Not sure blooper is the right word because most people watching Seinfeld would not know about earthquake plates and if even noticed might just think they are an architectural detail. Great video Rick! Seinfeld is one of my all time favorite shows.

A quick word on the brick masonry anchor plates- Those are commonly called earthquake plates in some areas but they are actually used for general wall stability and are seen in a lot of older brick structures across the country. I don't live in an earthquake prone region, but some of the older brick buildings in my area have those as well. I have not been to New York to look at brick structures there but I have heard they were used there also. I don't mean to critique, but wanted to throw that in as someone who spent several years in the construction field. Pointing those out is a nice observation though. Thank you for sharing what you found about this television exterior shot location.
@Zzyzx--2 күн бұрын
I was going to make the same comment but saw yours - I saw those plates on old brick buildings around Chicago and even on a Civil War-era 2-story brick farmhouse in Virginia. They're called masonry retrofit plates and are used exactly as you describe, to reinforce and stabilize old brick walls. AFAIK they've been used since at least the late 19th century and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. BTW Rick, this is no slam on your channel, I totally enjoy your videos! Please keep showing this great history around LA before it disappears.

I think none of us give any credit to location scouts. Its them that go around all over the world to look for the perfect place that directors look for. Blows my mind how rhey even considered the idea that NY style buildings exist in LA before they began looking.

Wow! Thanks for the reveal. Always thought Seinfeld did at least few exterior shots in NY. Never dreamed Jerry's apartment house was actually in LA. Off course, when Seinfeld actually did exterior filming with the characters walking on the street, it was always done in a motion picture lot in LA, not NY.
@ricknineg2 күн бұрын
It was filmed in LA to save money on the production. The characters were always in the studio for those scenes.

The street in front of the building is at a significant angle, which is common in LA, but everything in New York is completely flat. In the early Seinfeld episodes they show cars driving down the angle, however in the later episodes they tilt the camera to make the street look flat.

Anchor plates are NOT unique to CA. They've been used for hundreds of years to reinforce masonry wall and prevent them from bowing. Today you'll frequently see them in cities around the world that have brick and stone building dating from the 18th and 19th century, including NYC. Building codes in LA may make them more common, but seeing them is not a reliable cue that the building is in CA. Wikipedia has a good page for reference with pictures of anchor plates on buildings in a number of locations, including NYC

That's really neat Rick. I didn't realize the purpose of those little diamonds or squares on the buildings. It makes sense since the show was filed in LA to not fly all the way to NYC to just take pictures for a show. I always wondered about the building shots used on the show "Will and Grace". Those buildings were beautiful, and that show is also supposed to be set in NYC.
@vpking77Күн бұрын
What amazing about Seinfeld is how great the interior shots were. Not just of Tom's restaurant which was created on a sound stage but other locations. They did interiors of different restaurants and I don't know if they were actual locations they leased for the shoot or were recreations too. Fast forward to Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David used actual locations for everything. I don't think anything was shot on a sound stage. Even if they changed the name of the restaurant with signage it was all done on location. I was in NYC and took some photos of Tom's. They have the painting of Kramer that was used in the show hanging on the wall.

@mmnnra55Күн бұрын
To correct the record... The diamond, star, or other shape plates around masonry buildings at the floor level were part of the design of the buildings. You see them everywhere in every major city including New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia etc. They were used on Long rods layed in at the floor level during construction. The plates were attached at both ends tying the wood floors to the masonry walls. The plates and rods also kept the walls from bowing. Not particularly installed for earthquake protection but because of the design I'm sure they didn't hurt.. This type of construction went away in favor of the modern wall tie still used today.
@jasonsimpkins906917 сағат бұрын
Cool to see the building in person but any fan would know about the earthquake design. It's on the dvd. Now on 4k!!! And blu-ray.
@ellensiniscalchi1482Күн бұрын
You often see the exterior stabilizers in NYC buildings-mine has them. They're not particular to LA construction/ architecture. They're generally seen in buildings built in the teens and 20's.

We have those diamond things in Phila …it keeps the brick veneer wall from buckling out …I guess it would help in an earthquake..but I see those all day long in Philly
@aussie811421 сағат бұрын
Best not to go in, Jerry hates the pop in 😅 Those wall plates are also found in some non earthquake old buildings if the external walls are at risk of movement due to normal movement. Mostly old factory buildings where there are large open internal spaces.

The episodes where they were on the streets and actually hailing a cab after leaving the building were done in NY because they were driving around talking in the cab. So were any of those shot on a sound stage or lot I’m not sure of all the nomenclature? Anyway I love these outings plenty so thanks so much for doing them. 😊
@ricknineg19 сағат бұрын
Yes all interior shots done in a sound stage. The outer shots not in New York. They used rear projection and their own backlot at CBS Center Studios
@brianjaber317112 сағат бұрын
@ ok so it’s called rear projection and the cast must sit in a modified vehicle for filming.? So at some point they must film the rear projection screen films at some earlier point and file them away for later use.? It’s crazy how much goes into making a single scene let alone a full episode. I guess it’s why they call it movie magic. Thank you for taking the time to help me understand how this works. I’ll admit there is still much I don’t get but that’s why I watch your content which is also magic to me.

Your comment at 0:53 is inaccurate .... Seinfeld was actually video taped at CBS Television City and NOT at NBC Studios or any NBC property.
