Ricki Lake opens up on her ex-husband's battle with bipolar disorder

The actress and former talk show host spoke out in an interview with People magazine about her ex-husband's struggle with bipolar disorder and how it impacted their marriage.

Got married to a bipolar type 1 man in March, he left me in June. Told me he didn’t love me like he thought he did. He sent me divorce papers that I had to sign a couple days ago. The majority of these people just TEAR YOU APART. I’ve been going to therapy every week since and I had to be put on depression medication. My life will never be the same.

Diane VanHandel If you look at the statistics 90 percent of bipolar marriages end in divorce. It doesn’t matter if you’re properly medicated. My Aunt struggles with her episodes in and out all the time even on her meds...it just depends on the person.

I search for videos of ex spouses and their stories of what they had to deal with as caretakers to these bipolar people, and I really have a hard time finding anyone’s commentary from the caretakers point of view. I appreciate those who did leave comments here under this video. Thank you very much.

He can't help having bipolar. I'm sorry you have problems and feel alone. Bipolar causes money problems from uncharacteristic behavior and this causes great shame and is a hard disorder to live with.

Wow! I found out after infidelity that he was hypersexual due to Bipolar 2. There have been several manic episodes since. I'm trying to leave but he will be vicious when I try. It's a HORRIBLE disorder. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is EXACTLY what it feels like.

She said that he had many other issues going on apart from the Bipolar. There are many that see the trip through the bad side effects of medications too.They should not be discounted.Their courage is valid too.

I'm here because I just realized my spouse of 13 years couldn't be bipolar. The Dr. Jeckle Mr. Hide part hit home. All this time I thought it was the alcoholism making him "crazy".

I have Bipolar 1 Disorder and my husband also has Bipolar 1 Disorder. Neither of us are currently on any medication for it. We're just two crazy ass mother fuckers in love.....even if we hate each other one minute and then fall madly back in love with each other the next. Lol!

It's those medications that they put people on I have personally seen that happening over 20 years of my medical experience I'm not a doctor or a nurse but I have seen it it's all those medications they calls that they cause suicidal thoughts and tendencies and they bring on more depression there is more side effects and what is listed then what clip to the bag when you get your medications so sad so heartbreaking I'm sorry for her loss and other people out there to please take note that depression I know is real but medications are for short-term therapy only this is just an opinion take care everybody be well stay safe lots of love

I pray you can continue Samir part that is you are still there whole looking beautiful as everyour struggle is very familiar I am losing my hair at the age of 60 it's been going on for years it's very thin now and when it gets too too thin I'm going to have to cut it I'm ready for that day remember that you are gorgeous

You probably would have left if you found them beating up your cat, putting it in the freezer, tied up with cord…you would probably leave them if he killed your kids guinea pigs and started cheating on you when your oldest daughter, at eight years old, got brain cancer. Then they disappeared with their other woman and left you all alone alone with no family and no back up to help you. You might age and be so bitter with life because you weren’t able to leave due to finances and no family support because they were all dead. You might be upset and leave them after driving your daughter to school with a tube down her nose and you look over to the local hotel parking lot and you see your husband‘s car there with his mistress. Neither he nor his mistress even spoke the same language. You just might leave if you were not financially trapped like I still am today!

I actually thought Ricki Lake was male! I know the name can be short for Richelle, like Richard, but it just sounds so macho!
