So beautiful and expertly performed by a true artist

This song, this album is a main part of the soundtrack of my life. It came out the first time I fell in love. I was experiencing a new life, with new experiences, with new feelings. It was 1979, I was 24 and we had this 8 track playing in my car at all times. Her haunting music, with the descriptive lyrics kept us mesmerized. No, we didn’t stay together, but keep in touch to this very day. Funny how we both say the same thing that whenever we hear Rickie today, we are automatically transported back to Santa Barbara, young and in love. We’re both 65 now but we can feel and smell the ocean breezes and hear the music of Rickie. Thank you Rickie for being a special part of my/our lives.

Never worry about dislikers. They don't matter. The lovers are who matter. She is one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters ever. She stands (or perhaps stumbles, it doesn't matter) with the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Michelle Gurevich, etc., Those who sing real, wild, beautiful, individual, rebellious living. Those finding what beauty is in this world ...

+Robert Boyd Amen to that Robert. My only regret is I don't own her debut album or any other of her material. Shame on me. Tonight as I listen to many of those tracks from her debut album, along with numerous other tracks on You Tube, there is no doubt in my mind, that Rickie Lee Jones is one of the most talented and true artists of our time. It's time for me to get serious about adding a bunch of Rickie Lee Jones albums to my already exhaustive vinyl collection....

Robert Boyd I'm a big Rickie Lee Jones lover, I've been playing her since I was 15 years old... Rickie, indeed... I'm an LA teen, who grew up really too fast... Rickie unknowingly wrote about people I mixed with in the motel rooms and in the streets of LA. Much like her songs, but, that came from her own experiences, and oddly "WEST SIDE STORY"... She captivated me, and made me cry with her debut album and from then on... Rickie's an artist's artist!! She's genius, her musicality comes from a very deep place. I'm grateful to have caught the ride from 1979. When I first heard the single on the radio of "Chuck E's In Love", I said "Oh God, she was what was missing!" I'm 54 years old now. I really think the recording industry ripped her off.. I'm from the big City of Angels... Where every music buff owned at least the Debut and "Pirates", and then the diehards like me bought them all... Oh well.... Just felt like sharing. Her voice pierces with a beautiful cry in it. Then creeps in a window like an innapropriate voyeur, listening to a mother settling a child down with a lullaluby. Or a woman singing softly to her lover... The writing is so unique. We used to drive to Palm Springs CA and listen to "Flying Cowboys"... It was a perfect soundtrack. I saw her at the Wiltern Theater at the time of the "Flying Cowboys" album. A couple was entertaining a Chinese couple, on their two week business trip. They had only heard "Chuck E's In Love". And loved it from 10 years before, but nothing else from Rickie. Both, the Chinese husband and wife were in tears. They were blown away by Rickie's artistry. They were wiping the tears from their eyes, after her show completed, and they said, "How come her music isn't being played on American radio, it's so beautiful!!!" As if saying what is being played on American radio was sub-par. The 80's.... Me and my friends just looked at each other. Because we had once asked ourselves that question long ago...

That was so beautiful. I have been listening to that record since it came out in 1979 or so. It’s one of those that I listen to from start to finish EVERY time. I just adore her. That record is a masterpiece. I am a truck driver and that song fills me with dreamy highway imagery and I love how she tops it off with the sounds of the cars going by . She is so talented. God bless Rickie Lee Jones.

My wife and I took our 9 year-old daughter to her first concert in the fall of 1979 ... Rickie Lee Jones at Portland's Civic Auditorium. Her vocalization of a car whizzing by on a desert highway is as good as singing gets, and got a standing ovation that night.

Geez, whatta find! I had almost forgotten how she filled my nights with her voice and her music when I was a young lad. I used to dream of her life, and Tom's and Chuck E's. at the Tropicana... This clip is great, a real powerful performance: she fills the stage and makes you hold your breath and vibrate with every note she plays. Her voice is still incredibly full of shadows and sparks. Love you, RLJ.
