Hi Rickie Lee Jones~ I listened to you back in high school during the late '70s. I loved you then and I love you now (and all the years in between). I just read your book-- and your words-- whether they take the form of lyrics or a book, touch the heart, the soul and reach and find the melancholy corners that are hard to access. "Artist" is not a word to be tossed around-- You are one!

i just love how she weaves stories with song in this live session. her stories are like songs and her songs are like stories. which makes weaving them together so interesting. i saw her live in santa cruz in the 1990s. i think that was during the ghostyhead period. wow what a concert that was. it felt like such an intimate experience and it was because it was a pretty small venue. something beckoned me yesterday to do a youtube search on her, i hadn't heard her in a long time. and i was missing her. and i came across this beautiful little gem. thanks rickie, you still totally rock!

OMG!!! I’m so thrilled you did “Real End”, I’ve never heard a live version! Soooooo good! I met you at The People Magazine/Carol King soirée in NYC circa 1996. You invited me to your show at Joe’s Pub and had my late friend Steven come along. You were superb. It was so kind and generous of you to indulge us with your time backstage after the show. Your mood is consistently real, ethereal and ever preset when you’re not momentary drifting back into your own world. One of my very favorite moments in time. So good to hear you sounding better than ever. I’ve never seen another artist who continues to grow dimensionally and exponentially as much as you. Very best from the 30th Fl above Hell’s Kitchen. ❤

We saw her solo in Knoxville in 1990 or there abouts. Walked out, played "Last Chance Texaco", and it was on. After a few more songs, she set her guitar down, walked over to the piano, lit some candles, asked for the stage lights to be turned down, and said, "let's see if we can cast a spell." We sorta chuckled, right, a spell. Well, she cast a spell over two thousand people, immediately. I think with "The Magazine", "We belong together", and another, maybe "Coolsville." It was staggering. Leo Kotke, who opened, came out to play with her, and he was a mess, tears streaming down his face. Artist.

In 1983 January I began college at SMC. Bro. R was the music professor. In the evenings my a pal A. H. and I would walk up from the dorms...and stop at the grassy area between the boiler room and music building and listen. We listened to the sounds of a piano...sometime fitfully, sporadic and then just playing...playing and singing....your singing there...and now....here. So long ago....and so recent as now. I'm in a time wrap....or...so it seems. This riff on 'We belong"....is bringing me around...again. I'll never remember a time when this was not somewhere in my auditory memory. Bro. R. instructed several of us that you were going to be around the school....but we were not to disturb or bother you...as you were in need of a little contemplative space and time. I'm so glad you were able to fill the air then with your grand spirit....great soul soothing and loving self. Bro. R. was so generous and when I needed three additional credits, he suggested that he could develop a course in theory and music history...and so for an entire semester it was he and I for the courses to fulfill the credits I needed. This video was a great refresher of so many memories and I will all ways remember your offering such sweet sounds and feelings then....and now. Respectfully Ever SM (I'm on my wife's device)

Rickie Lee, You are the balm. You wear your heart on your sleeve and it is raw and healing. This live-stream is like a musical theater piece- hearing you tell the stories then playing the songs that go with them- it is like your life in music. (Your life IS music.) Beautiful.

I have always been so impressed by the way you hear harmony and melody outside the pop frameworks. It feels kin to Joni Mitchell's great compositions. (No, not comparing you to anyone, just acknowledging how unique each of your writing is.) Oh, yeah, and of course how hip and jazz inflected your grooves are. But what a privilege this is, for you to invite us into your home, sharing your personal stories and adventures and slings and arrows... Thanks, Ms. Jones.

it really is the BEST way to live to be able to "be" without any expectations in the mix, period. one of the main reasons i needed to drop my desire to "perform" is because i could no longer deal with ANY outside contingent. i mean, i could, but it wasnt worth it anymore... just being calls me stronger now.

At 37:10 " real end" . unless you are a musician who has performed shows or led groups, recorded, run sound/lights , even choir or church worship, you just don't get how difficult it really is to set up a song list, keep the energy, engage with the band and audience or extra singers/congregation, and the pressure to responsibly lead ,story tell, and incorporate instrument changes, key changes and unique tuning. all the while not being totally burned out by playing the same songs 1000's of times closely enough to original so everyone likes and understands, ...... while making it spontaneous. Once in a while things are spontaneous, but those are rare special times. This is the hallmark of good artistry, to make it seems so smooth and easy....
