you might find in an orchestra. hope that makes sense.

Question for developing good practice habit: Do I hold down the previous note(s) played while ascending on a single string or lift/release what's not actually being played? For example: 3 note per string legato ascent with fingers 1,2,4, Thanks for any help.

Hey man, do you ever find it difficult to combine weight-training and guitar playing- does it effect the hands?
@aashmanvyas9159
@aashmanvyas9159 8 жыл бұрын
Not for me - As long as you stretch out and do wrist exercises regularly, lifting shouldn't affect your playing.

Heavy weight lifting did not do my playing any favors. Light weights lots of reps did. Stay away from creatine. It's not bad for you, but it made my hands all Arnold Schwartzy. They need to be all Bruce Lee-ey.

Russ Wilson I haven't played guitar much in the past year and half because of noisy neighbors. So, just concentrating on heavy gym sessions and surfing, which causes waterlogging and weak nails for acoustic

Hi, I have an *advanced question* regarding left hand fretting technique. I noticed elite guitarists eg Paul Gilbert, EVH curl the inactive fingers into the palm when playing passages. For example if they're playing a passage that requires a 1-3-4 finger combination, the 2nd finger will be tucked away into the palm. Same if they're using a 1-2-4 combination, the 3rd finger is tucked into the palm. I see this quite often with elite players. I try to integrate this into my playing, although it feels a little awkward, it does seem easier to play sometimes, especially legato as it seems to prevent the inactive finger from engaging due to sympathetic tension. I've been taught to actually keep the inactive fingers hovering above the strings, along the same axis as the active fingers.... Could you/someone shine some light on this topic? thanks

Despite advanced players doing that, it really isn't a good habit, as if you need that tucked away finger, it won't immediately be available for you to use efficiently. Rick actually talks about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbOdIiPfNN4jc0

To me, one of the most controversial aspect when it comes to work on legato and left hand technique in general is the sound setting. Do I have to practice with a clean sound or a distorted sound? I know that left hand playing without the sustain given by distortions isn't really audible but, on the other hand, wouldn't practice until you make any played note audible EVEN on clean settings be preferable?
@saulslashgibson

+Travis the Great Practice with both. Use clean sounds to make sure your notes are strong and audible, and use distorted sounds to make sure your technique isn't sloppy. Distorted settings may pick up on sloppy nuances and string noise that clean settings won't.

Index finger tapping and hammering? My first Metallica solo was Blackened and the last section of that solo is a frantic index finger tap on the G string going across the whole neck. It took me forever to master that section with my index finger and I thought it was because my genetics failed me and I just had a crappy index finger.

by the way Rick, can we remove all that distortion, delays, equalizer ? etc, etc etc or can we play it with a clean sound? Don't you move your fingers too much? I don't see any right articulation on your knuckles. Review classical studies at some point.
