"Chats with Guitar Cats" Episode #1
I surprise studio legend Louie Shelton as we recall his younger years by pulling out a guitar like the one that started it all for him as Little Junior Shelton back in Little Rock Arkansas - a genuine vintage 1952 Fender Telecaster.
Like, subscribe and leave a comment if you would like Louie to do a KZbin Live Chit Chat with me so you can ask him questions in the live chat room.

What a fantastic player Shelton is. This whole interview surprised me of how actually good he is, he went from rockabilly, country to Segovia and Bach. Fender should make his own signature Tele 52' is an understatement. There is a reason why all of these known musicians hired him.

I played a show where Louie was filling in for our guitarist. I didn't get as chance to speak to him and I wasn't told his name. From the first tune I knew he was world class. In the set break I spoke to him and when he introduced himself I nearly fell over. I knew of him instantly. I was only 24 at the time

Man I just love it when I stumble across a gem like this on youtube. I was one of the millions of teens that started playing electric guitars in the mid 60's, inspired by guitar playing like Mr. Shelton's on so many songs of that era. It's a gift he gave me and I still enjoy to this day very much. Especially now, when we are under stay-at-home orders. If it weren't for guitar playing I'd probably go nuts. Sincere gratitude to you Mr. Shelton. You did a really good job with this Rick, especially considering it was the first interview you did and an impromptu get-together. I was spellbound the entire video. Thanks to you as well, take care. I'll be watching for the next time you get together with Mr. Shelton.

I have a 1952 Tele. The newer ones - even late 50s, don't compare. There's one reason why they are SO valuable. They are not so thin and spiky, although they are still like a Tele. They have wooden warmth, kind of a sweetness - as you can hear here. They tend to be lighter (not much paint or lacquer at all) and easier to play than many later ones.

The value of that '52 instantly increased. Louis is such a great player, gentleman, and interviewee. I always enjoy seeing and seeing him. Brother - "Leo almost got it right with the Tele." implying that the Strat was/is perfection. I'm surprised you said that. Louis, ever the gentleman, politely corrected that mis-step.

Louie Shelton, "Pickin' The Chicken" and Excellent Ect. !!! 👍😎🎸😀 Chet Atkins, Merl Travis, Flat & Scrubs, Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell, so many greats without a bunch of effects or massive amps just pure Master Guitar Musicianship !!! Louie Shelton played at the Jamboree Barn where a lot of the greats came to play passing through town headed to or coming from other gigs and wherever s else. I was in a band with my bass player and another guitarist best friends. We didn't have a drummer for a few years. We were fortunate to get to sit in with the house band and those who showed up to play at the local Jamboree Barn here in Arkansas years ago. I borrowed my neighbors '52 Tele just like on this video. My neighbors band tried to get us to join their band but we just sat in with them at jam nights and they snuck us into bar playing midweek and weekend nights. We were at a BBQ, and my neighbor's pet goat ate the '52 Tele all to hell and the owner BBQ'd the goat, aw man that guitar was "My Precious" that got turned into Firewood. The electronics and hardware was the only items worth saving from the guitar. I made a necklace and bracelet and hang chain for my new Carvin electric guitar that I got for high school graduation. Man, you just do not find guitarists hardly here in Arkansas to play tunes , especially as the likes of Louie Shelton !!! These were the guitarists that I idolized growing up as I was learning to play guitar and headed on into other music styles and genres over the years. It's all the Legends come and gone and those still with us that got most all Music where it is present day and into the beyond . . . I wonder if Louie Shelton ever played or jammed with Pedal Steel Innovator "Zane Beck" ??? That fellow was a Master Musician and Luthier as well !!! Thanks For This Video Of Memories Rick Hollis, It is Most Sincerely Appreciated !!! Play 🎸On FretBro's & FretSis's . . . 👍😎🎸🤘🙂🇺🇸🙏 DDH 6-7-2023.

Roy Rogers, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Hank Williams Sr., etc...even though I was just a kid, I knew those dudes were crazy special. My grandfather would play their vinyl's once in a while, I guess when he noticed me listening to my Sony Walkman, and AC/DC, or Ozzy, whatever, maybe a coincidence, but it really felt like he wanted me to appreciate where what I loved at the time, came from...I remember I'd take my headphones off, and spend time listening with him. He'd tell me "one day you can be that good with practice, you got the gift"(I was about 8 or 9 then)he passed away a few years after...and unfortunately, no, I never came even close lol. My Dad tried a few dozen times to teach me the old mountain songs from his good years, but rarely had more than a few minutes patience. I was a slow learner, even 30 years of playing later, those older licks, are still amazing to me, they sounded almost like magic, especially some of Roy's stuff. Considering nobody was doing what they were doing, it was so groundbreaking in that era, the chances of something new being what other people wanted to hear is just a shot in the dark, but a lot of those guys got that formula just right. I wish so bad that I could go back, and really appreciate those days, burn those memories, and practice a LOT more, it just wasn't my type of music then, but in so many ways it was, I just didn't know it. Respect.

A living legend, no doubt. SEVENTY years in music, most at the highest level. And still going. I'm so envious of this dude, earning a real good living all of that time from doing something that he clearly loves. But also really pleased for him. Seems like he deserved it. A beautiful human.

@@paulas1man to be fair, this was when I was between 5 and 10 years old, years before I ever picked up a guitar. And Louie didn't visit regular- regularly...like every week or anything. There were just a handful of visits that I recall... probably 5 or so. Under 10. So the only lessons he could have possibly given me would have been a few basic, beginner ones. Like..this is an A chord..sort of thing.

@@lueysixty-six7300 I'm just kidding with you man. Louie is just such a nice guy, it would have been a thrill to have just been in the same room with him. My dad played in a band when he was young. I was 5 years old when my dad would be jamming on some Jimmy Reed and other old blues artists. It was great as I remember it with dad playing his 1964 sunburst stratocaster with a maple neck and an old tube amp. It was a good time, but dad was no Louis Shelton. I am sure you cherish that memory. Good talking with you

My first Louie moment was the fierce Spanish flavored soloing on the Monkees' "Valleri". Not a huge fan of the song itself, but that guitar work was jaw-dropping. Nobody was doing that for late 60s pop-rock.
