The first time I heard Rickie Lee Jones was the summer of '79 and I was driving an old beat up Valiant - almost out of gas wondering if I'd make it home - university student and penniless. Then her voice came over a relatively new local FM radio station OZ-FM in St. John's, NL. The song was Chuck E's In Love and I remember saying to myself - who is this person with such a fantastic unique voice and with lyrics that were so original. I was blown away! She was so different from the main stream music at the time - this was my music! I had to find out more about her so went to a music store to see if she had an album out - found the album titled "Rickie Lee Jones" with the cool cover of her which matched her cool original music. I had to scrape up enough money so I could buy the album which was a couple of days later - hoping there would be one left. I played that album so much that I wore it out and had to go and buy another :) So nice to see her looking good, playing and singing so good! One of a kind!

Almost identical situation when I was first introduced to her different musical style. Yep, instead of a Valiant I was driving a '59 Dodge station wagon (with a push button transmission) that I had bought to ferry around the little league baseball team I was coaching in around '76 or '77. Chuck Es in Love. Zackly the same. Goin to college, and bein a freak !

Excellent! Similar timing for me getting to know her music in the early days (HS class of '77). Over the years Ms. Jone's haunting voice, intricate and varied musical styles and engaging lyrics have touched me deeply. For sure I'm a better human for having discovered and absorbed this art over the years. As long as we are talking vehicles I was driving a 1964 Ford F100 with a straight 6 and three on the tree. Peace and love to all...

I had the same feeling first seeing her on SNL in ‘79. Blew me away. I got the album right away. With what money, I don’t know, because I had none. Still love her music that hits in some deep place in my gut.

My God, you still blow my mind, Rickie. I first fell in love with your music in '79, like most others. I saw you in Melbourne in '84. No one comes close to your genius of voice, harmony, poetry, orchestration and arrangement. Can't express properly in words how much I appreciate what you have done to my world. Much love from where I live now in Vietnam. Still following you. Thank you with all my heart.

Listening in remembrance of my brother who we lost in December. We both worked at a record store when your first LP came out. We were both totally bowled over! We both remained lifelong fans, but he was over the top for you. Mutual friends got him some autographed albums to him and he had 3-4 really large and cool posters of you. Some framed, some 1/2” cardboard. I came home with all those after he passed away, because my two sisters were fans but not as fervent as we were so I felt they would have a beautiful home with me. Just had his memorial on a creek bank in Tennessee last weekend. I ordered ten old posters and took one of yours to display at the memorial. You also were in the playlist I worked for a month and a half on. RIP Wes, we’re still dancing with you in spirit! As beautiful now RLJ as you were in whatever year that was! Blessings to you for the joy you bring to so many! 😎💐🌺🌻

I went to see Rickie in concert, in Portland, OR. It was either 1979 or 1980. We passed by her tour bus, parked outside the venue [the Civic Auditorium in downtown], and some of her roadies were hanging out the windows asking if anyone had any weed. I happened to have a joint with me, pulled it out, handed it up to one of them, and they said, 'Hey, thanks. We're gonna party after the show, so stop by if you want to...' Well, my date was a very shy guy and wouldn't have felt comfortable with doing that. But, whenever I think about that night, I greatly regret not taking advantage of that one chance to meet Rickie and let her know how much I love her music and her very heart-centered Beingness. [One of our favorite moments of that show was when Rickie stopped, mid-song at her piano, and said, "Hey! There's a goddamn baby out there?!" It was not a complaint, just a humorous acknowledgment that a young fan wouldn't miss her show, even if it meant bringing the baby along. A delightful moment, making everyone laugh & applaud.] Love her still, as much as ever. Her music is timeless, to me, and resonates with me in ways that no other artist ever has. Rickie and Joni Mitchell are my top two favorite female music artists [Van Morrison being the male 'top fave' artist]. Singer songwriters who write from the depths of their human and spiritual experiences, and resonate with large swaths of the population, are so crucial to our growth. This type of artistic contribution to humanity's evolution is becoming more and more marginalized in this technological age, much to our detriment. May we all do what we can to keep alive an awareness of the importance of the arts to our collective well being. 💞🙏☯☮ P.S. I'm thrilled that Rickie now has a memoir out! Will be reading it soon 💖

Rickie, I have absolutely adored your music since I first heard you in 1984. No words can express the gratitude I have for connecting with your art. I even saw you perform in Canada live in 1986. The audience was sitting down but my two friends and I could not help but get up and dance. Thank you SO much for everything. You still play with such beauty and emotion. I am a singer myself and will always have a special place for you in my heart. You and Tom Waits have become part of who I am. Love you Rickie.

Rickie played in Sydney, Australia in about 1985. Great show. After the show, two of my mates followed her limo to the hotel where she was staying. She was having an after show function; being awarded a platinum record or something. The boys were hoveing around whistfully when Rickie took the time to break away from the party, signed their CDs and gave them both a peck on the cheek to send them on their way. I know that that moment was a teen highlight for the two of them. Wonderful talent and lovely person to boot: a rare combination.
