There's a another episode in which this slot machine appears. The episode is 'It's a Nice Place to Visit', also from season 1 it was episode 28. and It aired in April of 1960. Larry Blyden stars as a robber is killed during a hold up and mistakenly thinks he's in Heaven. In the video he gets to enjoy all of his vices which includes gambling. During the episode he plays this same slot machine at least twice. His guide in heaven which actually turns out to be Hell, is Mr. Pip played by Sebastian Cabot of ''Family Affair' fame. It ends with the robber eventually gets bored with always winning and nothing ever going wrong and demands to be sent to the other place and Mr. Pip informs him that he's already there.

Back in the day, people were more inclined to reuse items instead of scrapping or selling things like we do today. It would be amazing to see how many shows and movies reused the same things, maybe a bit augmented for what it was needed for.

A careful examination of ALL "Twilight Zone" episodes will show that sets, props, and costumes were used many times in different episodes to save money (the show was often over budget anyway; Serling wanted maximum quality). Two cases in point: the underside and ramp of the flying saucer, and some space suits.

So I wonder if the slot machine was confiscated from a police station and the TZ crew used it in two separate episodes, were the episodes filmed back to back or was the same device confiscated twice? 🤔 Also wonder if Gary Marshall was inspired by this particular episode to come up with the name Happy Days? Or even the diner concept? 😮 Ok, I better stop, I’m getting into my own Twilight Zone now. 😂 Good video! Keep em coming!

I’m sure they use the same props for the amusement park scenes of “Perchance to dream“ and “In praise of PIP.” By the way, didn’t it seem odd the way they use the word PIP in the episode “In praise of Pip” and also Sebastian Cabot used it in “A nice place to visit” to summon him if Mr Valentine needed something.

Great information. Before reruns, VHS, or streaming…. It was one and done. The Hollywood studio system used the same houses, sets, and props all of the time. It was a business that was most concerned about entertainment and the profit from giving the public what it wanted to see. My favorite reuse was on Dragnet. They not only used the props many times but the same group of actors would play different characters in the same season. Just add glasses, change the clothes, wear a wig , and change from a good guys to a bad guy. It’s great to watch the same actor go from a crook to a cop in just a few weeks. What a country of opportunity.

At 2:30 there several other machines that look like slots. Were they real or just props?

I love the prices listed for various menu items on the walls. A hamburger steak for 65 cents, coffee and donut for 20 cents, etc. Plus a slot machine to get in some gambling? My kind of diner!

There’s a scene of Bogart in a diner in “The Big Sleep” with menu pricing on the wall… I don’t remember anything over $1. There’s also a scene in a first season Perry Mason episode that has Perry & Della in a fancy French restaurant where they are astonished over the astronomical price of a cup of coffee… $1! 😅

Buddy Epson did a great job in this one. At around the same time he also appeared on the Andy Griffith Show where he was a hobo that came to town on a train car and befriended Opie and became a bad influence on him. I didnt know they used the slot machine twice... I guess it worked well the first time, they used it again and I am sure the PD made some money with their required services... Nice job Rick...👍✌

3:56 - The WIlliams Manufacturing Company, which made many, many of the slot machines, was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, where slot machines were illegal. Note the big "W" on the back of the unit 4:13...

And consider that the "Jackpot", even the "Twin Jackpot" was like maybe $40 in quarters, which in current-day is probably worth around $1,000

The $10,000 jackpot in 'The Fever' is absurdly high even for a dollar bet, given the odds built into that old slot machine. The casino would have been losing a fortune. On top of it, the player would win the coins in the jackpot too.
